Is this like some ex-Catholic atheists I’ve met who try to find a way to get the Catholic Church to excommunicate them?

Because it seems like it would be just as big a waste of time even if you could do it, which you can’t.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You know what would be really stupid? If Texas had a bunch of power companies that didn’t work together or connect to the national grid.

But that would be so incredibly stupid that I’m sure that’s not the current situation at all.

What a headline. And then it turns out that’s exactly the right headline. What a world.

How dare she not view the world in stark black-and-white terms!

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

This, to me, is less important than the fact that this woman is publicly talking about how someone can do a bad thing but still be a public good, something not talked about enough in a world where when someone does something bad, it makes people ignore everything else they’re doing.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I dealt with that as a kid with Roald Dahl because he was super antisemitic, but he also wrote amazing children’s books. I guess for me it depends on how much they put such ugliness into their work. Lovecraft, creative as he was, had no problem being racist in his writings and I just can’t read them even though I love the mythos. Dahl didn’t do that.

Card and Rowling are somewhat different cases because they didn’t start by writing terrible things, but they got to the point that their ugly beliefs began to seep into their books.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I was with you until you called her misguided. She is way beyond misguided at this point. She’s gotten so hateful that even Elon Musk told her to tone down the anti-trans bigotry.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I wouldn’t substitute any word in that case because there is absolutely no excusing her at this point. Her actions are indefensible. Love her books, fine, but she is a horrible, horrible person and her bigotry does not deserve to be excused by calling it misguided or anything else but bigotry. If she said about black people what she says about trans people, that wouldn’t even be a consideration in terms of talking about her.

Brazil apologises after three diplomats’ Black teenagers searched at gunpoint (www.theguardian.com)

Brazil’s ministry of foreign affairs has been forced to apologise to the embassies of Canada, Gabon and Burkina Faso after three diplomats’ teenage children – all of whom are Black – were searched at gunpoint by police officers....

FlyingSquid ,

Fun facts time!

Brazil enslaved more people from Africa than any other country; nearly 5 million kidnapped Africans disembarked in Brazil, more than 12 times the number taken to mainland North America, according to estimates from the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade database. Brazil was the last country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery, in 1888.

Discrimination remains, and Black and biracial Brazilians are more likely to be poor, imprisoned and die violently. Fewer than a third of managerial positions are held by those groups, and they comprise one quarter of representatives in Brazil’s Lower House of Congress.

Hawaii governor says Biden could decide within days whether to remain in the presidential race (apnews.com)

President Joe Biden could make a decision within days whether to remain a candidate for reelection, said Hawaii’s governor who participated in a recent meeting with Biden and other Democratic governors and whose family has known the president for years....

FlyingSquid , (edited )
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And if Biden decides not to run, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green told The Associated Press on Saturday that he believes the president will designate Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him on the ticket.

If that happens, prepare to see the narrative of certain people switch from “no one should vote for Genocide Joe” to “no one should vote for pro-cop Harris.” Anything but tell people to stop the dictator from gaining power.

Edit: Wow, that didn’t take long.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly, but that doesn’t seem to be an argument they care about.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Not good enough. You have to vote for the person most likely to beat him. It’s a numbers game.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Who has a chance of beating Trump that is also willing to run?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

If you don’t have an answer to stopping Trump and other people do but you’re telling them not to do it, thanks for proving my point.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Fine. Then who? Who has a chance of beating Trump that is also willing to run?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, but what about letting the perfect be the enemy of the good?!

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Which ones and do they want to run?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

What makes you think any of them want to run for president when they didn’t even take part in the primaries?

Also, why do you assume Sanders would do it when asked? He’s 82. He’s a lot sharper than Biden, but he’s still 82. His energy is going to be limited. I would be very surprised if he even sought re-election to the Senate at this point. He probably wants to spend his last years with his grandkids in Vermont (or wherever they live), not arguing with people in D.C. And I’d say he deserves that happy end to his life rather than spend what may be his last four years dealing with a bunch of hostile bullshit.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not worried about Republicans. I’m worried about the people below who have already decided “don’t vote for Harris” before she’s even nominated. No candidate will be good enough for them because no candidate could ever pass the purity test. It could be a Bernie Sanders/AOC ticket and they’d find a reason to say you shouldn’t vote for them.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sure Netanyahu considers that a success.

@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Even if that’s true, fetish gear does not equal furry.

But also, she wears things like Ramones and Dickies shirts. I’m not sure if that counts as elaborate enough?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure why any of that justifies paying them less than an abled person would for doing the same job.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That’s not how minimum wage is supposed to work. It’s a minimum for a reason. It doesn’t matter how much work you actually do.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I have yet to work a job where I didn’t have tons of down time. I still got paid more than minimum wage for all of them.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

An incredible privilege? That was true when I worked fast food jobs. Sometimes it was dead.

And I said nothing about a raise, I said a minimum wage, and I sure don’t think that there should be a “you aren’t working hard enough” requirement to get the completely non-survivable wage of $7.25 an hour.

And you’re not going to be able to convince me that Goodwill can’t just afford to pay them that rate anyway. They just don’t because they don’t have to.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Well this is the first time anyone has ever suggested I was privileged for having a minimum wage fast food job where sometimes customers didn’t come in so we didn’t have to work for a while.

You have a very strange idea of privilege if you think you can be privileged to have a job that doesn’t pay a livable wage. Or a fast food job at all.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I have literally never heard anyone call a fast food job privileged before just because sometimes there’s downtime. That’s the weirdest claim I have ever heard.

Those people took those jobs because the pay structure & work requirements suit their needs.

Cool, so we better not pay them more money because giving the disabled more money to spend would be bad for some reason.

Really, paying them what anyone non-disabled would have to legally be paid for the exact same job would just be an insult to them. I know I get insulted every time I get paid more money at my very privileged jobs that you are certain I have had.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I asked my question. You aren’t answering it.

I will repeat it:

Why does the type of gun violence matter? Why does it matter whether or not they know the victims?

I don’t understand the relevance to the gun control discussion.

You have made your opinion that there should be absolutely no discussion of gun control known many times, so maybe you weren’t the person I wanted an answer from. Especially when you weren’t the one I asked.

Take your agenda elsewhere.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

But isn’t the source of the problem the same for both? Or do you mean that people consuming the news just don’t sympathize with murders when it’s a gang war?

I’m not trying to be argumentative, just trying to understand this because it gets brought up a lot when mass shootings happen and I guess to me, murder is murder.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Then it’s weird that pretty much all the countries with high homicide rates, the U.S. included, tend to have legal guns and the ones with low homicide rates tend not to.

en.wikipedia.org/…/List_of_countries_by_intention…

You would think there would be some sort of link.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Got it. Thanks.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

No. No you didn’t. I also didn’t ask you and I don’t want your opinion because I know what your opinion is already.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

But that doesn’t reflect on the content of the story itself. Shouldn’t that be what really matters?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

So you’re criticizing the sad state of journalism without evaluating the actual journalism?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Not according to any dictionary I’ve ever seen.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/0702568c-d663-4dbb-a096-d2430c879afc.png

That’s like saying newspaper classified ads are journalism.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The ad part? No.

Hence it saying “writing for newspapers” not just newspapers.

Again, based on your claim, classified ads are journalism. Absolutely no one but you would even suggest such nonsense.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Better than what we have now. Unless you think the corporatist courts will even end up ruling in favor of the plaintiffs.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

How can you trust whatever you search for after the glue on pizza thing?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Then why does it matter what people feel strongly about as opposed to what the reality is?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

When it comes to DEI, I’m not against any people or class of people, but it’d be intellectually dishonest to not recognize the inherent conflict here when you start considering people’s race as an admittance factor.

…ignoring the fact that for over a century, whiteness has been the easiest way to get a job when there’s an equally qualified black person.

That is even true now.

Head of group responsible for Project 2025 threatens violence if people challenge their "revolution" (www.salon.com)

“And so I come full circle on this response and just want to encourage you with some substance that we are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be,” he said.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure why you think the need to work and pay bills isn’t a legitimate reason to not do other things. You have to eat to live and living is a lot harder without a home. Or with a home but without services like running water.

My uncle used to live there. I’ve never been, but I’m guessing the lack of much ever happening was why.

OpenAI was hacked, revealing internal secrets and raising national security concerns — year-old breach wasn't reported to the public (www.tomshardware.com)

A hacker breached OpenAI’s internal messaging systems early last year, stealing details of how OpenAI’s technologies work from employees. Although the hacker did not access the systems housing key AI technologies, the incident raised significant security concerns within the company. Furthermore, it even raised concerns about...
