Too stupid to know what they’re going to face or really desperate to leave Cuba?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It’s amazing how many of these people want to get out of being parents.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

As an American, we don’t know either because this SovCit stuff is all gibberish. They believe in magic words.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Germany’s going to regret that if Putin decides he can start marching through Poland.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I sincerely hope you are correct in this because this sort of funding cut, if it is what it sounds like and not your explanation, is absolutely the last thing Ukraine needs right now.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, well, I’m relieved now. Everyone knows that the U.S. has never made incorrect assessments, let alone intentionally incorrect ones.

Camelcamelcamel.com kind of sucks in terms of their search, but they will find you the best price for things on Amazon.

The dude is just lucky that prison windows have bars on them.

“This is basically what we were all worried about with Y2K, except it’s actually happened this time.”

What people were worried about with Y2K was nuclear weapons being launched and planes falling out of the sky. And it was nonsense, but bad things could have happened.

The good part is that the harm was mitigated for the most part through due diligence of IT workers.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, but even the worst Y2K effects wouldn’t have had what lots of people were worried about, which was basically the apocalypse.

People who really should have known better were telling me that Y2K would launch the missiles in the silos.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I wonder if there would be any way to work it so that a dry concept like that could be made into a decent movie based on the actual events. They did it for Tetris.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I never said it was nonsense. I said what a lot of people were worried about was nonsense- stuff like it causing nuclear armageddon or crashing the global economy.

And this event today isn’t even what IT professionals were worried about. This is a big headache for them and a day off for a lot of other people. It’s not going to do the damage Y2K would have done had people not done enough.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Are you really going to claim that we would have had a global thermonuclear armageddon if Y2K mitigation was a failure?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I literally said in my first comment:

The good part is that the harm was mitigated for the most part through due diligence of IT workers.

What more should I have said?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Well you’re welcome to think that, but that wasn’t what I was talking about. I was talking about what people were actually worried about rather than what the person claimed people were worried about.

I literally quoted what I was responding to, so I have no idea why you’re taking that away from what I said that I was suggesting Y2K wasn’t a big deal when I wasn’t even discussing the reality of the situation.

Yesterday in Kroger (a supermarket for you non-Americans) I saw a bunch of cans of potato salad. Why would someone buy canned potato salad? (lemmy.world)

Even if you don’t want to make it, I’ve never been in a supermarket that doesn’t offer a fresher option. I’ve even been in gas stations that offer what they at least claim is fresh potato salad....

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You mean it doesn’t taste like German potato salad? Because then it’s not as advertised.

Also, if the potatoes are still firm in that can and not near-blended potato soup mush, they are using some weird-ass chemicals you probably don’t want in your body.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

If society collapses and all we have left to eat is canned potato salad, I’m leaving the fallout shelter.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Dry ramen is a whole thing. I can see the appeal of it as a weird form of crunchy snack, But you have stuff like this:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/6d3aa782-aa50-4818-b49e-d07a04c91a5c.png

And I admit, I really don’t get it.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The fact that the store here keeps restocking it means someone must think it’s good enough to keep buying it lol

I agree. I just don’t know who that someone is when they can buy it fresh in the deli in the same store. But then some people obviously prefer Treet to Spam.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Bad news: you get to be one of the Khans.

(Fallout stopped with 2. I will fight you if you say otherwise.)

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I could definitely see something like that, although I think you’d probably get something that tasted better with a blended potato soup and there’s a bunch of canned varieties. I suppose if someone like that is jonesing for some potato salad (I wouldn’t blame them, potato salad is great), this is the best way to give it to them.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The show had a lot more to do with the first two games than I expected. Shady Sands and the New California Republic are from them.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Fresh German potato salad doesn’t use mayo either. And it’s fresh.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Haha, sadly still not eating, but I can still appreciate (or not appreciate) the concepts.

Tasty food to me is often something from India or China… really almost anywhere in Asia. But dry ramen isn’t really a thing in Japan, is it?

Who’s going to try and risk getting sunk by a drone or a missile?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

There are certain people on Lemmy who support the Houthis because they claim what they are doing supports Gaza. It does not. They aren’t stopping Israel from doing anything by doing this… but there are people here who have this ridiculous “enemy of my enemy is my friend regardless of what they actually accomplish or what their real goals are” attitude which baffles me. The Houthis are awful. They have killed a huge number of people, including children, just like Israel. But hey, they’re declared enemies of Israel, so we can just overlook that little issue.

I’ve seen people even praise theocracies like Iran for the same reason.

It’s ridiculous.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Britain and the U.S. are still trading with Israel and now they hit a Russian ship. How does this help Gaza at all?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think it was absolutely necessary since you already clarified in your reply, but it was probably a good idea anyway.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I stand by the joke. Mostly. I could have found a better song.

Appeals court halts return of net neutrality | The Sixth Circuit’s temporary stay comes only weeks after the Supreme Court overturned Chevron deference, weakening the FCC (www.theverge.com)

A federal appeals court has agreed to halt the reinstatement of net neutrality rules until August 5th, while the court considers whether more permanent action is justified....

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The day that Chevron was struck down, a bunch of people here on Lemmy told me it was a good idea to leave these things up to the courts from now on.

And now here we are.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The funny thing was that SCOTUS decided that Trump could commit any crimes he wanted if they were an “official presidential act” a few days later. I wish I could remember the usernames of the people who were arguing that with me so I could have asked them what they thought about Chevron after that happened. And now this.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Or China will break off that relationship in favor of a more lucrative one with India, especially since they share a hatred of Muslims.

Also, he hates drag queens. Don’t you dare suggest anything.

FlyingSquid ,

Really? I grew up there. Seriously. Born in Bloomington Hospital, went to BDLC, then Bloomington Montessori, then Batchelor Middle School, then BHS South (graduated in '95), then IU (dropped out because I’m a dummy). My mom still lives there, as do a ton of my friends.

It is definitely more queer friendly than a lot of towns, but you go over to the west side of town, a place like Highland Village, and you walk down the street holding hands with your boyfriend, you’ll probably still get harassed at the very least.

There’s still a ton of redneck townies there.

That said, I have the misfortune of living in Terre Haute and we’re planning to retire in Bloomington (unless Trump wins, in which case we’re using my dual citizenship to get the fuck out of here) and my daughter is queer, so I’m glad we’ll be retiring in a place where she can basically feel safe.

What floors me is that Terre Haute got a Pride Center and had its first Pride celebration after fucking Spencer.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Please don’t tell me you are in Chillicothe, because I was there for a while too. (And North Hollywood rather than West, which is on the other side of a mountain range).

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Chillicothe sucked too. One bar and it was all country music and cowboy hats. Dudes, you’re in fucking Ohio.
