Takeaways on fine water, a growing trend for the privileged in a world that's increasingly thirsty (apnews.com)

Millions of people worldwide don’t have clean water to drink, even though the United Nations deemed water a basic human right more than a decade ago. Yet, even as extreme heat dries up more aquifers and wells and leaves more people thirsty, luxury water has become fashionable among the world’s privileged, who uncap and taste...

Maryland's handgun licensing law has been struck down by a federal appeals court (apnews.com)

A federal appeals court on Tuesday struck down Maryland’s handgun licensing law, finding that its requirements, which include submitting fingerprints for a background check and taking a four-hour firearms safety course, are unconstitutionally restrictive....

I think they were referring to greed, not capitalism specifically. I think there’s a much stronger argument that greed is a part of human nature. Capitalism is just our latest attempt to harness it.

I saw this and figured, “I’ll show this bastard what evil Finland has done,” and I found some pretty appalling things…apparently, they don’t like small talk and can be emotionally reserved…and…and…its quite cold.

Monsters.

You know, people are saying it. Very smart people. If we could just rake our forests, we wouldn’t have the fires. They’re nice fires, though, very big. Some say the biggest. But if we’d rake, the fires wouldn’t happen. Crooked Hillary and Sleepy Joe, they don’t want to talk about the raking. I even asked some very smart people if we could turn off the sun to stop the fires, but I think the “global warming” elitists are worried about their solar. So we have the fires.

I prefer the bicep debate… Did that get photoshopped, or did he do that thing where you twist your arm meat a little before resting it on the edge of the seat so the skin from the back of your arm makes a fleshy bicep shape as long as you dont move?

Jimmyeatsausage ,

I’ll ask again… maybe you’ll answer (nobody else I’ve asked has). It seems you support Israel, so why don’t you think they should be held to a higher standard than a literal terrorist organization?

Jimmyeatsausage ,

Hamas doesn’t care… They are terrorists. It is incumbent upon the “good guys” to be better than the terrorists. We really don’t want to go back to the time when war was a race to the bottom of the atrocity ladder.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

I’ve been in a few war zones… I know the rules. The point isn’t whether it’s legal… Israel has the resources to clear these places on foot. Yes, it sucks and yes, it will result in higher IDF casualties. Just like clearing Falluja building by building led to higher coalition losses there. Soldiers dying is better than civilians dying…especially when you’re fighting terrorists. Every dead civilian has family, friends, lovers, etc, that will become more sympathetic to the terrorists and make killing the ideology that much harder.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

So you’re just being a contrarian/troll then? Seemed like a pretty emotional defense of their actions for someone who doesn’t support them. Guess that’s the internet for you.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

“When were you radicalized?”

“When Columbia was leading the charge on human rights…”

Jimmyeatsausage ,

I feel like framing the issue like this kinda dangerous. If a single entity (in this case, a business) is allowed to discriminate against a protected class, then are all businesses that provide that service allowed to discriminate against said class?

It seems as though they would be. That gets us back to a version of the Jim Crow South pretty quickly. How are LGBTQ+ folks supposed to exist as equal members in a society if entire segments of that society are legally allowed to close themselves off? What happens when a business that controls major segments of more important service sectors makes a similar decision (for example, say the only Level 1 trauma center in a city is in a privately-owned, religiously-affiliated medical center that now has a legal precedent to say they won’t serve LGBTQ+ patients for religious reasons)?

Jimmyeatsausage ,

I guess you’ve got a good point…its hard to imagine it could ever get that bad.

I’d say the diagram of “Why is sex work illegal” and “Why is abortion illegal” is almost a perfect circle.

It’s about contolling other peoples’ bodies and weakening the separation of church and state.

I wouldn’t take drug-mixing advice from some rando on reddit or lemmy or any other similar site.

That being said, please limit yourself to one substance at a time, get some fentanyl test strips and narcan if you’re able, and always have a wingman with you. Assuming it’s possible where you live, buy your drugs from a regulated dispensary or at least a source you know and trust (whose source they trust).

Have fun, but stay safe. The times they are a changing…even weed has dangerous shit mixed in nowadays.

That’s my drug advice from a rando on a lemmy.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

You can totally ask a good doctor that. They’ll likely say something along the lines of “don’t do drugs…but if you’re still gonna do this…”

Jimmyeatsausage ,

Better late than never, I fucking guess…

Jimmyeatsausage ,

Personally, I think if someone broke into my house, it would be dark…I’d have probably just been woken from a dead sleep. There will be dogs barking…possibly kids also just woken from a dead sleep who are now scared and either calling for me or running towards me. There’s no way I can put myself between my family and the bad guys in that situation. If I just start shooting, I’m liable to be shooting in the general direction of a pet or child. Even in the very best scenario, where somehow my kids, my pets, my wife, and my MIL who lives with us all happen to be in my bedroom in the middle of the night I’m still very likely to just shout that we’re armed and the police are on the way. Whether they steal a TV or I shoot a TV still results in me needing a new TV…but I also know that statistically, even me having a gun in my home escalates an already tense situation where I’ll be groggy but hopped up on adrenaline and not be a reliable shot. Even if it played out how folks like to imagine… one shot, one kill, I’ve still taken a life in front of my family. That’ll result in years of therapy for all of us. I’d rather just get a new TV or whatever. We’re more likely to get struck by lightning as a family than have a Richard Ramirez type who broke into the house just to kill us, and it’s more likely still that I’ll get depressed and use the gun on myself than it is that I’ll successfully defend my family with it.

I say all that as someone with military firearms training, family members in the local PD, and as someone who’s been woken up in the middle of the night by an emergency (in that case, our house was on fire).

GAZA: 3,195 children killed in three weeks surpasses annual number of children killed in conflict zones since 2019 (www.savethechildren.net)

Since October 7, more than 3,257 children have been reported killed, including at least 3,195 in Gaza, 33 in the West Bank, and 29 in Israel, according to the Ministries of Health in Gaza and Israel respectively. The number of children reported killed in just three weeks in Gaza is more than the number killed in armed conflict...

Shareholders won’t be happy about wasting all those profits on bullets…should have just stopped feeding them.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

It sure sounds like you’re holding Israel and a terrorist organization to the same standard. Nobody expects terrorist organizations to be concerned about human rights. Most of us still expect democratic states to… even if they don’t always live up to it.

I continue to be amazed that Israel’s “supporters” hold them in such low esteem…“Why should they be better than terrorists?” Because, if If we can’t expect Israel’s government to be better than Hamas, then what reason do we have to support them?

Jimmyeatsausage ,

That’s hardly fair to people with actual bi-polar disorder.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

“I’m sorry that you…[took it that way, misunderstood, etc]” basically saying “this is your fault, but I’ll apologize anyway”

Will the world ever stop being anti-intellectual?

One of the most aggravating things to me in this world has to be the absolutely rampant anti-intellectualism that dominates so many conversations and debates, and its influence just seems to be expanding. Do you think there will ever actually be a time when this ends? I'd hope so once people become more educated and cultural...

And if there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that such a superhuman intelligence will be used for the good of humanity and not to serve targeted ads, manupulate people against one another, and further enrich the wealthiest among us.

Jimmyeatsausage ,

LLMs are not self-aware. They are language prediction models. They say things real people might say because they were fed millions of permutations of real people saying things, so they’re very good at mimicing that. The issue with them not staying on the rails isn’t because they are developing a consciousness, its because trained models are extremely complex and difficult to debug…that’s why you need to be careful with the training data you use. So when a company scrapes its training data off the internet, you end up with LLMs that will say the same stupid shit as you find on the internet now (racism for one…or appeals to empathy like you mentioned)

You don’t acquire that much wealth with a whole lot of “fuck you, got mine”

Jimmyeatsausage ,

This kind of context?

$1 in 1938 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $21.77 today, an increase of $20.77 over 85 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 3.69% per year between 1938 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 2,077.49%.

Minimum wage workers today have less purchasing power than they did in the Great Depression

Jimmyeatsausage ,

I think some of you are conflating inflation and price increases. Inflation is the decrease in the value of money. Price increases are increases in the cost of commodities. I know that sounds a little pedantic, but while inflation can cause price increases, so can other things (things like taxes or monopolies). If the cost of living were locked to inflation, then yes, you’d see a 33% increase in the value of minimum wage. As an example, a 2 bedroom house was around $3900 in 1938. If you made minimum wage, then a house costs about 4 years’ worth of labor. It’s harder to get stats like that today because it varies so much by region… but I live in a pretty low cost-of-living state, and the median cost of a 2 bedroom house here is around $240k. Minimum wage today will earn you about $15k annually, meaning a house now costs 16 years’ worth of labor.
