A few rule changes on community's reaction: Elon Musk personal rants, overzealous advertisement posts, non-essential crypto news effectively disallowed | Ask in DM before posting product reviews or ad

Non-essential crypto news covers crypto advertisement, insignificant news that does not affect legit users like XMR/ETH/BTC holders or darknet users, posts relating to garbage like Brave browser and its coin, and so on. Due to the multiple kinds of crypto posts that pop up, this rule will be applied subjectively on a...

I started to use RSS to subscribe to Lemmy topics to be able to run my own rules to filter content that I don’t want to see. So using RSS helps a lot to not waste time on things you don’t want to see.

blkpws ,

Adding a subscription payment isn’t tech, there are more companies than Starlink, Twitter, Tesla, and SpaceX, and we aren’t posting everything that a company do, just with Twitter or Tesla because they are popular and Elon Musk a meme… Mercedes for example has better autopilot than Tesla, Porsche has better electric vehicle than Tesla, but I don’t see people posting about that every time. I think there is an excessive posting of his stuff, and he just loves to get fame. I suppose that’s why he does stupid and crazy nonsense stuff like naming a good and popular brand name as Twitter to X… it’s like destroying all what was already built just to keep his name on news.

blkpws ,

I’m not an expert to define what is what.

He is relevant because he is rich, and any stupid idea like naming Twitter as X makes everyone talk about it.
redirect.invidious.io/watch?v=rNVfYWZdKQM

blkpws ,

I just think it’s a stupid question, not worth to overthink about it. Go ahead where you want to go and don’t ask me those stuffs.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology
dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/tech

blkpws ,

You’re going to ban all social media topics too?

Only if they become spammy, I suppose. I already sent you this video where explains how Elon Musk is just re-inventing things that already exists, but what he’s doing with Twitter seems like a 15 years old kid playing with his new toy… and isn’t really doing anything interesting or new to society.

blkpws ,

Didn’t he replied to you with:

The product itself (the code) may be considered tech but the company’s/employee’s/executive’s business/personal/anything outside of the product dealings shouldn’t be. If running a website makes any information related to you tech related then literally every company is a tech company.

Or what you are expecting to get? Just say it yourself already and stop asking to people…

blkpws ,

But he replied…

blkpws ,

Yeah, I agree, social media is part of tech, it’s just spammy.

blkpws ,

I’m just saying that asking that to people makes no sense, just say what you want to say… we aren’t here to define what is what but to share our thoughts I suppose… So don’t ask me those stuff and just say your opinion or teach us with your knowledge…

blkpws ,

Yeah right, but you aren’t saying it at all, you’re just making it long and asking people what is tech… And other people are already telling that anything can be tech too… So the “ban musk spam” is mainly because those news aren’t actually any interesting. And I suppose when they say “social media is not tech” they are talking about that they are using tech infrastructures and methods, but the communication between people isn’t a tech stuff.

blkpws ,

Thanks, very useful. But you missed this one dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/tech

blkpws ,

Ok sorry, reading it now seems you’re trying to relate the “telecommunication” with “social interaction” which could be done physically in person. Is that? Or what you wanted to say with that Wikipedia link?

blkpws ,

Well, sorry, I really don’t get what you wanted to say with the last link… I hope you do understand what I mean too…

Random thought: Windows is largely successful because of Piracy

Windows as a software package would have never been affordable to individuals or local-level orgs in countries like India and Bangladesh (especially in the 2000’s) that are now powerhouses of IT. Same for many SE Asian, Eastern European, African and LatinoAmerican countries as well....

LOL Linux runs the world. redirect.invidious.io/watch?v=mZXx5oErnIc
The problem was that it was not user-friendly, and you needed to know how to use it. Now things are changing and seems it can run games even faster.

blkpws ,

Hahaha, the problem is the things you don’t know, not only on servers, on more devices that you ignore and skip just to make fun of it right now.

blkpws ,

Yeah, Windows is easier because it don’t have many distros and when you buy a new PC it already comes with it (no need to boot a Live ISO to install from 0) so that helps people to get started with their first OS, a Windows, so that’s why most people know how to use Windows.

You might want to read this awesome blog: duncanlock.net/…/using-windows-after-15-years-on-…

blkpws ,

You’re funny xD, but it is already, just not for normal desktop users.

blkpws , (edited )

But they frame it as going online and downloading from a website; you can do that on either OS even though it’s not something you should ever do. It’s just user error

I don’t think those regular users uses the terminal to install their apps. winget is 3 years old… and is much easier and faster to just run sudo pacman -Syu or sudo apt update ; sudo apt upgrade (no via Windows updates that forces you to do stuff you don’t want to). Many things changes… and the freedom that Linux gives to use what you like as you like is missing on Windows, starting with the Desktop Environment… KDE has many more features, faster and uses less RAM than any Windows.

Most regular users on Windows stills goes on “google.com” and search for their programs, and then things like this happens: arstechnica.com/…/google-hosted-malvertising-lead…

😔

blkpws ,

Not the same amount of people will do that, if they learn that any app is installed via the same app, pamac or whatever Ubuntu has to install those packages. It’s harder for them to look outside that app and if they do, probably, and I hope they will get into the community forums. Where they can get to know how that works with transparency, something missing on Windows.

But yeah, virus and scams exists everywhere, just that Linux users don’t need to download a .exe or .msi to install anything by default, as far as I know on people around me, they don’t know winget exist, even the most gamer.

blkpws , (edited )

I don’t mind talking about Windows, Apple or Linux, but when someone says Linux is just for a “toast”… makes me think of how many devices runs Linux and not only toasters which I’m sure they also do if there is some screen display or Wi-Fi features.

So I reply to them if they talk about it, yeah.

Palestine had more than 80% of the population unemployed. They have been killed by thousand every year.

Then this:
theguardian.com/…/gaza-strip-protesters-received-…
amnesty.org/…/israels-apartheid-against-palestini…

And you’re only worried about 18 Thais…?

blkpws ,

Well, what I mean is that you have sympathy for 18 individuals, but you are ignoring the 2,000,000 Palestinians living on that prison, as I said, getting killed, injured and humiliated for decades. So where is your sympathy to the 2,000,000 Palestinians? I think you don’t have any because your government is telling you “Hamas is terrorist” (like Instagram bug with their translator, changing Palestine to terrorists) and they are so bad… but they not telling you all the bad things Israel is doing. Israel didn’t kill more than 50 Hamas members with those attacks they are doing (they don’t even care to release the people kidnapped), they are just killing citizens and then plan to eliminate them all and kick them from their small territory (Gaza). You don’t even seems to know the reason of why Hamas did that attack on 7/10.

EDIT: en.wikipedia.org/…/Israeli–Palestinian_peace_proc…

Nevertheless, there is a range of ulterior motives for Israel’s denial of Palestinian statehood. If Palestine were declared a state, then immediately, Israel, by its present occupation of the West Bank will be in breach of the United Nations Charter. Palestine, as a state, could legitimately call upon the inherent right of individual or collective self-defense under Article 51 of the Charter to remove Israel from the occupied territories. Palestine, as a state, would be able to accede to international conventions and bring legal action against Israel on various matters. Palestine could accede to various international human rights instruments, such as the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It could even join the International Criminal Court and file cases against Israel for war crimes. It would be a tinderbox of a situation that is highly likely to precipitate conflict in the Middle East.[27]

There is a lively debate around the shape that a lasting peace settlement would take (see for example the One-state solution and Two-state solution). Authors like Cook have argued that the one-state solution is opposed by Israel because the very nature of Zionism and Jewish nationalism calls for a Jewish majority state, whilst the two-state solution would require the difficult relocation of half a million Jewish settlers living in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.[28] The Palestinian leaders such as Salam Fayyad have rejected calls for a binational state or unilateral declaration of statehood. As of 2010, only a minority of Palestinians and Israelis support the one-state solution.[29] Interest in a one-state solution is growing, however, as the two-state approach fails to accomplish a final agreement.[30][31]

That’s why Israel will never make peace.

Various “transfers of power and responsibilities” in the Gaza Strip and West Bank from Israel to the Palestinians took place in the mid-1990s.[39] The Palestinians achieved self-governance of major cities in the West Bank and the entire Gaza Strip. Israel maintained and continues to maintain a presence in the West Bank for security reasons. In 2013 Israel still had control of 61% of the West Bank, while the Palestinians had control of civic functions for most of the Palestinian population.

So they never wanted to give back the Palestine territory.

blkpws ,

I don’t understand, you mean you are doing more than me because you are pointing us that they are the “poorest souls” and that they live in a bad situation?

I was going to say “Wayland is still not ready, not all apps are compatible and needs more time”… so good they planned it in 2 years, I’m sure all apps will be compatible with Wayland then, or they will not be deserved to be used anymore. 🤣 hahaha, Wayland is amazing. Wayland is the way!

blkpws ,

Have a happy 4.20!

4.20

blkpws ,

What is it associated with? For me, it’s just the time when the stoners smoke the weed, because at that time no one bothers or mind if you are high. And weed is a drug, as coffee and your PC addictions could be. Alcohol is a worse drug, so.

more than just drugs

On plural? How many more drugs it is about? XD I thought it was just weed…

blkpws ,

Well I use a lot an app that isn’t compatible with Wayland, they already said they will work with that so if they take much longer I will just need to find an alternative… that I’m sure there will be one. I want to use Wayland because yeah, it’s great, and I love using it, but I can’t as the app I use daily isn’t compatible. I suppose not everyone uses the same apps… And that’s also why I said I will stop using it if they don’t start with the support to Wayland. 🙂

blkpws ,

Well I didn’t know about that and it’s very disgusting…

blkpws ,

Yeah, I can understand it now…

blkpws ,

Synergy 3 - symless.com/synergy

blkpws ,

I read this:

Project goals

… We will also have our eye on Wayland when the time comes.

Seems they still aren’t compatible with Wayland… that’s why I said if in 2 years none of they still don’t support Wayland… I’m sure there will be another tool (“Barrier” for example) that supports it and will be the time to move on to another software.

blkpws ,

Thanks for the info!!

blkpws ,

@Swiggles commented that the Input Leap Project (a fork from Barrier from the active developers) already supports Wayland (I still need to mess with it). And Synergy (I think) uses Barrier, or it’s a Barrier fork also. So I will need to switch to Input Leap if I want to use it right now with Wayland! 🙂

blkpws ,

I suppose you also configure some fail2ban rules to ban those bots. Seems to be the easier way.

blkpws ,

There is a guide how to protect password brute force over SSH, which is the most attacked medium.com/…/installing-and-configuring-fail2ban-…

But I also recommend you to change the SSH port to another, is simple and pretty effective as all those bots are always using the default port and not doing a deep scan.

blkpws ,

Oh well, I only run services on my cloud, so I need to get SSH to manage them. hehehe 😄

blkpws ,

Now it’s faster and everything is managed by plugins, giving more freedom: redirect.invidious.io/watch?v=VkG1YrNgb7U

Yeah, I just installed Geany 2 to test, but I always used Kate. Let’s see if Geany can replace it. 🙂

I think, the biggest issue is that Hamas channel was also giving info to Palestinians for important stuff that could save some Palestinians their lifes. That’s what Telegram owner said about why not blocking it.

“Telegram has taken an opposite approach. Durov even went as far as making the ridiculous claim that Hamas should be allowed to continue to post on Telegram as it uses the platform to warn Israelis ahead of attacks.” - www.calcalistech.com/ctechnews/article/sjpbqgkba

KVM: linux-kvm.org/page/Main_Page

It’s like VirtualBox but more efficient but also less secure so you can decide if you want KVM or VirtualBox.

blkpws ,

Well, for me, you are the terrorist apologist. Calling Israel to kill all the citizens in Gaza… they did nothing.

blkpws ,

Any person from Israel from age 16 up to 70 are forced to be listed on the army as reservist, Israel citizens are part of their army (as reservists) while Palestine citizens aren’t, at least not those 2000 children. Hamas was voted by Palestine in 2006, so yeah. washingtonpost.com/…/israel-military-draft-reserv…

blkpws ,

That’s why you never heard a peep from them about the murders of innocent Palestinians

I even heard that Israel soldiers instead to shoot to kill, they shoot on legs, this way doesn’t count as “dead”.
