Could we use AI to update 4:3 media to 16:9?

I’ve been re-watching star trek voyager recently, and I’ve heard when filming, they didn’t clear the wide angle of filming equipment, so it’s not as simple as just going back to the original film. With the advancement of AI, is it only a matter of time until older programs like this are released with more updated...

MeatsOfRage ,

I’m not sure it’s really beyond the scope of AI. Stuff like stable diffusion in-painting / out-painting and some of the stuff Adobe was showing off at their recent keynote shows were already there.

MeatsOfRage ,

For context, the emachines “never obsolete” wasn’t referring to this computer, it was a recycling program where you could send your old machine back and get a huge discount on your next one. It was actually a pretty good deal at the time, especially when your average family machine was a lot more expensive than they are today

MeatsOfRage ,

They’re not trying to trick you they’re trying to rank up in Google. It’s basically SEO in real life. Every business with any online awareness is trying to juice their SEO. This isn’t the businesses fault, this is the world Google made for us.

MeatsOfRage ,

They’re AI generated, so check those communities.

MeatsOfRage ,

I mean it’s not even new. The last decade we mostly just called it machine learning and this type of work has been going on longer than that. It only feels new because we’re putting generative tools in people’s hands. It’s already proven itself, it’s already replacing jobs.

On a separate note (or possibly related), I just couldn’t get into this show. I love Stewart and watched daily show for years. I found the problem with… Problem was that it had a fear that the content wasn’t good enough to stand on it’s own so there was this constant barrage of quips that frequently fell flat. Maybe the show got better over time (I only caught the first 3 or 4 episodes).

MeatsOfRage ,

I think this all goes to show tone shifting is a difficult art and artists who choose to do it need to be able nail it or get ready to fall flat. I think Oliver is a master at tone shifting and it’s all done with taste and confidence.

MeatsOfRage ,

Now a days it’s:

  • Open ChatGPT
  • Paste code
  • "Can you just fix this for me?"
MeatsOfRage ,

You can get them for $399 here in Canada which converts to 276 euro. Seems reasonable they might be able to find one for 240 in their region.

MeatsOfRage ,

It’s probably coming in for a landing. I assume there’s an airport just past the river out of frame.

MeatsOfRage ,

Eh, I never bought this. The show has always been wildly uneven. The first season was very strong with two great episodes but the first episode is not great. The second season is pretty bad overall with the exception of Be Right Back. White Christmas was a good one off. The first Netflix season had some really strong showings with Nosedive, Shut Up And Dance and my personal favorite of the whole series San Junipero. I even thought season 4 was pretty decent overall. Also, banderanatch was actually pretty cool, especially if you really dug into all the paths.

The last 2 seasons, 5 & 6 were pretty bad overall with only one good episode each and some particularly bad ones. But honestly Charlie is probably just running out of ideas and I can’t really blame him at this point. I suspect he’s just trying different things. Sometimes big swings work and sometimes you just get Mazey Day.

MeatsOfRage ,

Yea, there’s over 700 episodes of a show that directly speaks about American culture. You’re gonna get some guesses right. Bet there’s as many misses as well but we don’t call them predictions until they’re true.

MeatsOfRage ,

Exactly. A lot of people in the thread seem to miss that point. Best Buy is a physical space with limited real estate. They carry things that people want to buy and taking things off their shelves is a clear indicator of something that isn’t selling anymore. Streaming is not going away. The quality of streaming is good enough for the vast majority of the public.

MeatsOfRage ,

I suspect pretty low given how they aren’t going to carry it anymore.

MeatsOfRage ,

I go there quite a bit for tech stuff. Here in Canada (I’ll assume it’s the same for the states) they’ll prices match any retailer online or off and you can walk out with your thing that day. They have a 12 month payment plan so big purchases are a lot more manageable.

MeatsOfRage ,

Yea Digg and Reddit aren’t really comparable for a number of reasons. Digg changed their entire website overnight into something that was fundamentally different to what it was. Reddit on the other hand looks and feels pretty much the same as it has for years. Anecdotally, most people I know in my life who use Reddit aren’t even aware of anything going on.

Additionally Reddit has something that Digg was never able to achieve, a huge presence over Google search results. Even if Reddit locked down completely today like some kind of read-only site it would still continue to get a ton of traffic for this reason alone.

MeatsOfRage ,

Love how it’s so bad it has it’s own setting

MeatsOfRage ,

Wow, when you watch the video is even more benign than this thread headline. It’s just plain dancing, nothing remotely scandalous.

MeatsOfRage ,

To be fair, when ie6 came out it was a really good browser. The concept of evergreen browsers wasn’t broadly a thing back in 2001. Windows XP was a huge success and there was no way to convince the world to move off of it and many companies built their intranets specifically around ie6. I think it was Korea that built all their banking off of Active X.

What’s worse is we haven’t replaced plastic straws with a good alternative. Paper straws fucking blow and I’m not going to carry around and wash a silicon straw with me at all times.

MeatsOfRage ,

Right?! They could’ve lead with that

MeatsOfRage ,

That’s the way hacks work. They look good on Tik Tok but then when you start to think about it you realize why we’re not already doing it that way.

MeatsOfRage ,

HD fuckin blows. It’s a cheap remake that screwed up the physics and was mostly lifeless. It was made by the studio that made all the terrible THPS games in the late 2000s through mid 2010s. It’s got a handful of levels from the first two games. It looks and feels like a mobile port.

Tony Hawk’s 1 + 2 is a love letter to the original 2 games. Loaded with content and they nailed the feel. Your muscle memory of the originals carries over perfectly. It’s got all the levels plus a few more. They also added in the revert from THPS3 which is sorely missing when you go back and actually play the originals.

MeatsOfRage ,

Right?! I’m pretty mixed on 4 but I’d argue 3 was every bit as good or better than the first two. The revert was an absolutely critical mechanic and there were some really fun levels like the neighborhood and the factory.

The New 8bitdo Retro Keyboard shipped early. Small-ish Male Hand for scale. (midwest.social)

I can try to answer any questions, but it doesn’t seem like the 8bitdo Ultimate software is availible for download yet. Im not big into mechanical keyboards, this is actually my first, so I don’t have much direct comparison experience to other keyboards....

MeatsOfRage ,

Yup, I love this so much but I’ll be cold and dead in the ground before I give up my numpad

MeatsOfRage ,

Nah, they’re just giant buttons you smash with your dukes

TIL In the Hot Coffee lawsuit against McDonalds, punitive damages were given due to McDonalds intentionally overheating coffee to save money on refills (www.poolelg.com)

During the trial it was revealed that McDonald’s knew that heating their coffee to this temperature would be dangerous, but they did it anyways because it would save them money. When you serve coffee that is too hot to drink, it will take much longer for a person to drink their coffee, which means that McDonald’s will not...

MeatsOfRage ,

Her lawsuit was just to help cover the medical expenses. McDonald’s didn’t want a precedence of being sued so their PR cooked up a narrative of greedy frivolous lawsuits and America bought this story hook line and sinker.

Y’all just need to get Terminal Pro for $16.99 a month for that sweet ad free experience

MeatsOfRage ,

For real. You want it for free? Cool go ahead and make the mod yourself. All the tools are there. Wait, you don’t want to spend your time learning to code? You don’t want to spend your time learning modding tools. Our time is our most finite resource and you get mad when someone asks for something in return for theirs? People are just up their own asses.

MeatsOfRage ,

Had to Google this one (Mark Webber 2010 crash for the curious).

Good lord, I can’t believe he survived that. Those machines are built to crash and walk away from.

MeatsOfRage ,

I think blockchain was the last big buzzword that everyone was dumping money into

has your YouTube consumption decreased after implementing the "no history, no recommendations" feature?

I noticed my consumption has decased quite a bit. I would visit regularly to watch content from few channels. I would probably still visit every so often to watch the new videos. But the experience has become more deliberate and conscious. I go to YouTube because I want to go and watch something specific. Mindlessly browsing and...

MeatsOfRage ,

Same. I usually find something in the first 4 results that are relevant and interesting. Only thing I wish it did more is expand a bit. It heavily favors stuff related to what you’ve watched very recently. There’s some channels I love but completely forget about because I haven’t played them in a little where.

MeatsOfRage ,

As close as he could without going over

MeatsOfRage ,

The quick conversation I use is take off 30 and half the rest to go F to C or double it and add 30 to go C to F.

20C doubled is 40 and add 30. 70F

80F take off 30 is 50. Half that is 25. 25C

It’s not completely accurate but close enough for conversation purposes.

Reminds me of how Jack White had a team of vinyl creatives come up with cool ways to hide music on the vinyl record youtube.com/watch?v=i-8B-_Jq2ro&feature=share…

Shout out to Elden Ring. It’s the only non-sequel, non-ip based game to chart since Destiny and Watch Dogs in 2014.

MeatsOfRage ,

Old comic but still one of my all time favorites

Reddit is gonna be just fine and the shade we like to throw around here isn’t even a blip on their radar
