Ending support for Windows 10 could send 240 million computers to the landfill. Why not install Linux on them? (gadgettendency.com)

With support ending for Windows 10, the most popular desktop operating system in the world currently, possibly 240 million pcs may be sent to the landfill. This is mostly due to Windows 11’s exorbitant requirements. This will most likely result in many pcs being immediately outdated, and prone to viruses. GNU/Linux may be...

State governments usually are required to place all of their computers up for sale through surplus. (Hard drives usually removed and destroyed). I have been through that process at a State College and a University. They aren’t just thrown away. I imagine there is a similar process for federal computer.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

A ball is around 200 here, 240 when scarce. So about 3.5 times less than what that guy was saying. 🤷‍♂️

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

So the act of convincing people through false pretense to be transfered across state lines under the reasoning that it costs to much sounds like deception for profits.

Why aren’t they asking for more financial aid (they do get financial aid for such) to find proper solutions? Instead they advertise barbed wire fences in rivers and the yearning to shoot them.

I still wonder how the fish and wildlife groups aren’t complaining more about the river.

The federal aid by the way, started by the Obama administration

Years ago (maybe 2009ish) my mother got rear ended 4-5 times by the same person at a red light. They hit her, and kept accidentally hitting the gas instead of the brake over and over. It probably happens more often than we think… but there will always be people lying to themselves and others that they are good drivers.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

I havent seen a lvl 3 yet, have you? Id like to know your actual thoughts on driving one. I only see Teslas and such, and they don’t have them yet.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

… the ticket would still exist. Are you thinking you would be able to send it to your car manufacturer so they can look into what happened?

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

That’s what they have always done. I vote they garnish the wages from everyone who had a say against helping those people. Starting with Clarence Thomas. Once he pays 275,000 to student loans of his own dime, maybe we csn start considering it.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

So Dreamweaver type software? Did that die?

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Or just write contracts that put the fall through on the smaller company that fails acquisition. (Seems more likely) Sucks, but many business acts do now

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

That was Macromedia as well if I am not mistaken.

Clarence Thomas’ Private Complaints About Money Sparked Fears He Would Resign (www.propublica.org)

After almost a decade on the court, Thomas had grown frustrated with his financial situation, according to friends. He had recently started raising his young grandnephew, and Thomas’ wife was soliciting advice on how to handle the new expenses. The month before, the justice had borrowed $267,000 from a friend to buy a high-end...

Maybe if the dumb fucks worked towards supporting the majority of the populous and not just the ones making more than 30 million a year and we’d have affordable living situations.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Yeah, why would it take 2 minutes for the pipes to clear between the hot water heater and the shower. Does he live in a 250x1 yard/meter house? Hot water heater on one side and shower on the other?

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

If there is a large following of Trump who is regurgitating Nazi rhetoric… it unfortunately makes sense to keep marketing at least here.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Well just apply his words, immigrants tainting blood… His position would be to fully support Isreal and wipe out any foreign blood that could come near their borders. Expand their borders for “sake of security” agaisnt said foreigners and then start over.

From what I understood it was the same plug. Just dispersing different current/voltage. Didn’t think it was 2 plugs. Someone with more knowledge may confirm

Sort of, the article states they are following the EU and China as well. Aiming to bring a universal port/plug that will work for business and consumers across all size platforms

Black Ohio woman criminally charged after miscarriage underscores the perils of pregnancy post-Roe (apnews.com)

The 33-year-old Watts, who had not shared the news of her pregnancy even with her family, made her first prenatal visit to a doctor’s office behind Mercy Health-St. Joseph’s Hospital in Warren, a working-class city about 60 miles (100 kilometers) southeast of Cleveland....

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Where are you from?

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Mind me asking about your experience(s)? I am not familiar with much of Sudan

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Where abouts do you reside now? What do you feel they overlook when Sudan is displayed visually or verbally discussed from the media.

Also for a pleasantry if someone said Poland was known for sausage, Germany for snitzel, U.S. for cheeseburgers, (all over generalized one off foods, not specific or defining) what would you say would be a food for Sudan?

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

The food sounds interesting. I’d love to go visit some time. As I’ve gotten older it seems I have lost that “someday I’ll go visit said place” spontaneity/hope for adventure. Born in 1989. I think it’s time I re-find that part of myself. If I make it there I’ll be sure to tell you a out the food. A nice falafel sounds good.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

That is the scientific definition as well is it not? Time didn’t exist before movement.

I’m still trying to figure out why Russia used to own Alaska. Hell of a trip across the world to have sold that portion to the U.S.

Being that he focused on Insulin being brought down to no more than $35 a month for medicaid, it is a high likelyhood that is one of the first drugs on the list.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

They stated disruptive. If no one elses rights are violated it is not disruptive. At minimum disruptive to me would have to include intentionally blocking roadways and holding up everyone else. (Which does violate the rights of people who live and work in the area). So your stance sounds as if to be opposite of the person you commented on.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

I viewed it as a “hill you would die on” type of question. Where everyone you talk to thinks you are an idiot or believes you to be wrong, but you refuse to change your mind.

Good examples usually are found in people who get stuck in conspiracies, but it doesn’t always have to be. “Birds aren’t real” “Earth Flat” are conspiracies.

Or it could be something off the wall like “Anyone not willing to commit suicide is a coward and inherently evil for putting themselves betore all other lifeforms on this planet”

(Not saying I do/don’t agree with any of these comments/things, just giving my opinion on what the question meant)

Ultrasound can push vaccines into the body without needles (www.newscientist.com)

Vaccines can be delivered through the skin using ultrasound. This method doesn’t damage the skin and eliminates the need for painful needles. To create a needle-free vaccine, Darcy Dunn-Lawless at the University of Oxford and his colleagues mixed vaccine molecules with tiny, cup-shaped proteins. They then applied liquid...

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

The needle or the ultrasound, seems like the prick might be less waste

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Am I overlooking where the outbreak was coming from? They say where they were sold but where were they grown?

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Thanks, it wasn’t clearly stated on the CDC website either, although they said the investigation was ongoing. I just figure a label with where it is from does me no good if I don’t know where/when to avoid.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Yeah, area wise Japan is about 60% the size of Texas. With Japan having more than twice the GDP. Seems pretty straight forward why infrastructure should be better there. Japan has 4x the populous as well. Makes a lot more motivation to focus on public transport.

Saw a article of a pickup the other day that was an electric driven vehicle with limited miles and a diesal powered generator that would charge the battery. Total range was 500 or so. Wish I could remember what it was, it sounds like evidence of what you were looking for.

Washing machines could be made to support glass/metal straws for better cleaning though, I think there just hasnt been enough adoption yet.

They are a pain in the ass to clean currently

LifeInMultipleChoice , (edited )

Triangle device that has a heater like an electric kettle. They lay along the long side standing up. Pump rolls/jets hot water over the top down through the straws. A few ridges on the back and a removable filter to rinse in the sink. Could be less than 50 for a stand alone device, a dish washer could build it into the front closing door, just needs the jets for water ran there. The heat would already exist in the dishwasher.

Edit: I do agree it wouldn’t be the perfect cleaner, but a dishwasher isn’t that. Also most straws are pretty similar in diameter. Strange straws would just not go on there, like how strange cups don’t fit in dishwashers.

I think the most common issue with metal straws we will find is people complaining the metal feels cold on their teeth. I never had that issue, but my partner has said it to me before, she uses those rubber tips for the end of the metal straw

As a gun owner, I can sell you a gun tomorrow and you will not have to pass a background check. Private gun sales happen all over.

I learned the wrong way to do it and like it. Boil the noodles, drain the water and then add the packet. Mix and enjoy. If the sodium isn’t killing me yet, add some hot sauce.

The way I viewed it, if they short you a $100 on your paycheck you will have to prove them the hours, bring it to HR and try to get it fixed on the next paycheck. They borrowed $100 for 2 weeks and wasted company time. If you borrowed $100 from the till for 2 weeks without asking you would just be fired. I doubt any real legal recourse would be brought in either case. They would mark down your register was off and terminate employment.

$100 isn’t worth anyones time (In regards to creating a legal case), but it might land you unemployed for a long time and ruin your life.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Haha agreed, the borrowed for both sides was more joking terminolgy than realism. As for signing hours, I haven’t had that since 2011/2012. Since then it has always been submit hours for approval and direct deposit. If the amount was off is where you’d have to bring it to HR for the companies I’ve been with.

My experiences with employment don’t reach the 80s though. Been working full time hours since 16, but I’m in my mid 30s.

I saw a discussion the other day that may have been part of it. They were pointing out that many users when first joining lemmy created accounts on multiple instances. Whether they needed to find a community they preferred or do to ddos attacks and other issues causing outages a lot of those accounts have likely become inactive more as time went by. So the numbers may not be decreasing so much as been inflated by individuals coming up as multiple active users early on. I haven’t looked into how they are verifying what users are active though, so it could be wrong. If someone knows more please respond.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

They had them in my elementary school back in the 90s. Haven’t seen one since then. They were pretty cool though. I’m sure some people would buy it if they brought it back for nostalgia.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Wouldn’t expect any strange looks so long as it is on the menu. The number of places that sell chocolate chip cookies, brownies, 9 laters of chocolate cake cake etc isn’t 0. I’m an alcoholic but I actually would look at someone who ordered a cocktail at a restaurant more strangely with how they get priced. If someone said you can get a giant brownie with ice cream chocolate fudge topped with peanuts and a glass of milk, or a martini and the martini will cost more… I’ll take the milk. Maybe I’m not doing the alcoholism thing right.

San Francisco homeless sweep was cheered on by the right. It was also illegal (www.vice.com)

iMessage automatically goes to read if it doesn’t work correctly. Partner got a new phone number when switching providers. She has a Samsung phone, and kept it. The number they gave her came from an iPhone. All messages sent to her from iPhones were marked read on their end and never get delivered. All messages sent to iPhones appear to send, but don’t arrive. All texts from Android to Android still worked fine so we didn’t realize immediately as I had an android phone as well.

The phone number that isn’t owned by Apple is being routed to them even though they should have no part in the process. Apple’s advised solution is to acquire an iPhone to disable iMessages. Thankfully they have a website where you can remove a number from their service, but it is not intuitive to go to AT&T/Verizon/Spectrum/whoever and purchase a cellular plan and then have to reach out to a 3rd party company to shut down their invasive services on products they down own.

“I’ve noticed it has become easier to see liers as I’ve gotten older and mentally ill people.”

Sometimes I wonder if we are all mentally ill. Some might say those thoughts stem from depression or such but it makes more sense to me that sanity is a spectrum where 0 and 10 are near unreachable. We make decisions that won’t help ourself, but we excuse it because we think it will make us happy at the time. Chasing happiness ultimately seems like an act outside of sanity.

The Kobyashi Maru teaches a false lesson though. Complacency. While learning to be humble has value, learning to accept the current status quo as permanent is not acceptable either unless you believe it to be perfect. Haha. That was what Kirk reminded them of I believe, I’m rusty though

Edit: also. Thanks for the kind words. Easy to forget to say thank you sometimes.

Depends on how many lives are cut short and never become. If one woman were to have had 6 kids who then made another 12 grandchildren, their footprint would be much higher than if a woman never was going to have kids.

Overall it is a dark topic. But ~7 lives to a fighter jet tank of gas if I saw correctly. (28 metric tons per tank) average footprint worldwide is about 4 per person.

The moral of the story I suppose is to send everyone to war on foot, nude, and only hand to hand combat is permitted. Don’t want to figure out the footprint of a sword or hammer. Easier just to say pick up a rock.

Now that that’s sorted, let’s have some tea.
