Ilandar ,

I mainly listen to Japanese doujin music. It’s naturally good for discovery because many artists group together to form circles (independent labels) and release compilation albuns. I listen to the various annual compilation series I like, and every now and then there will be a new artist featuring on them so I’ll look up that artist and discover circles they feature on regularly. And when I discover a new circle, I naturally discover new compilation series and new artists.

The primary piracy resource for doujin music is Doujinstyle. One of the unique things about the doujin scene is that the pirates and the artists generally have a fairly good relationship. Most circles let Doujinstyle share their music because they understand it benefits them, and the minority who don’t submit requests to Doujinstyle who will always comply out of respect. As an alternative, these circles allow their music to be shared in the Doujinstyle Discord channels. Some of the artists even hang out in the Discord with the pirates. It’s a really interesting community that has formed over decades but never lost its tightknit feel.

Ilandar ,

It wasn’t a change to political process. It was to be another advisory body, of which we have many over several decades.

Ilandar ,

It’s not much more nuanced than that. Have you heard of Australia’s history wars? Many of the leaders and major ministers of Australia’s conservative party have been, and still are, subscribers to a completely alternate and incorrect version of Australia’s history which has been pushed for decades by right wing media and political journals like Quadrant. The current party leader, Peter Dutton, literally walked out during the federal government apology for the damage it caused to the Stolen Generations.

Decades of this shit has really slowed progress on Indigenous affairs and reconciliation, and it’s a big part of the reason why so many Australians have a warped idea of their own country’s history (if they even know anything) and why our attitudes towards our Indigenous peoples seem so laughably archaic to the rest of the world.

Ilandar ,

I don’t understand why the media is so desperate to frame the result around cost of living. It was clearly about education.

Ilandar ,

I’m not disagreeing with you, but the point to understand here is that Australia cannot even make it over the very first hurdle. Indigenous peoples are recognised in Canada’s constitution, the Canadian government has signed many treaties over hundreds of years and Canada even has a form of Indigenous self-governance in Nunavut. Australia cannot get anywhere even close to these things. Constitutional recognition was just rejected, widespread treaty making is only in its infancy and self-governance is an absolute pipe dream.

Other former colonies may be shitty towards their Indigenous peoples, but at the very least there is generally some form of recognition of their importance as Indigenous. In Australia, we do not even see Indigenous peoples as Indigenous. We don’t understand what that word actually means. So much of the commentary from No voters during this referendum was about how Indigenous Australians are just another racial minority group, equating them with Chinese Australians, Indian Australians, etc. People fundamentally do not understand the difference, because they do not understand the history of their own country.

Ilandar ,

What are the extra rights and representation needed?

Because they are Indigenous. Do you understand the difference between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in a colonial state?

Ilandar ,

It won’t change until Australians learn about, and accept, the real history of their country. Many No voters fundamentally do not understand the simple point you are making about colonisation and sovereignty. To them, Indigenous Australians are just another minority group. People do not understand why they are inherently different and special when we are talking about these issues.

Ilandar ,

(but then why is Tixati in B, seems to have mostly downsides?)

You need to read it again more carefully. Lightweight, highly customisable and feature-rich is why it is that high.

How the fuck can I kill 20 hours?

My 13 hour flight just got delayed 7 hours, I’m stuck at my second airport, and I dont think I’m gonna make it. I have some movies and audio books on my phone, but really only anticipated having to burn the flight time via napping and some media, not 7 hours leading up to it, and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna mentally burn...

Ilandar ,

Don’t kill your time. When you’re in the final moments of your life you’ll most likely wish you had more, so make the effort to be thankful for every second you have now.

Ilandar ,

RUNE cracked Baldur’s Gate 3 recently.

Ilandar ,

It will be deGoogled soon enough. The Fairphone 4 is supported across several deGoogled versions of Android including CalyxOS, iodéOS, LineageOS, DivestOS and /e/OS. The Fairphone 3 and even the 2 are also supported by some of those operating systems.

Ilandar ,

The CPU choice is great, why are you disappointed with it? It’s the reason they can offer a minimum of 8 years of support on this model.

Ilandar ,

They are offering a minimum of 8 years of software support. 5 years is the warranty. I’m not sure why OP wrote that, it’s not what was announced.

Ilandar ,

Were you actually expecting that? No manufacturer has ever created an upgradeable smartphone, let alone one as small as Fairphone. The Phonebloks concept died ages ago.

The situation with the camera on the Fairphone 3 was unique and mainly in response to problems with the original module. It shouldn’t be taken as evidence that they have the ability to do this with every edition of the Fairphone, or extend upgrades to other areas like the display.

Ilandar ,

Unfortunately I think a lot of people just have zero understanding of how the smartphone industry works. They think small manufacturers like Fairphone just have free reign to get whatever parts they want, offer updates for however long they want, etc.

The reality is that Fairphone have to find a way to work within the system that has been created by big tech. That means selecting parts based on their suitability for the long-term support goals they have. It’s one of the reasons why the specs are mid-range, because these parts stay in circulation for longer. For example, the 4 had a very generic 60 Hz IPS notch display because it was a widely used panel within the industry at the time. Now that higher refresh rate OLEDs have become more common on mid-range devices, Fairphone has been able to put one into the 5.

Ilandar ,

It has support for up to 2 TB of removable storage. Did you even bother to read the specifications…?

Ilandar ,

CalyxOS is the most advanced of those I mentioned. They have a monthly update schedule and a larger team. My favourite is iodéOS, though, because of the iodé ad and tracker blocker app which can be used simultaneously with a VPN.

Ilandar ,

I can understand that. The next best option is a second-hand phone, which will also help with your financial problem. However keep in mind that Fairphone are offering a minimum of support for 8 years (and aiming for 10) so it may work out as less overall depending on what you normally spend on a phone.

Ilandar ,

Even if it lasts let’s say 6 years, I can buy 3-4 mid range androids at this price

Something tells me you missed the point of the Fairphone…

Ilandar ,

The cameras aren’t even bad, they are perfectly acceptable for a mid-range phone. If you use a GCam port they can look great.

Ilandar ,

Easily removed, though. The great thing about Fairphones is, like Pixels, they have loads of deGoogled OS support.

Ilandar ,

Well…aside from the fair supply chain, liveable wages, humane working conditions, environment footprint…

Ilandar ,

No, I mean it runs system wide and can block ads and trackers from any application. There are definitely no ads in the OS lol

Normally these ad and tracker blocking apps are detected as a VPN by Android, which means you cannot use a real VPN at the same time. iode’s blocker is unique in this area.

Ilandar ,

Sorry, I misunderstood what OP was trying to say. I didn’t realise they were talking about feature updates when they mentioned the 5 years. A security patch is still an update to the operating system and evidence of support, so my initial reaction was that they were wrong when they said “5 years of OS support”.

Ilandar ,

That’s the focus of Framework’s business. Fairphone is a lot more focused on improving working conditions, pay rates, reducing environmental footprint, etc. The modular design is really more of a side-effect of that last bit rather than the reason the company exists.

Ilandar ,

Not always accurate. Depends on the institution (my credit union’s app has worked flawlessly for years).

Ilandar ,

Download the Good Lock app. Lots of interesting stuff to play with in there.

Ilandar , (edited )

The PayPal app definitely works with microG. I can’t confirm whether it works with a completely deGoogled version of Android, but it has been reported as working by multiple users through Techlore’s Plexus project.

EDIT: Just checked PayPal on a completely deGoogled device and it works.

Ilandar ,

What kind of phone do you have? If you are interested in privacy and haven’t used one of these alternative Android-based operating systems a try yet, I definitely recommend it if you have a compatible device. You lose very little in terms of app support and functionality while making significant gains in privacy, speed and battery life.

Ilandar ,

The 4a could stop receiving updates any day now because it’s minimum support lifecycle is due to end this month. GrapheneOS will only offer updates for phones still supported by Google, which means you could be on outdated security patches very quickly.

If you want to use GrapheneOS, a better choice (if you can afford it) would be to stretch to the 6a, because that was from the generation when Google started guaranteeing a minimum of 5 years of support. This means that the end of its minimum support lifecycle is 4 years from now so it will be secure for a lot longer.

Here is the GrapheneOS support chart for reference.

Alternatively, you could go with an alternative privacy based operating system like CalyxOS, iodéOS or even LineageOS as they all offer longer term support for the 4a and other older devices. You won’t get the additional firmware updates when manufacturer support runs out, but you will at least have recent Android security patches. There’s also DivestOS, but I haven’t used that myself so I can’t recommend it with the same confidence as the other three.

Ilandar , (edited )

Do you really want to use GrapheneOS? If you don’t mind using something else, the other operating systems I mentioned support devices for a lot longer. And if you’re not using this as a main device for payments, photos, messaging, banking, etc, then there are less risks in terms of security and you could even buy something a bit older than the 4a.

In terms of video streaming, the Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+ and Note 9 all have beautiful 1440p AMOLED displays with no notch. I still use a Note 9 myself and it’s really enjoyable to watch videos on. I even used to watch movies on it before I bought a tablet. Those three phones have great custom operating system support (no Graphene or Calyx though) and were very popular back in the day so there are lots available to buy secondhand. If you are buying this as a main phone, I would maybe recommend against it due to their age but for a second device they would be excellent (assuming you can find one for close to your budget).

EDIT: I should mention those three phones also have SD card slots and headphone jacks, which makes them even better again as media consumption devices.

Ilandar ,

One year newer I guess. I think there’s a 5G model of the S10 too, so that may inflate prices. Personally I think the S9 was a much better phone. It has a headphone jack, SD card slot (which wasn’t available on the S10 5G) and no selfie camera notch/cut-out. The S10 series is when Samsung phones started going downhill badly. Though the S10e was a great phone, my partner has used one for the last 4 years. It does have a slightly lower resolution screen and it’s small with a selfie camera cut-out, so not quite as good for watching videos.

S10 series all have good custom OS software too though, so not a bad choice either.

(rec) riseup vpn is a free VPN that supports P2P

Riseup vpn is a free, donations based VPN, that doesn’t require an account and has no logs policey. They doesn’t have lots of serves like Protonvpn for example but they’re running for years and support P2P, so if someone is too short for paying for a VPN, I think its a pretty good for some use cases.

Ilandar ,

The catch is that free services like this are run for people who need them, not people who want to save money. In my opinion it is very scabby to use something like RiseUp for potentially data intensive tasks like torrenting if you can afford a paid VPN service. Leave it for those who genuinely need it.

Ilandar ,

The quality is terrible, though. All of these sites rely on the same bitrate starved YTS rips. It’s why torrenting remains popular for people who care about presentation, because you have so many more options than just the absolute bare minimum.

Ilandar ,

Fair enough if you have no standards but don’t pretend it’s a choice between YTS and remuxes with nothing in-between. There is a very noticeable increase in quality just going from YTS to anything slightly larger.

Ilandar ,

Not sure why this is down voted other than some people may not consider it ‘casual’.

Considering that was the entire point of the thread, why do you assume there is another reason?

Ilandar ,

1337x and TorrentGalaxy are generally pretty decent. Compare bitrates for audio and video and take note of the names of the release group. You’ll start to develop a mental list of names to look for. In terms of films, I’d recommend looking for Tigole releases on 1337x as a starting point.

Ilandar ,

Won’t happen. That country is obsessed with being seen wearing its big boy pants, to the detriment of everything. Their entire culture is built around the myth of American exceptionalism and it inhibits any potential for learning or even just rational decision making. It is in their DNA to be offensively stupid and contrarian at every opportunity.

Ilandar ,

BALDUR’S GATE 3 IS WOKE TRASH

Ilandar ,

Not AAA devs, they’re doing what they can.

Blaming consumers, in this instance. You could well be right that the problem is internal but in that case that’s where it needs to solved. Or if they want to get the support of consumers, be honest with their reasoning. Crying that the expectations of consumers are too high doesn’t help at all. It just makes them seem out of touch with reality.

Ilandar ,

I can’t find developers doing this.

This entire story was started by game developers on social media (Twitter) complaining about consumer expectations in the wake of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Ilandar ,

Yeah it’s a great game. Monolith and the Zelda devs constantly knock it out of the park with these huge titles.

Ilandar ,

I engage a lot more with general communities than I used to because the quality of poster is so much higher here. People are more likely to engage in good faith discussion and offer more than just those low effort redditor joke comments that site has become notorious for. There is just no point commenting in larger communities and threads on reddit, because you’ll get buried by lazy meme comments and the one person who does sort by new is mostly likely looking for conflict rather than a conversation.
