I still have the helldivers itch but bugs are starting to diminish my enjoyment. The last few days in particular have been extremely buggy. My weapons have disappeared, extraction has bugged out, side objectives autocompleting (I couldn’t activate a radar on one mission because it completed itself), lairs not completing despite destroying all the spawners, mobs spawn right next to me, I’ve gotten stuck inside terrain, kicked to orbit by poor connection, crashed the game.

The game is great when it works, but it’s definitely unstable right now.

I hope so too. It’s a great game.

How Do You Deal With Thumb Stick Drift? (lemmy.world)

So I like to use Xbox controllers (doesn’t matter if it’s first- or third-party) because I like the layout, it’s just comfortable to me. However I’ve noticed that on all my controllers in the past few years, the left thumb stick will start to “give out” over the course of a couple months. For instance I’ll be...

GoodEye8 ,

but not always (see switch joycons).

And PS5 one. I’ve had a lot of controllers over the years and I’ve never had stick drift, except with joycons and the PS5 controller.

The switch pro controller is probably my most used controller, because it’s so ergonomic. I put the switch pro controller through a few thousand hours of smash bros. The stick is visibly deformed from mashing certain inputs over and over. And then a few thousand hours more playing Zelda and monster hunter (and souls games on PC). I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s had over 10 thousand hours of use. No stick drift on the controller.

I was gifted a PS5 controller because I was planning on getting the PS5. I never got a PS5, but that’s a different story. Anyway I decided to break it in to get comfortable with the layout and feel of the controller. Maybe max thousand hours of playtime which I’d consider it very light usage. And the left stick started to drift left. I’ve looked into it. It might just be an unfortunate speck of dust interfering with the sensor, but cleaning it requires almost complete disassembly and quite frankly it wasn’t that good of a controller anyway so it’s just collecting dust.

Had to check if it’s not made by Uwe Boll. Guess in a sense he was ahead of his time as Hollywood is now doing his shtick.

GoodEye8 ,

He’s right. There’s no clearcut answer to the questions. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. What kind of an answer does OP expect with an open question like that?

GoodEye8 ,

Short answer is, you can’t. That’s why I don’t read books.

Longer answer is that even if you read a book you can still understand what of happening in the book, you simply won’t get a visual image of what you read. Makes books pretty boring to read IMO.

GoodEye8 ,

Setting aside that there really shouldn’t even be an anticheat in a PvE game (unless progression allows you to unlock items that are real world currency based on which I could see why they’d want to stop people from accessing it without one of their two methods)

I can think of another reason. It’s a live service game where it’s the community vs the game masters. They want to tell a story within the game and direct us with community challenges. Right now there’s a challenge to protect planets from automaton invasions. We lost the first planet, won a few but it’s not looking as much of a clearcut victory like the first challenge was. There’s a real chance we fail this challenge and maybe that part of their plan?

So what would happen if you let cheaters run amok? Now you can’t tell a story where the community fails, because cheaters can guarantee wins. If you make it so hard cheaters can’t win you’re going to make it completely impossible for the community and that’s just not fun. So what can you do to make it fun for the community? Crack down on cheaters.

I just don’t see another rational reason to have anticheat. Even the real world currency isn’t that useful because it’s mostly for buying armors for cosmetic purposes. There’s really not much to gain from circumventing the real world currency.

GoodEye8 ,

It is. It’s just that 99% of the work has been automated away.

GoodEye8 ,

US elections are mostly by state not by county. You can see states that voted blue despite being majority red on the county level. And Alaska is the opposite example where county level seems more blue but the state is red. It’s a misleading map because it doesn’t represent population density. Most of red counties are low population areas.

The state distribution however is kinda BS, but the real reason republicans can have power with a clear minority is because of the FPTP voting that prefers a two party system instead of a multiparty system. GOP would be far more fringe party if more alternatives existed.

GoodEye8 ,

It’s not really that surprising when you know the whole blue and green bubble thing was targeted at teens and young adults, the two groups feeling the most societal pressure to fit in. Turns out when you make people not owning your devices clear outsiders then people not wanting to be outsiders will buy your products.

GoodEye8 ,

Yes, it’s high time we shut down the kinder surprise gambling dens.

GoodEye8 ,

It’s going to take all kids products with the idea as kinder surprise. All campaigns where you might win something for buying a product you’re going to buy anyway. All trading card games. I think there’s even an argument to be made that it would make looters, battle royales, even Minecraft as gambling because the end result of your gaming experience is random. Broadstroking all random away simply doesn’t work.

GoodEye8 ,

Can you name any ridiculous laws or regulations that negatively affect you? I have a hard time recalling any EU law or regulation that directly affects me without a good reason.

GoodEye8 ,

That doesn’t seem like a stupid or ridiculous regulation, you even agree that the basic idea is cool. The issue here isn’t the idea of the regulation, but the implementation by manufacturers. It will take time to get the implementation right and when it does the manufacturers will optimize the solution and the price will also come down. I don’t think anyone goes “ABS makes cars so expensive”, because the cost has been optimized.

GoodEye8 , (edited )

I think you’re giving him too much credit. The announcement that he owned Twitter shares already hiked the price. If he wanted to short pump and dump he should’ve just kept his mouth shut, get on the board and then sell his stocks. The initial hike to his 9% ownership was on par with his buy offer hike. If his plan was to pump the company he could’ve done it without the legal trouble. Also the second price hike was after he had already made a public bid for the company and the company had accepted the offer. At that point he was locked in to buying the company. There was speculation if such a deal is allowed to go through, but the reality is that unless someone else steps in Musk had two options, he either buys the company or he gets taken to court and is forced to buy the company.

He had to buy the company, but not because he was risking going to jail. He had to buy it because he screwed himself over by making the bid in the first place. I don’t get the need to make him seem like an intelligent man. He didn’t have any grand schemes or ulterior motives or someone else footing the bill. He simply made a horrible move, probably because he’s a huge manchild who didn’t like that the CEO of Twitter didn’t completely lick his boot.

GoodEye8 ,

I don’t remember the specifics but I think it was a sort of a “no questions asked” kind of bid, where he chose to not do the due diligence. He did try to play the “My estimation of Twitter was misled because I wasn’t disclosed to vital information” card and it got him nowhere.

I don’t think it’s reasonable to be this extremist, there are other ways to solve climate change. But since we’re already trying to fix it getting rid of capitalism would be the best way because we wouldn’t be fixing just the climate issue, we’d also be fixing a whole slew of other issues that are just next in line after the climate issue.

Weak labor laws? Where I live after 3 months (with some exceptions) they can’t just fire you. They pretty much have to prove you’re incapable of working or that the position will no longer exist (which in this scenario is probably not even possible) or have a collective layoff with some serious benefits for the laid off workers. I’ve seen some companies try to kinda coerce people into quitting to get around the laws (because they’re so much pain in the ass for shitty companies), but at that point you just have to stick to your rights and tell them to get fucked because they can’t do shit.

GoodEye8 ,

There are different forms of aphantasia. I have to try really hard to visualize something in my mind and often have to go into excruciating details to have a clear visualization. Something like TTRPG is unplayable for me because either I drag the entire party into mostly useless details (and we spend at least half an hour in one room) or I play like I have literally no senses. I could just be a talking head in someone’s bag.

In my case I’m pretty close to “no imagination”.

GoodEye8 ,

If they wanted to create something fresh then sure, but the end result was the same game they’ve released multiple times, except this time it’s with a new coat of paint.

They could’ve spent that time adding to an existing IP instead of creating a new IP to make the same thing again.

They still have to make sure their anticheat works on Linux. That’s the biggest missing support.

I know, but it still something developers need to do to support Linux

For those out of the loop and don’t care to check, Argentina and Turkey have had very volatile currencies for years now. Developers had to constantly update the pricing on those countries because the currencies keep losing value. So Valve decided to ease the burden on the developers and let them set the pricing based on the USD. That price then get converted to the local currency based on the exchange rate. When the exchange rate is 1 USD to ~800 peso it’s no wonder that game prices are insane.

GoodEye8 ,

It may still come to bite him in the ass. The trial is actually scheduled to May this year but the scheduling will be looked at in March. The charges themselves are pretty serious, I think it was something like 30 charges under the espionage act and 10 charges for obstruction of justice or false statements.

There’s a reason Trump wants to postpone it until after the election. His only shot at wiggling out of it is by becoming president.

GoodEye8 ,

There’s going to be a third one? I thought the second one added nothing of value, what are they going to with the third one? Discover another ultra rare resource that is going to become the focal point of human exploitation, but this time in a creature that lives underground? And poor Jake needs to relocate his family with the mole men?

GoodEye8 ,

Unless they found another legal loophole this will not happen. The reason Tesla can public test their FSD is because, legally, it’s only autonomous level 2 and the responsibility falls on the driver. But autonomous level 2 also requires the steering wheel because the driver is supposed to keep their hands on the wheel at all times. No wheel means no level 2 and no level 2 means stricter regulations and stricter regulations most likely means higher costs.

GoodEye8 ,

And guns don’t kill people. Once The bullet leaves the barrel it’s anyone’s guess where the bullet goes. If it happens to kill someone then the bullet was the issue, not the gun nor the person pulling the trigger.

GoodEye8 ,

I get the problem, but I don’t think it’s really applicable. Voting is a basic right of every citizen of the country. Presidency is not for everyone. You wouldn’t want a translator who doesn’t know the languages they’re supposed to translate? Why would you accept a president who is, let’s say mentally challenged?

I could understand objecting to specifics, like why should mental aptitude get tested, but I don’t understand being against the whole idea. IMO presidency is like a job and like most jobs there are specific requirements that a person needs to meet to be fit for that job. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have certain expectations of people who are running for president.

GoodEye8 ,

Well for starters you can spread awareness of how much the ultra rich steal. If you’re in the eroding middle class and see that you pay more taxes than the ultra rich you might be more incline to raise taxes on them.

If anything that would probably just screw people over if potential employers could see exactly how much money you make.

That actually goes both ways. That in a sense makes wages public which means the employers can’t screw over employees because most employees don’t know how much others make. And I don’t know how employers really benefit from it. If you’re in a position to demand more pay it doesn’t matter how much you currently make, what matters is how much they’re willing to pay to hire you. If they think less of you because of how much you make then you probably don’t want to work there anyway.

GoodEye8 ,

I don’t know much about him but from what I know he seems like the kind of guy who would put money above all. I’m guessing as long as he thinks he can benefit from Musk it doesn’t matter if his friend or employee is trans.

GoodEye8 ,

YOUR MOTHER WAS A HAMSTER AND YOUR FATHER SMELT OF ELDERBERRIES!

GoodEye8 ,

There’s a simple litmus test. Musk would never joke about himself in a self-deprecating way, in any capacity. He has such a fragile ego it would break if someone farted in his general direction.

You sure? I think it might be lower considering lost limbs and so. Pregnancies would raise it but pregnancy is temporary while lost limbs tend to be permanent.

GoodEye8 ,

That’s a really superficial take. For instance in MTG every format has “must have” cards, like fetchlands or shock lands (or dual lands), but beyond that there’s no “best” cards. There are “meta” cards that go into a specific meta deck and when you have one meta deck playing against another that’s when skill and strategy come into play. And it’s not like you must build a meta deck to play, you can build anti-meta decks or lab out a completely new meta deck. The problem is that such a level of deck building skills go way beyond what 99% of players are capable of doing. Even some of the best players in the world suck at deck building, because is an entirely different skillset to playing the game.

But it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. The modern meta looks very different to when I got into MTG 10+ years ago. Some are still around in some form, like regular Tron turned into mono-g tron and burn turned into boros burn. But the bans on Twin and Pod have killed those decks while Jund and Affinity have dropped out of the meta. In those place we have brand new decks like amulet titan or 5c Omnath. Somewhere in that timeframe we also got Eggs that was literally jank cards thrown into a pile of meta-defining solitaire playing, and then it got banned for being too boring.

You can get meta cards to build a meta deck but you can’t explicitly buy “best” cards because a new combination of “bad” cards can create a meta deck and then those become the new “best” cards.

GoodEye8 ,

The one with a better deck wins. If a homebrew deck goes against a meta deck then it’s likely the meta deck wins, but if you homebrew a deck with meta cards vs homebrewing without meta cards it comes down to how well the deck is built. A homebrew with all the meta cards but without any game plan or poor mana source distribution is going to do worse than a homebrew without meta cards, but with a clear plan and cards that support that plan.

People not building their own decks and instead just copying meta decks is another discussion.

GoodEye8 ,

I think the bigger issue is the variety of distros that end up not being compatible. Even if you overall have a lot of Linux users if they, for the sake of argument, distribute evenly between all distros then it’s still a lot of effort to code. The only difference is that the argument will change from “Linux has a small userbase” to “Distribution X has a small userbase”.

Linux doesn’t just need more users to be worthwhile to develop for, it also needs a distro agnostic solution to run software. That or significantly reducing (or streamlining) the amount of distros so the developers would have far less configurations to account for.

GoodEye8 ,

Dude, he didn’t really admit to any mistake.

That wasn’t the mistake here. The mistake was not being more kind and humane as we did.

He’s literally saying firing her was not the mistake. He still believes she should’ve been fired and not laid off. He also believes firing her based on nondescript performance metrics was right. The only thing he believes was wrong was how the firing was carried out. The only thing he’s admitting is that the firing wasn’t “PR friendly”, which is an indirect way of saying the mistake was getting caught.
