Smallest Security/Privacy Focused Distro Help?

I’ve been doing some scouring and my search results are coming back confusing. Usually either incomplete information, or some kind of sales spam, so I’m reaching out in the hopes of recommendations for actual linux users and fans. I am looking for a very small, tiny even, security/privacy focused distro. I don’t mind doing...

Quite a controversial take, but I think dietpi is a very solid choice, even for x86 PCs.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Nah, the average “just werks” user won’t leave Windows even if it took money out of its credit card.

Download Ubuntu 24.04

Found the Windows poser.

I too can’t wait when biologically-modified dogs, cats and alike beat videogames using their own undeveloped-yet-modified brain for the first time.

Looks fun and very intuitive. Thanks for sharing!

…well… that is how I started learning (and getting used to) GNU/Linux, so eh.

Little help here linux guys? Trying to figure out what distro to use

Yeah. It’s another one of these. But! Here me out! So I have some experience using Linux. Run some VMs for services I run in my home, I switched my surface book 3 (funnily enough) to ubuntu for my work computer as I was getting more and more frustrated by windows 11 and it turned out really good. Was able to completely get off...

All distros are free – just choose whatever you find interesting, give it a spin, see what happens.

As someone who switched to wayland way back when sway was dominant…? About time.

A “stupidly minimal” cli package that monitors power usage in real time. Bonus points if it is written in C++, with zero dependencies.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Not really – it has way too many “bells and whistles” to be called as “stupidly minimal”. Then again, what I had in mind was something more straightforward with nothing else than “Current power draw: (number goes here)W. Updates every 3 seconds.”

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Eh, just try new commands in your distro and see what happens – “time is the best teacher of em all”.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

imo, that is like learning a new language you’ll never use – who on earth would search for new employees that can compile their own distro? It’s fun at first, but definitely not useful.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Being fun does not make (thing) a necessity let alone useful – there are a lot of useless things that are fun.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

“Bloat” implies “excess”, “overloaded” – anything that has been installed and used without my consent or a badly optimized package/command.

Is gentoo Linux really worth it?

I’ve installed gentoo but there seems like there’s so many sacrifices. I love that it’s all open source, but I really don’t mind closed source software now and then, because after all I would be using it to play closed source games. The biggest compromise I’ve observed is the very long build times. I have a lukewarm...

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

afaik, the “main gimmick” of gentoo is to have a distro that is 100% optimized for your PC. That aside, I don’t see a point installing it unless your PC is centuries old and really need the extra speed boost.

I dislike wayland

Quite the unpopular opinion, but I just wanted to post this to show the silent majority that we still exist. We have reached a point where voicing criticism against wayland is treated like the worst thing ever and leads you to being censored and what not. The red hat funded multi year long shill campaign has proven to be quite...

Arch linux. Minimal install, hyprland. $ROOTSYS* set to ro, ~/.cache and ~/Downloads to tmpfs. alsa, bemenu, wine-staging, lutris. Couldn’t be happier.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Eh, did a little “oopsie” there, my bad.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Even a smol potato like the Orange pi zero 3 (which -still- has zero linux support) can run Linux, so don’t worry about it.

@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

tl;dr: Windows poser roleplaying as a Linux tryhard tries to convince a new Linux user

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Just tell em, “What if I told you theres an OS with no annoying ads popping on your screen 24/7?” – “Yeah? Is that a modified Wi–” – “Nope. Linux”. And bam. :^)

I am thinking about hosting my own Mastodon server from home on a Raspberry Pi (Pi4 8GB)?

  1. Are there good tutorials out there?
  2. What's the annual cost just to host yourself?

@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Pretty sure that’d rip your microsd in half really quick.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

I know that cheating ruins games and all, but straightaway opening a hole on my system because of such isn’t the right way to deal with it.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Popularity =/= quality tho. See: Windows. :^)

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Eh.

Alt + F4 to close running commands

Alt + enter for full screen

Alt + (arrow key) to switch between windows

Alt + p to run bemenu

thats it

Looking for advice on a kid/tamper proof retro gaming experience

I’m looking for some advice on setting up a retro gaming system for my son. He absolutely loves the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and some Atari classics like Frogger. The problem I have is he is autistic, which leads to two very different issues to solve. First is he loves to tinker with things. Which I don’t mind, and actively...

Thats a smart take. “There ain’t no better teacher than experience.”

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Somehow unrelated to what this video proposes, Linux has taught and gave me so many possibilities that I would never, ever be able to if I (still) were using Windows to this very day. In other words… thanks to Linux, I can now operate and have fun in a under 3W device.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Indeed! I’m not planning to go back to Winblows unless I’m being paid for it.

Theres your problem.

I feel like breaking my windows install was a rite of passage

Lately ive noticed that i was wanting to do certain things on Windows that just seemed much easier and more intuitive on Linux, based in the OS specific solutions i would see to problems i encountered. And i was more frequently using software where Windows support seemed like an after thought....

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

My “rite of passage” to the magical world of GNU/Linux was… well… boredom. My Windows install was run fresh, with TCPOptimizer, with some things removed out of its core… until I took the decision of “trying to figure out how to use Linux even if it means losing my sanity.”

…and here we are. Sanity is still intact tho…

…I think. :^)

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Yes officer, this heretic right here.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

“Not exactly Linux”, but FreeBSD. Gave it a couple tries but gave up when I realized its minimalism is a placebo at best and its “super security features” can (also) be achieved on any other standard Linux distribution.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

When folks will stop with the “If Linux won’t become another Windows, it’ll fail” mentality? Linux is not Winblows – and we really mean it. To “increase adoption” users need to acknowledge (only) this – that both Windows and Linux differs from one another and that won’t change in any time soon.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Why not? It’s simple, lightweight, has a lot of interesting commands that fills its respective niche really well (btop, for instance) and (the best of all) it doesn’t explode my PC everytime I run such commands.

"Combokeys" instead of hotkeys. [Feature/new command suggestion]

Title. Basically, “if a street fighter gamer and a linux tryhard had a baby” where a combination of keys is issued to run a command/script rather than a single or a simultaneous stroke of two or more. i.e left, down, left, right arrow keys, R_CTRL to run Firefox. Right, right, Up, right arrow keys, delete to power off the...

Asides from “ew installing Winblows stuff in my distro ewwww” that will be a gamechanger if they do it right.

No, but I used this back when I was a little penguin and I had to “see” something working on Linux.

NixOS on OnePlus 6 with Extra Steps, or the Diary of my Descent into Madness (pavluk.org)

My biggest blog post yet, and it’s about running (almost) vanilla NixOS on a (formerly) Android phone! This was 50% fun and 50% exhausting… you solve one issue and another one crops up right away… it was certainly an interesting educational experience....

GustavoM ,

Why do you hate yourself this much?

j/k. nicely done. I’d feel like a hacker if I could do this on my phone, but I’m too scared to brick it.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Imagine giving away user control and privacy for more battery life.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

That’d be true if I were a Winblows tryhard. Thankfully, it’s not the case. :^)

Is Ubuntu deserving the hate? (lemmy.ml)

Long story short, I have a desktop with Fedora, lovely, fast, sleek and surprisingly reliable for a near rolling distro (it failed me only once back around Fedora 34 or something where it nuked Grub). Tried to install on a 2012 i7 MacBook Air… what a slog!!! Surprisingly Ubuntu runs very smooth on it. I have been bothering all...

In a nutshell, Ubluntu is trying to take user control off its users. And the users are mad because of it.

And yes, I’m talking about snap.

Just moved to Linux: a follow up

I recently made a post discussing my move to Linux on Fedora, and it’s been going great. But today I think I have now become truly part of this community. I ran a command that borked my bootloader and had to do a fresh install. Learned my lesson with modifying the bootloader without first doing thorough investigation lol....

Trial-and-error is a beautiful thing, isn’t it?

t. Had to reinstall GNU/Linux several times through the course of months while trying new stuff and/or trying to improve the current ones.

This is simply perfect, and masterfully done. Thank you very much, I’ll definitely use this.
