Getting rid of Chevron puts the entire environment at risk. Now any case of a corporation spewing out any sort of toxic crap anywhere doesn’t end up getting halted by the EPA, it gets put in front of a judge. And believe me, it will only take a few of those before we get to “corporations are presidents, my friend” in terms of what they can legally get away with.

Meet Mercy and Anita – the African workers driving the AI revolution, for just over a dollar an hour (www.theguardian.com)

Mercy craned forward, took a deep breath and loaded another task on her computer. One after another, disturbing images and videos appeared on her screen. As a Meta content moderator working at an outsourced office in Nairobi, Mercy was expected to action one “ticket” every 55 seconds during her 10-hour shift. This particular...

I honestly don’t know the solution to this beyond, obviously, pay these people more. Because if you don’t train an AI to go through this sick shit and get rid of it, you need to get people to do it. The only other option is to just leave it up and I don’t think that’s a good option.

AI sucks for a lot of applications and I’m sure it will not be effective enough in this instance to go without any humans involved in the process entirely, but if we don’t try to get humans out of this process, we’re forcing people to look at murders and child porn to get rid of it.

Which, of course, ignores the fact that there are likely multiple people from various races, ethnicities, genders and other identities which are all about equally qualified and getting a black woman in an administration run by a white man could bring needed perspective.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That’s what it always has meant. It threatens the heteronormative Christian patriarchal power structure to have anyone but a white man in charge of anything. And it doesn’t matter that a woman is saying it because it’s a woman who doesn’t understand that the leopards will eat her face too.

  1. Americans never voted Trump into office because he has never won the popular vote. He got into office in 2016 due to the archaic Electoral College system.

Some of it. I don’t know that even a sizable portion of this country wants to raise prescription drug prices. I also think a very small percentage wants to get rid of no fault divorce or contraception. Even most Catholics are fine with contraception. And use it too.

Raising the retirement age? I’d guess that their sizable voting bloc in their 60s wouldn’t be good with that.

Honestly, I think the more people learn about this, the more they will find things they don’t like about it. Even Republicans.

JPMorgan Chase warns 86 million customers they might have to start paying for their bank accounts (finance.yahoo.com)

The potential charges, says Marianne Lake, CEO of consumer and community banking at JPMorgan, are a result of new regulatory rules that cap overdraft and late fees. $15 a month for a bank account is less than 1 hour’s work at Canada’s minimum wage. That’s more than two hours’ worth of work at US minimum wage.

Not ridiculously expensive all things considered, but still worth noting how much a poor person would have to work just to maintain a bank account at that rate in the U.S.

Leaving the ammo out on a shelf outside a 7-11 is not the same as keeping it inside a vending machine outside a 7-11.

Despite war and sanctions, Russia becomes a high-income economy (economictimes.indiatimes.com)

Despite sanctions by Western countries against Russia due to the Ukraine war, the country has become a high-income economy from an upper-middle income economy. In its latest rankings, the World Bank has promoted the Russian economy to the top income category.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The latter two are clearly better sources, which makes me wonder why you didn’t use them.

Hmm… maybe it was because this was in the NPR one?

Russia is paid by receiving revenues from China, India, Turkey and other buyers of Russian oil products and a big part is so-called non-oil-and-gas income which economy produce itself.

Maybe also this part?

So that’s why we’re talking that Russian economy is now operating on its maximum capacity. And I don’t see any signs how it can grow faster. And when we are looking at this bright figures, about 3% of GDP growth or this super low unemployment rate, we need always keep in mind what there is behind. And behind is Vladimir Putin impossible trilemma for 2024, because he will need to fund the ongoing war against Ukraine, maintain the facade of business as usual for population and safeguarding the macroeconomic stability, which is quite complicated because Russia abandoned lots of institutions like budgetary rule or predictable tax system. So the situation looks solid, but it’s very fragile.

Is it that you didn’t think I’d read them or is it because you didn’t read them yourself?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Biden did not force Putin to invade Ukraine. No one forced him to do it. In fact, Russia explicitly pledged not to do so in exchange for Ukraine’s nuclear weapons.

“They wanted Ukraine to join NATO” is not an excuse to break that pledge, nor is it an excuse to invade Ukraine and annex part of it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Once again, you either didn’t read your link or you didn’t think I would:

Those documents provided that Ukraine would transfer all strategic warheads on its territory to Russia for elimination and, in return, would receive security assurances, compensation for the commercial value of the HEU, and Nunn-Lugar assistance to help with the disposal of ICBMs, ICBM silos, bombers and other infrastructure on Ukrainian territory. Perhaps as importantly but less tangibly, the Trilateral Statement removed what would have been a major impediment to Ukraine’s development of normal relations with the United States and the West.

What ‘security assurances’ do you think they were talking about?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Please quote my saying it was a lie. It should be easy for you to find.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, so I didn’t say it’s a lie, you just think that’s what I implied. Of course, you could have asked me what I meant rather than just assumed you knew.

I assumed nothing. What I said was this:

But I think calling her a racist for what she did when she could be Muslim herself is going a bit too far.

Lying about what I said in order to continue to berate me is not a good way to go about doing things and I do not advise you either lie or call me a bigot again unless you wish to take a long break from this community. Rule 5 in the sidebar is very clear:

Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect!

You are engaging with neither good faith nor respect. And you will have one more opportunity to do so.

Incidentally, I literally talked about Iranian Armenian Christians in another comment, making your lie an extremely silly one.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

True. It’s assuming you can’t know someone’s religion unless they let you know what it is.

Unlike you, I do not define people for them. I let them define themselves.

You have no problem declaring this woman isn’t a Muslim even though she’s never told you her religion. I wonder if you feel the same way about people and their gender? Would declare about someone whose gender you didn’t know what their gender was based on a news article?

I sure wouldn’t.

And again, I notice you haven’t said anything to the misogynists including the racist who does think Iranians are Muslims. And Arabs.

I do like how you accused me of believing all Iranians are Muslims and when I point out that I was talking about Armenian Christians from Iran, you pretended you never made that accusation. So it’s very amusing that you say you stand by such a silly lie.

I do appreciate your returning to civility, however. Thank you.

I am not worried about their environmental impact, but I hate seeing my dog spending the evening shaking because of the explosions. Even sedatives aren’t enough. If you could have fireworks without the big booms, I wouldn’t care, but the big booms scare the shit out of a lot of animals.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Mine did a little better this year because instead of trying a prescribed sedative, the vet suggested we try catnip because (I never knew this before) it has a calming and sedating effect on dogs and it’s safe for them. We tested it first because apparently it doesn’t work on all dogs, but at least that time only the big fireworks scared her and she was able to be okay through the little ones. But she was still shaking and panting a lot. I was just glad she was able to go to sleep after the big ones ended.

I’m not a vet, so don’t just take my word for this obviously, but I thought I’d put that out there in case anyone wanted to ask their vet about it. I did some research after they recommended it and (I have a good vet, but you never know) it seems like there’s no health issue if you use it in moderation.

Edit: Our dog is 60 pounds and the vet suggested a half a teaspoon sprinkled in her food.

Cool. Enjoy your hail corporate lifestyle. Hope that works out for you. I’m sure you’ll never get overcharged by any corporation when it turns out you didn’t have to be. And if that does happen, I’m sure you’ll berate yourself for lacking the intelligence to not be cheated. Because you feel the same way about yourself than you do about a stranger on the internet you know you can get away with berating since you’re not in the same room.
