Middle school is utter shit. Kids are awful to each other as much as they are to their teachers. We literally had to pull our daughter out of her public middle school and put her in a (thankfully also public) online school because she was bullied to the point that she was having thoughts of self-harm. And she hadn’t even let most kids know she was queer yet. She just dared to do things like wear spiked collars, which apparently made her a furry. I don’t even want to know what would have happened when the school decided she was a queer furry.

Corporations are people until a crime is committed, at which point you can’t punish a corporation for a crime a person commits.

I don’t understand it, but apparently that’s how it works.

It’s always too soon to talk about guns after a mass shooting and there’s always mass shootings. It works out well for the NRA.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Why does the type of gun violence matter? Why does it matter whether or not they know the victims?

I don’t understand the relevance to the gun control discussion.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

None of those things have anything to do with the type of violence or whether or not they know the victims.

So that really doesn’t explain anything.

This was not about whether or not a gun control discussion is worth having. This is about the relevance of the type of gun violence and whether or not the murderer and the victim new each other. What difference does it make?

I’m guessing the author of the article didn’t get to choose where the ad went in, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the ad was inserted automatically without anyone reviewing what went there.

That’s not about the state of journalism, that’s about what companies are willing to let advertisers get away with.

There are many reasons to criticize what is going on in American journalism, but this is not a very good one.

My favorite excuse for not paying fast food workers more is, “that’s not supposed to be someone’s permanent job, that’s supposed to be a teenager’s job.”

Great, but we don’t live in your supposed to world and it is a permanent job for a lot of people now.

Also, the idea that you shouldn’t pay a teenager a decent hourly wage either is pretty offensive, but that’s a whole other issue.

Trump's Camp Says It Has Nothing to Do With Project 2025 Manifesto -- Aside From Writing It (theintercept.com)

The Trump campaign attempted to distance itself from the conservative Project 2025 playbook on Friday. Despite significant overlap between Project 2025 personnel and staffers from former president Donald Trump’s administration and campaign, Trump issued a statement saying he had “no idea who is behind” the project....

They have no imagination when it comes to cheating in the Tour de France these days. Now, it’s all performance enhancing drugs. But back in the good old days-

“They would trail a thin piece of wire right behind a motor car, which, at one end, had a cork fixed on to the end of it,” Cossins explains. “And the rider would wedge the cork between his teeth. And then get towed along with this thing, this wire, pulling him along.”

Getting rid of Chevron puts the entire environment at risk. Now any case of a corporation spewing out any sort of toxic crap anywhere doesn’t end up getting halted by the EPA, it gets put in front of a judge. And believe me, it will only take a few of those before we get to “corporations are presidents, my friend” in terms of what they can legally get away with.

JPMorgan Chase warns 86 million customers they might have to start paying for their bank accounts (finance.yahoo.com)

The potential charges, says Marianne Lake, CEO of consumer and community banking at JPMorgan, are a result of new regulatory rules that cap overdraft and late fees. Lake says Chase will be passing along those increased expenses to customers, which would put an end to now-free services such as checking accounts and wealth...

I am not worried about their environmental impact, but I hate seeing my dog spending the evening shaking because of the explosions. Even sedatives aren’t enough. If you could have fireworks without the big booms, I wouldn’t care, but the big booms scare the shit out of a lot of animals.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Mine did a little better this year because instead of trying a prescribed sedative, the vet suggested we try catnip because (I never knew this before) it has a calming and sedating effect on dogs and it’s safe for them. We tested it first because apparently it doesn’t work on all dogs, but at least that time only the big fireworks scared her and she was able to be okay through the little ones. But she was still shaking and panting a lot. I was just glad she was able to go to sleep after the big ones ended.

I’m not a vet, so don’t just take my word for this obviously, but I thought I’d put that out there in case anyone wanted to ask their vet about it. I did some research after they recommended it and (I have a good vet, but you never know) it seems like there’s no health issue if you use it in moderation.

Edit: Our dog is 60 pounds and the vet suggested a half a teaspoon sprinkled in her food.

I don’t enjoy it, I just don’t see why I should accept that Domino’s is doing something that it’s okay to do.

I understand that you think it’s acceptable for Domino’s to have a two-tier pricing system depending on how smart you are. I don’t. I can’t help not being smart no matter how much you think I can.
