Largest housing provider for migrant children engaged in pervasive sexual abuse, US says (apnews.com)

Employees of the largest housing provider for unaccompanied migrant children in the U.S. repeatedly sexually abused and harassed children in their care for at least eight years, the Justice Department said Thursday, alleging a shocking litany of offenses that took place as the company amassed billions of dollars in government...

So you mean it’s not “just the flu” like the antivaxxers have told me so often? (Ignoring the fact that the 1918 flu killed between 20 and 50 million people.)

The people here praising the Houthis seem to think they knew who they were attacking rather than just seeing a ship pass by and attacking it, which is what they actually do.

I don’t know if Brooke was fucking the black guy’s son. I mean, I don’t have double standards. I mean, I am a racist, to a point, fucking n****s. But then when it comes to nice people and shit, and whatever. I guess we’re all a little racist. Fucking n*****.

– Hulk Hogan, who was taken out of the Wrestling Hall of Fame for three whole years after he was recorded saying that.

And then Peter Thiel, pissed that Gawker outed him, bankrolled Hogan’s lawsuit which took them down. I remember lots of people on Reddit regarded it as a victory because Gawker sucked, which it did. They didn’t care that a billionaire found a way to destroy a media outlet that told people something about him that he didn’t want them to know.

Peter Thiel is, of course, also a big Republican supporter.

Good. Now I have no reason to feel bad about laughing at the Undertaker when the Sci-Fi channel, for some reason, had him host a movie night, called “The Undertaker’s Theater of Doom” and he pronounced it “thee-ayter.”

One social media post, by a user described as a “MAGA2024 Ex-con deplorable” and viewed 10m times, shows a male officer carrying a large gun next to a female agent in action at the Trump rally.

Its caption says: “Secret service agents: Before DEI vs After DEI.”

As the article says, the first female agent was appointed in 1970.

Someone tell me who the woke liberal pro-DEI president was back in 1970 because Republicans must really hate him.

My wife only got it a little firsthand because her family is evangelical, but her mother is one of the kindest, most accepting, most tolerant people I’ve ever met. Despite that, and despite being an atheist since she was a teenager, she still has dreams about going to hell in her mid-40s.

From the article before the paywall:

Between 2012 and 2021 foreign firms increased their collective Chinese research personnel by a fifth, to 716,000. Their annual R&D spending in the country almost doubled, to 338bn yuan ($52bn). Add investments by local firms and China now matches Europe’s R&D tally (see chart). Only America splurges more.

So it sounds like it kind of is.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I think that quibbling over an a/the issue when the article in general doesn’t really take that into consideration (journalists generally don’t write headlines, editors do) is not the best way to approach this subject.

I think the article itself is pretty good.

Again- authors of articles generally do not write headlines. Editors do, just like editors have control over the artwork on the front cover of a book. You are judging a book by its cover. That’s why you read the blurb on the back and find out that Bigfoot isn’t actually in The Fellowship of the Ring.

Art as a service can also spread propaganda. Something North Korea knows all too well, as did Nazi Germany.

Make no mistake, I do not want any restrictions on artists and I am a big believer in public arts funding, but I’m under no illusions that the right government can twist that sort of thing for their own use.

once deeply skeptical of Donald J. Trump

Utter nonsense. This is him being “deeply skeptical” of Trump according to the article:

Days before the 2016 election, he told CNBC that Mr. Trump did not “seem to have the sort of character that reflects well on the United States.” After Mr. Trump won, Mr. Musk told some associates that the outcome was proof that they were living in a simulation, according to one person close to him. In 2020, Mr. Musk, in a private conversation with another associate, called Mr. Trump a “stone-cold loser.”

Please be rentboy… Please be rentboy… Please be rentboy…

Damn it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Rent boy, or rentboy, is a term that is used to describe a particular type of male prostitute. It refers primarily to young men (although its use extends to male prostitutes of all ages) who have sex with men. The term originated in Great Britain, Ireland, and New Zealand and originally was applied to a male prostitute who was both young and working-class. Middle-class and upper-class male prostitutes more commonly would have been called escorts, and older male prostitutes would have been referred to as hustlers. The rent boy was almost exclusively a street worker who charged low rates for his service. Although the term retains its original meaning, it has gained a certain cachet within the sex-worker community and sometimes is appropriated by higher-end male prostitutes who wish to provide a rough trade fantasy to their clients.

The most famous use of the word was by Thomas Swinscow, who admitted in 1895 to having worked as a rent boy in a London male brothel. The subsequent investigation, called the Cleveland Street Scandal, implicated high-ranking officials. Rumors circulated for decades that the prince of Wales was involved in the scandal, and records released in 1975 confirmed that, although they did not conclude that he was a patron of the brothel. The public outcry over the scandal was partly responsible for the prosecution of Oscar Wilde that year on charges of gross indecency. Victorian morality could not accommodate the existence of rentboys, and rejection of the practice led to a general increase in homophobia.

No problem, it’s one of my favorite Monty Python factoids.

For what it’s worth, the Norwegians have since made up for this issue by making a really funny TV show. And doing it in both Norwegian and English versions, which must have been an extra challenge since so much of comedy is about language and it would have been the second language for most, if not all of the people involved.
