Why do people still download music from YouTube in 2024? The quality is awful and it’s not even the easiest method of music piracy.

Ilandar ,

5 is the “small” (medium) series, 1 is the big flagship and 10 is the mid-range option.

Ilandar ,

I think the actual takeaway here is to not elevate people to the status of “genius” in the first place. Stop worshipping celebrities, they are only humans like the rest of us.

Ilandar ,

Marketing relies on the gullibility of the consumer. If you start from the position of “this person is just another human like me and I am better at some things than them” then celebrities suddenly aren’t so magical and special anymore. It becomes a lot easier to see through the PR bullshit.

The baseline S series is not a flagship product. Samsung deliberately cuts features from it to sell their actual flagship, the Ultra series. A definition of flagship:

the best or most important product, idea, building, etc. that an organization owns or produces

The baseline S series is not the best. It is also not the most important, because it sells considerably less than the Ultra.

Flagship does not mean “it has an 8 series Snapdragon or equivalent inside”. This has never been the definition of flagship. Please stop using the word like this.

Small phone users should also temper their expectation

Every time there is a small phone thread here or on reddit most of the comments are from people complaining that there is no small phone with the equivalent features of their near 7-inch flagship. People do not seem to weigh size in the same way as other features and are not willing to make compromises for it. Small phone fans need to think seriously about how important and practical all their supposedly “essential” high end features actually are versus physical size. There have been plenty of chances to buy and own smaller phones in the past and these people didn’t buy them because they weren’t perfect. This is the result.

Ilandar ,

Definitely agree with OP. 4K is completely unnecessary on a display this size but moving to one of these weird in-between aspect ratios is a clear downgrade. 16:9 or 21:9 is where it’s at as most video content is displayed in either of those, 21:9 has the added benefit of making larger phones easier to hold and use one-handed.

Ilandar ,

If they were going to adopt some industry standards, why couldn’t it be longer software support? That’s the one area where their phones are consistently below-par now.

Ilandar ,

Do you think that would actually be implemented globally?

Ilandar ,

But that potentially implies that the regular Zenfone will no longer be a flagship, in the same way the regular Galaxy or Pixel phones are not the flagships for their respective manufacturers.

Ilandar ,

Neither of those phones are actually flagships. Like I get that some people just use that word to mean any phone with an 8 series Snapdragon but that’s not actually what it means. The Galaxy Ultra and the Xperia 1 are the flagship phones for those manufacturers.

Ilandar ,

I wouldn’t say “huge”. It’s a medium sized phone, the same as the iPhone and Zenfone.

Ilandar ,

Sony phones have absolutely dreadful software support for their price. Even the flagships only get security updates for 3 years and they are among the most expensive phones you can buy.

Ilandar ,

My partner has an Onyx Boox Palma, which is similar in some ways. It’s fast and would be usable as a basic smartphone if it could take a SIM card. Despite the display being one of the best it is ultimately still e-ink and has many downsides if you are trying to use it like you would a normal smartphone. The ideal target market for this kind of device is really people that have already cut down their screen time and can comfortably live without most things, but still want the option to install any application if necessary.

If you want a more conventional smartphone experience, the TCL NXTPAPER devices may be a better alternative, though they obviously have their own downsides as they do not have true e-ink displays.

Ilandar ,

My first thought too. That, and K-Pop. There are a lot of hardcore fans throughout SEA who don’t have the income required to legally access all the content released by and/or featuring their favourite stars.

Ilandar ,
Ilandar ,

When I browse with mullvad I constantly have to verify that I’m not a bot.

That’s a good sign

Isn’t that standard for most VPNs?

Ilandar ,

Something cheap with port forwarding. I personally use Proton VPN but that’s because I use my VPN for more than just torrenting.

Ilandar ,

The S9 still has really good custom ROM support so I wouldn’t say there’s any particularly compelling reason to get a new phone.

Ilandar ,

Meme phone for sure but the industry is so boring now that I’ve started to appreciate these occasional weird designs out of China.

Ilandar ,

Wow I’m surprised so many people still use facebook.

30 seconds in a month counts as an active user, so it’s not really surprising. A lot of small business, event and community information is still tied up in the Facebook ecosystem, forcing people to keep their accounts around for those occasional logins. We’re not talking about 3 billion people using it for hours a day.

Ilandar ,

Buy a second drive and boot into it for Windows gaming. Do everything else on Linux. Personally I have found this to be the least frustrating, best performing solution with the added benefit of segregating gaming from work/study and vice versa.

I'm tired with all this Big-Phone-Elitism

I’m someone with relatively small hands, plus I want my phone to be on the smaller side since I prefer to use my tablet/computer/tv to watch content. But this trend where many manufacturers tend to keep futures away from smaller phones to drive people to bigger phones is driving me crazy and really makes it hard for me to buy...

Ilandar , (edited )

Yeah they were probably the last great small Android phones. The “small” phones of today like the Zenfone and base Galaxy S series are noticeably larger.

EDIT: Just want to add that both the XZ1 Compact and the XZ2 Compact are still being maintained. The XZ1 Compact supports both iodéOS and LineageOS for microG, while the XZ2 Compact is an official LineageOS device. Obviously not a perfect solution for everyone but they are still viable if size is a key issue for you.

Ilandar ,

The future of small phones is the flip format. I know that’s likely not what any of you want to hear, but it’s the truth. Small slates are critically endangered at this point.

Ilandar ,

I have a moto razr 40 at the moment, the crease is pretty good. Depending on the angle it will show with a dark background and when the screen is off. On a lighter/white background the crease is not visible. It’s also less noticeable to the touch than any other flip smartphone. I can’t comment too much on durability since most common issues are going to show up after years, not months, but I think overall the industry is making progress with regards to hinge and display design. The current generation all fold flat now and have a different hinge structure. As I understand it flip smartphones are selling well so hopefully that means they keep working on the technology and improving it.

Ilandar ,

Reviews won’t give a definitive answer on the durability of the hinge. The average reviewer doesn’t spend anywhere near long enough with a smartphone to have any worthwhile opinion on its durability, and even the people who do these hinge tests on YouTube have no real idea. You cannot accurately predict these things after just a few days of rudimentary testing.

Ilandar ,

A lot of people just add “reddit” to their search query. It does work pretty well, but I realise not every Lemmy user will be willing to do that.

Ilandar ,

For sure, it is certainly a better option than SEO listicles though. If people push bad products there is always the potential for community push back.

Ilandar ,

You aren’t paying extra solely for the modular design. I don’t know why tech enthusiasts always hand wave the social and environmental benefits of Fairphone away when they are the key focus of the company.

Ilandar ,

For what it’s worth they are aware that some of their readers do not like the email subscription model. They acknowledge it isn’t a perfect solution but they also don’t have many alternatives currently as a small, independent media company trying to survive and grow.

Ilandar ,

I don’t get why millennials and older generations mock zoomers for these trends. What’s wrong with enjoying old technology and childhood nostalgia? People are so needlessly petty when it comes to younger generations and their interests.

Ilandar ,

Yeah it’s particularly weird from millennials because it wasn’t that long ago our “avocado toast” generation was absolutely copping it from boomers.

Ilandar ,

I don’t mind hearing about these trends in younger generations but it depends how they’re covered. Like the dumphone/flip phone one is a very positive news story and I think quite interesting to reflect on.

Ilandar ,

This post strikes me as a little hyperbolic but I definitely agree that they’ve gone downhill in a lot of ways. I have a 3a and that genuinely feels better made than the more expensive 7a I tested recently. They had a good thing going with the size and feel of their older devices and they totally fucked it.

Ilandar ,

Why do you need an app for banking…?

Ilandar ,

Yes, pretty much. A web browser is almost always more secure and, at least in the case of my credit union, just as fast with a very usable interface. Whenever I see these people who say “oh I really wanted to use X ROM but it doesn’t work with my banking app” I have to question their commitment to the project and/or level of ignorance. It’s such a minor/non-existent issue to make or break a custom ROM.

Ilandar ,

And even though lab-grown chicken has FDA approval, there’s doubt whether lab meat will ever compete with the real thing. Chicken goes for $4.99 a pound at the supermarket. Upside still isn’t saying how much the lab version costs to make, but a few bites of it sell for $45 at a Michelin-starred restaurant in San Francisco.

Dumb comparison? I’m pretty sure a few bites of real chicken is also going to cost a lot at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Ilandar ,

I don’t really understand how its market share is so low now.

Everyone has a Google account, Chrome comes preinstalled on many web-enabled devices, people don’t realise how bad Chrome is compared to alternatives, people don’t understand they can search with Google on any web browser, etc. Most people are not particularly tech literate and don’t really understand what they are doing. They just use the most popular/advertised product and assume it is the best choice for them. Even in Lemmy privacy communities, where you’d expect users to be more tech literate, I’ve come across many people who don’t even know that browser export/import is a standard feature everywhere, or that other browsers have their own versions of cross device sync. They think they’re locked into Chrome and moving to Firefox would mean completely starting again from nothing.

Ilandar ,

The plastic back feels pretty bad (cheap and flexes inwards) and it’s way too thick and heavy (also too large, but so is almost every phone these days). Still, a great phone if those aspects don’t bother you.

Ilandar ,

You should know that list isn’t entirely accurate. My instance is listed despite the owner never having signed the petition and remaining undecided.

Ilandar ,

Nice for people that need it but I basically only require 2 - 3 extensions for mobile browsing and they were all supported already. There is a lot of overlap and extension redundancy out there. Many people still think they need like 5+ different privacy related extensions, for example, when uBlock Origin can do basically everything (including removing paywalls).

Ilandar ,

You can use this one and this one.

Ilandar ,

What’s the difference in terms of features?

Ilandar ,

Yeah but I’m asking what the difference is between the extension and adding the extension’s filter list to uBlock. The other person said the extension is “more fully featured” but it doesn’t appear to do much more than circumvent paywalls. It still seems like an unnecessary extension.

Ilandar ,

Thanks, that’s the kind of answer I was hoping for. :)

Ilandar ,

I see you conveniently left out the bit where they said people could also just be naive. Kind of funny how you attempted to take the moral high ground and lecture this person like they were a small child, yet you yourself cherrypicked in bad faith just to have some little takedown moment. One of you certainly came off more childish and immature in this exchange and it wasn’t the other guy.

Ilandar ,

Myth 11: Microblogging is a healthy and productive use of your time.

Ilandar ,

Creators should be able to sell their content directly to us without middlemen like these.

They can and do. Most are just lazy/uneducated/choose not to.
