Alex Jones’ personal assets to be sold to help pay Sandy Hook debt as judge decides Infowars’ fate (apnews.com)

A federal judge on Friday ordered the liquidation of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones ′ personal assets and was still deciding on his company’s separate bankruptcy case. The decision could determine the future of his Infowars media platform, as Jones owes $1.5 billion for his false claims that the Sandy Hook Elementary School...

IzzyScissor ,

This is an image of Mark Barden, not Alex Jones, BTW. His son was killed during Sandy Hook.

IzzyScissor ,

Apparently the way Lemmy’s link creation works makes all first-level replies to your comment the same link AS your comment. So, in providing the link ‘to be helpful’, you only linked to your own comment. That’s not actually helpful and so it doesn’t come across in the best way.

IzzyScissor ,

Oof. Nevermind, then. Tried to show you why being an asshole about it might have backfired, but keep being jaded!

IzzyScissor ,

He can go kick rocks. I’m trying to help you.

From an outsider perspective, it looks like you told him to “go respond to this guy instead”, but linked the same comment that it was already responding to. It was confusing and made you look like the asshole in the situation, which I’m trying to help prevent in the future.

IzzyScissor ,

I’d imagine they include their off-hours in the ‘averages’.

“So crazy that we’re getting more calls when we’re open than when we’re closed!”

IzzyScissor ,

Your back must hurt from moving all those goalposts.

IzzyScissor ,

Why? You ignore content anyway.

IzzyScissor ,

The goalposts to being a nazi got moved farther back because “we can’t know their intent from just this license plate” and then 2 seconds later, the goalposts for being a nazi was moved way forward because “everyone who says good luck in Chinese is a Nazi.”

Yes, that’s literally moving the goalposts on what defines a Nazi.

IzzyScissor ,

I think you should be cautious of just how much faith you’re putting into this person.

They said they’d agree

They didn’t. They only gave reasons to not agree. They implied that they would agree if that condition was met, but that’s not what they said.

they accepted that the person who owns the car is a Nazi

Again, they didn’t. They said, “I missed that,.my bad.” They didn’t change anything about their argument from this information (that was always available to them), just acknowledged that they didn’t use it.

Maybe I should’ve called their argument a strawman argument instead, but the discrepancy between what they say OP can call a Nazi and what they can call a Nazi feels wide enough to change the rules of the debate for each side.

IzzyScissor ,

You admit that they were running interference for a nazi, but also want to give them the benefit of the doubt? Historians have a word for people who didn’t agree fully with, but still defended nazis. Want to know what they were called?

Nazis.

If you’re aligning yourself with them, running interference for them, I’m going to treat you as if it is intentional because the effect is the exact same. If it was an accident, there were plenty of opportunities to change opinions and apologize. That hasn’t happened, so all evidence we have points to the person defending Nazis being disingenuous here.

You have to make assumptions on people’s motivations either way. I’m just more willing to base my assumptions on how genuine someone is being whether or not they are running interference for Nazis.

IzzyScissor ,

You misunderstand my point. Let me explain again.

I don’t care if they’re being genuine or not and don’t feel a need to prove it one way or the other. I will treat anyone who is defending Nazis as if they are genuinely Nazis themselves because at the end of the day, that’s what they’re pushing for, intentionally or not.

The damage this can cause does not change if it was intentional or not, so our reaction to it should not change either.

Their initial comment was complete nonsense, and sarcastic derision is one of the few things that actually upsets people like that who ignore the content of the conversation while also pretending to have the moral high ground. Their point is often to get people arguing amongst themselves instead of realizing they just shifted the conversation from “Here is a Nazi in Indiana” to “You can’t prove that Chinese speakers aren’t Nazis.” (Like we’re doing now.)

What would you have called them out for that fits better than moving goalposts or a strawman argument?

Even if god exists religion can't possibly be the way to god

So I thought about this in the shower amd it makes sense to me, like praying and stuff never worked for most people I know, so a direkt link to god gotta be unlikely. That made me conclude that religion is probably fake, no matter if there’s a god or not. Also people speaking to the same god being given a different set of...

IzzyScissor ,

People agreed with this so much that at the time, they murdered him for it.

IzzyScissor ,

No, Pilate literally washed his hands of the matter and was only talked into it by the crowd. He said he could find no wrongdoing and only ordered the crucifixion to be done with the matter.

IzzyScissor ,

You argued both sides of “jesus is god” and came to the same conclusion. You realize that’s an argument against God, right? If the story works without him being “divine”, there’s no reason to assume he was.

Also, like I mentioned in the other comment, Pontius Pilate washed his hands of the situation and only ordered the crucifixion because the crowd demanded it. You can question “how could they think that”, and argue that it’s “really quite a narrow range of people”, but the story is still that there were enough of them to demand the crucifixion of Jesus, and succeeded soo… What’s your argument here?

IzzyScissor ,

Oh no, I believe in a deity, I just believe the Flying Spaghetti Monster is the all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving being that created the universe. Have you heard the goodness of his noodliness? Forever and ever, r-amen.

Because if you can see how ridiculous that argument is, you can see how ridiculous I think yours is too. English is my first language and I grew up in the church. That’s why I don’t care about your ‘arguments’. I’ve heard them before. I’ve used them before. Then I grew up and learned better.

You’re correct that you cannot prove a negative, which is why the burden of proof is on someone making a claim. You claim there is a god, but cannot prove the existence of him, so I have no burden to believe you just like you have no burden to believe me when I claim there’s an all-powerful coalescent ball of spaghetti that controls the universe. “Just assume it’s true and then marvel at how cool and strange things would be” isn’t actually a persuasive argument.

Jesus was a cool guy, but lots of people are killed for standing up for what they believe in. We don’t make religions out of them, though.–

IzzyScissor ,

“Give me your entire life and I’ll give you rewards beyond your wildest dreams… that you can only see after you die.”

One of the greatest grifts in all of history.

IzzyScissor ,

I feel bad that my old job’s IT department would never trust me when I listed this amount of detail, so I stopped putting in the extra effort.

My ticket: I am not able to login using the standard portal. The error I recieve is X. I have already tried rebooting. I have confirmed that everything was fully plugged in and that I am on the correct network. I also already went through the normal recovery process which did not work. Here is the result, [X].

The first response from IT: Why don’t you try rebooting and then let me know if it’s working. If not, go through the normal recovery process.

Like, I get it, you’re being thorough and don’t want to just blindly trust the user, but I’m only talking to you because I already tried your quick fixes. Please understand.

IzzyScissor ,

Yeah, I get that. I think it’s partially to do with how rarely I’ll have an actual issue. Also with their turnover rate, I rarely interact with the same tech twice.

I still do all the legwork to figure out if it’s something I can fix myself and always put specifics (Repro steps, Error Codes, etc.), but pulled back on listing every other step I’ve already tried.

IzzyScissor ,

They’ve convinced themselves their (absolutely wrong) choice is the ‘morally correct’ one. Even LISTENING to a contradictory argument is seen as a moral ‘corruption’, so they just … don’t.

IzzyScissor ,

Christians: Give your money to the poor and love your neighbor as yourself.

Also Christians: Those lazy illegals are taking our jobs! We shouldn’t be taking people’s hard-earned money and just GIVING it to people who have PROVEN they can’t manage it! What about MY bootstraps!

IzzyScissor ,

Who is “grooming” the next generation again?

IzzyScissor ,

I’ve been playing couch co-op with my husband on both of our Switches. It’s not too bad if you don’t force a turn timer. The game will give you a ding when you’re the last one to play, but we both have ‘side games’ or play with our cats in the meantime if the other needs more time. I wouldn’t do it online or with a turn timer, though.

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It’s a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

IzzyScissor ,

the vast majority don’t care or they would have stopped using it a long time ago

It’s a little disingenuous to claim people should’ve stopped using something that hasn’t come to market yet. I was looking for other options when they started trying to force me to upgrade to Windows 11, but this absolutely is the last straw that I won’t use Windows on my next computer.

IzzyScissor ,

You said there was no evidence that anyone would change. I told you my personal story how this IS impacting me and how I’m going to change OS on my next computer, and you… just sarcastically dismissed me?

Did you want to actually contribute to the conversation or just be upset?

IzzyScissor ,

And I’m sure this in no way will invade people’s privacy.

“Hmm, why is the anti-queer politician sitting next to me being served dozens of male underwear ads? Hmmmm…”

“Why is my daughter receiving ads for newborn diapers? Hmmm…”

“Why is my neighbor receiving ads for anger management? Hmmm…”

Because they’re a notoriously bad design that is prone to failing on every front that Tesla claimed they were the ‘cutting edge’ on. They’re just BAD. The only way Tesla is going to sell out of their production line is by forcing someone to buy them, and it looks like it’s the US military.

I wouldn’t think the same thing for Ford F150s, but I DEFINITELY would if suddenly we started hearing about police suddenly buying Fisher Price cars after hearing story after story of how they break down and leave toddlers stranded.

Workers at TJ Maxx and Marshalls are wearing police-like body cameras. Here’s how it’s going (www.cnn.com)

Retail chains like TJX, the parent company of TJ Maxx and Marshalls, are equipping some store employees with body cameras to deter shoplifting and improve safety. This is part of a growing trend in the retail industry, as stores respond to an increase in organized retail theft and violence against workers. However, some...

IzzyScissor ,

I’d imagine the biggest difference is that these employees could actually get fired if they turn theirs off.

IzzyScissor ,

Celsius is how hot water feels. Fahrenheit is how hot humans feel.

One is clearly more applicable for day-to-day life.

IzzyScissor ,

Well, mostly. You still need to use Kelvin so you don’t get negative numbers for sciencing, but using them simultaneously for both day-to-day and science is nowhere near as common. Most people just want to know what to wear, and using Celsius loses a lot of the fidelity that Fahrenheit gives. This is after I spent 2 years only looking up the weather in Celsius so that I could get a feel for each degree of difference, and ended up just getting frustrated at how the same degree temperature in Celsius could feel drastically different to me when it’s actually a 2-3 degree difference in Fahrenheit.

Also, FWIW, British people love to use Fahrenheit when it’s over 100 degrees because it ‘feels hotter’ to say that than ‘37’, but they also love using Celsius when it’s below freezing, as it ‘feels colder’ to say negative numbers instead of numbers in their teens or twenties. It’s more psychology than anything, but Fahrenheit still definitely has its practical uses, and I’m not ditching it anytime soon.

We can ditch feet/yards/miles though. Meters definitely make more sense in that regard.

IzzyScissor ,

10-15 Celsius literally isn’t “freezing” though?

IzzyScissor ,

Please no. I didn’t upgrade to Windows 11 on purpose. I’m just trying to hold out as long as I can until I’m forced to switch to Linux. I don’t want to have to deal with more enshittification in the meantime.

IzzyScissor ,

Just don’t call anyone ‘cis’. That’s a crime punishable by ~~death ~~ account deletion.

IzzyScissor ,

I’m still sad that we didn’t use ‘Ultra’, which means ‘beyond’ or ‘on the far side of’. Huge missed opportunity to be called Ultragender instead.

Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, again (www.engadget.com)

Spotify is officially raising its Premium subscription rates in the US come July, following reports of the move in April. The platform is increasing its Individual plan from $11 to $12 monthly and its Duo plan from $15 to $17 monthly — the same jump as last year’s $1 and $2 price hikes, respectively. However, its Family plan...

IzzyScissor ,

Prices will continue to go up until the number of subscribers lost due to the price increase outweighs the additional profit from the subscribers who agree to pay the higher amount.

Capitalism machine goes brrrrrrr

IzzyScissor ,

ahem The deity he follows says that he should turn the other cheek and not only allow it to happen again, but to happily and freely provide the opportunity. You can still call him hypocritical.

You can create a partition on your hard drive and set your PC up to dual-boot. I have no idea if this is still widely used or if there is another, better/easier way, but it’s what I did a long time ago for a hat simulator game.

Or the technology for invisibility arrives before time travel so they were there, just undetected. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

He was surprisingly good at creating devastating nicknames for people that would cut them down to a single flaw. A lot of his path wasn’t to be the best candidate, but to ruin everyone else’s reputations.

But now when he’s falling asleep in his criminal trial on almost a daily basis, it’s hard for quips like “Sleepy Joe” to have the same effect. Or when he’s asking for Biden to be drug tested before the debate when he’s the one with the White House that was referred to as being “awash in speed”. It’s always been projection, but he isn’t able to distract everyone fast enough anymore.

IzzyScissor ,

This was the same reaction I had when the Covid vaccines were rolling out. “They haven’t been proven to be 100% safe and effective!” OK. Sure, but you know what is guaranteed to be bad for you? Covid. There are two choices here, and there’s a clear mitigation of harm with one option over the other.

It’s shocking that we’d rather see children die of treatable vitamin deficiencies than the off-chance that the food ‘might be unsafe’.

IzzyScissor ,

I agree that those studies should be done. Studies should ALSO be done on people with unvaccinated covid infections, but we can’t do that on a large number of people, because they’re dead. The vaccinated people might have a ‘non-zero risk for blood clots’, but they’re still alive in the meantime.

IzzyScissor ,

So, in the screenshot where it says it was “submitted by [deleted]”: I can’t be 100%, but I’m pretty sure that’s what it looks like when the post was deleted entirely. It wasn’t a ‘blank’ post. It was a rant against GIMP in the GIMP subreddit as someone else posted here.

IzzyScissor ,

To the point where I legitimately thought it was a mockery of the series. Oof.

IzzyScissor ,

We’re not talking about any project though. In your case, it’d only be like an unaffiliated project specifically trying to imitate a project David Attenborough has worked on in an attempt to mislead people to think it could be David Attenborough. There’s always room for parody, but you couldn’t sell your voice as the ‘Planet Earth’ voice.

IzzyScissor ,

they didn’t claim this was Scarlett

The CEO tweeted ‘her’ on the day ‘Sky’ released. If it were a movie, the bad guys would be too dumb to be believable.
