Low earth orbit- they burn up on reentry when they destabilize

This was (probably) the biggest reason they pushed so hard to create a re-usable rocket system. That shit gets expensive to replace.

Exusia , (edited )
@Exusia@lemmy.world avatar

Earth’s gravity is pulling them in Atmospheric drag is slowing them down, the ISS, which is farther away, has thrusters to correct its course from earths pull. While working, they use thrusters to correct themselves to stay in orbit. These are much closer and once they’re non-functioning they won’t be able to keep themselves from falling (“orbital decay”)

The satellite burning up on re-entry is part of what makes starlink such an expensive proposition. SpaceX can’t fix them, they can’t re-use solar panels or wiring harnesses. No part of the shell or shielding. It’s all just…gone.

How the 'parental rights' movement gave rise to the 1 Million March 4 Children (theconversation.com)

Thousands of protesters and counter-protesters in cities across Canada have clashed over the rights of trans children and youth. The “1 Million March 4 Children” on Sept. 20 is part of a widespread and growing “parental rights” movement targeting inclusive public education....

@Exusia@lemmy.world avatar

Tangentially related to the article, a common voice in the US is “its Parents jobs to teach their kids X Y and Z!”

But they fucking aren’t. A fantastic example is sexed. Explaining sex is so awkward for parents and kids alike that most kids don’t ever get “the talk” in any meaningful capacity. They get taught whatever their parents manage to say while being embarrassed about the subject. Positions and safety they got comfortable with. If dad was the fuckboy who never wore a condom (like how you wind up with kids as an inexperienced parent in the first place), how can he be expected to teach his kid how to use one properly? He won’t. He’ll say some biased shit like “real men don’t wear condoms” and then that’s just fact in the kids eyes. Mom not being much better, not properly explaining post-sex cleanup and self-care. These are of course hypotheticals, but they’ve been real enough problems an argument was made for schools to teach it because it wasn’t getting done at home.

Kids aren’t being taught how to not be slobs when they eat, a friend dated a Mexican woman with a kid and she got mad he was “teaching her son to be white” with basic table manners - shit like elbows and phones off the table and using a fork over his hands (the kid was 7, well at the age of these things). She was so intolerant of him helping raise her son as an equal half of a whole relationship. Handing him oreos 20 minutes before bed as a “reward for brushing his teeth”

Kids screen habits have gone wild. Parents letting ipads and TVs raise their kids when they’re too busy (thisnone beginning with millenials at the earliest). This is of course a side effect of parents being so busy just to pay bills issues in the US. If you work 3 jobs how CAN you be expected to have time for a kid? “Just make it work” I guess.

Kids spend more time inside than ever, this is cool and all, but when they develop zero social skills it will hurt them in the long run. I would know, I was the indoors kid on my PS2.

None of these are new or unique to GenZ but rather the latest manifestation of these issues. Parents failures is an ongoing generational issue, for certain, but parents lining up to get upset at a school because they didn’t do their job as a parent, is the ultimate shitty parent thing to do. Sorry, not sorry.

My parents missed a lot of things and that’s what school and friends were for. Gutting these systems only hurts us all.

Exusia , (edited )
@Exusia@lemmy.world avatar

You want kids to do things in polite company without being prompted. Good table manners are a foundation of that.

I realize it’s anecdotal, but I go out of my way to not patronize businesses on federal holidays.

If it wasn’t profitable they’d be closed. I’ve been the guy working a holiday and hearing “oh its such a shame your open”. Fuck you Mr. Jergeson, you standing here proved some fucking bean counter right - you’re here spending money justifying the store being open.

For those with larger phones, how do you handle them without grip accessories?

Do you cave and use both hands? Do you take the chance and try to use them one-handed when more actively using them? Or do you ultimately submit and get an accessory to kinda help, at least with keeping a hold of them?...

Galaxy fold is a 2 hand phone.

I just always use two hands for typing though. Did on the Pixel 2xl before it as well. Pop sockets/ rings seem kinda silly to me but it’s whatever people find comfortable.

Even closed, the top of the screen I’d a reach with the thumb, with the pinky supporting the bottom. Opened full size I have to rotate the phone to get my thumb to the top if I need to swipe down. Otherwise it’s just a 2 handed affair.

Games consoles are infuriatingly exempt from California's otherwise important new right to repair bill (www.pcgamer.com)

Why yes! My product the Google iPixel ZFold 15 is a gaming console! You would think it’s a phone because of the calling and phone-like features however it is exempt from right-to-repair because it plays Genshin with more fraps than any other gizmo and doohicky in anyone’s pocket in this hemisphere!

And you would be remiss to assume my Grapple ThinkPad 2025 is a mere laptop! Nay! A gaming console it is! It can’t even run the Chrome Dinosaur for 35 seconds without running out of RAM and is really built for content creation and the school setting in mind, but it is absolutely built for gaming and also omitted from right-to-repair!!

I got my fold because I was tired of incremental upgrades that didn’t make my phone feel any different than the last years phone (moved from Pixel 2 to pixel 3 right prices dropped when as pixel 6 launched). Sure it was faster but it didn’t feel any faster than when the old phone was new. The screen was the same size, it felt the same speed, why even spend the money? I wouldn’t pitch that anyone needs a foldable, but by that comparison noone “needs” a $1600 ultra/pro phone when base models are $800-900, but people do anyway. As long as I can afford the upgrade every 3 years, I will get the new one. when the screen finally gives.

Why is everyone so giddy about the flooding thay happened at burning man?

Social media seems to be laughing its ass off about this tragedy, is it because the folks at burning man are perceived as frivolous hippies or something? I dislike stupid shit that wealthy people do. People generally also do not sympathize with a nameless faceless entity. “70k people” is not something I can personally relate to. (As opposed to headlines like “kid with cancer” that normally gets sympathy.)

Additionally, there was all the warning signs this festival was going to be a disaster and people spent thousands of dollars on tickets anyway. Much like the submarine these people have to have someone come help them, which yet again, takes for the form of state resources. Once again, the American taxpayer is footing the bill helping save rich people of all ages from their own hubris.

If I’m understanding right, you can buy “twitter.sucks” for $200 and you own that, regardless of who owns .sucks as a TLD? Or is it a rental? You can separately purchase ALL “.sucks” for 185k? What happens if the owner of .sucks dies or goes to prison, do you also lose “twitter.sucks”?

“Least buggy” lmao. So it’s still riddled with bugs then?

I’m glad to know that in 2023 you can have Elden Ring and Starfield cost the same budget, and will ask the same store shelf price. One of these is hailed as the “Least buggy” game the studio has ever managed to squirt out after selling the same fucking game 9 times in TWELVE YEARS. Its competition is celebrated for being a market leader for “you die in 3 hits lol”. (And also lore in their games but that’s beside the point)

I dont want starfield to fail, I want Bethesda to un-assfuck itself now that they’re not run by Howard and make a great game worth the money. Zenimax has no reason to turn this game into Skyrim in Space unless Microsoft says to.

The most deliscious thing (and worrying if I’m being honest) about all of this is that his biggest cheerleader, Magic The Gathering Majorie, is a representative of Georgia. Either this all happens under her watch and she’s powerless to “take the heat off a guy” or she will pull every favor she can in her own state to reduce anything she can for him.

I forsee not only there to be many hiccups, but maybe even Watergate type charges for her office for meddling with the courthouse itself to try and fuck with the system. I would like to be wrong but this is a case that brings, perhaps not the actual charge but the spirit of, treasonous behavior. Anyone willing to end the democratic way of doing things for a dictator, will absolutely come to bat if it fails to try again.

I dont want to read the article, what…uhh…what’s the solution? And is it coming (will they sell it to) to other phones too?

Edit: read the article and there’s no mention of it. Just talks about the ram of it, as if phones were short RAM these days.

higher wages for the servers... by the customers. Fnbs (lemmy.world)

Went to a restaurant in LA today and when I got the check I noticed that it was a bit higher than it should be. Then I noticed this 18% service charge. @Exusia@lemmy.world avatar

Found it by the “helens shazzy” www.jonandvinnys.com/menu I don’t live in LA so everything I see is based solely on the website. I read zero google reviews.l and just dove right in. TLdr -op you got finessed. Stop eating here my guy.

It seems by their website that fee is ONLY mentioned on the wine page (also based on this receipt and op statement, this fee is EXCLUSIVE to wine buyers for some reason) where they also charge a $50 corkage fee (most normal restaurants are 20-40), and also stock rotates “so frequently we can’t maintain an updated list” which seems silly, but maybe stock at all 3 locations changes often enough that this really would would be a pain. The restaurant itself is…all over the place. Italian, and breakfast foods? But also there’s Helen’s Winery attached? And on weekends they act as a bakery? And they have “pizza classes” for $650? Idk they have several “sister” type restaurants that are either owned by the same owner or its some kind of franchising thing, but they’re all equally VERY expensive for the food you get. Very upscale. For example [buttermilk pancakes, salted butter, maple syrup 16.25] compared to IHOP “chicken and pancakes” for $14 where you get not just 2 pancakes and butter, but 2 drumsticks. ADDITIONALLY on the Wine page “Modifications are politely declined.” what does this even mean? No changes to wine? Or no modifications to your MENU? Dawg if I’m paying you 20.50 for a rigatoni, you’re not putting “broccolini” in it.This shit ain’t mom’s house where I go to bed hungry if I don’t like it. I sit at the big kids table and get a big kid fork.

For those just reading the slip, these are indeed all full dishes (not just single line items), in LA where everything costs more. Overall 0/10 I wouldn’t eat here based on all this above, before even being infuriated by the “we pass the bill to you” shtick. I’m mildly infuriated just reading through this website.

Curious. You speak fervently of your constant sexual encounters with my mother.

Yet you also seem predisposed to share how her appearance is grotesque, and her body mass rivals that of marine animals, that her odor is extreme, suggesting per your own words that she is unwashed for several decades.

Perchance, is this your sexual preference and you merely project it upon dearest mother mine?

California judge charged with killing wife had 47 guns, 26,000 rounds of ammunition: Court documents (abcnews.go.com)

A California Superior Court judge arrested last week has now been charged with killing his wife in front of their adult son at their home. Court filings reveal the judge had over 47 weapons and 26,000 rounds of ammunition in his home.

Exusia ,
@Exusia@lemmy.world avatar

That’s not really a fair comparison though. They all handle and fire different. This piece of shit is still a piece of shit, but collecting different guns is more akin to “I participate in 10,000 point fights with my choice of Orks or Blueberry Spacemarines” than toasters.

Noone needs that but that’s a hobby.

Exusia ,
@Exusia@lemmy.world avatar

Shitheads get into all hobbies. Some hobbies are more dangerous than others, and need more safety than others.

You know what’s a dangerous hobby that ALSO appeals to masculinity-troubled people? Modding cars to go faster and drift harder. You can tool around in them legally and if you drive like a shithead you can drive through a crowd. Modding pickups is also a big shitwaffle magnet. Still a hobby.

I avoided the whole “are guns the problem” subject in my comment for a reason. My comment served to illustrate that collecting large numbers of “Object” is a hobby. Whether or not the hobby is good, or bad, or dangerous, or safe, was not my comment.

Exusia ,
@Exusia@lemmy.world avatar

I mean yeah, if someone had 50 different toasters that apply different patterns we wouldn’t bat an eye at it because that’s a hobby.

Exusia ,
@Exusia@lemmy.world avatar

No, it was a correction of how people collecting guns is not like collecting the same toaster over and over, more like different toasters, specifically not addressing anyone’s use of them.

Exusia ,
@Exusia@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t understand. On Android I can just open the file manager and “last downloaded object” is at the top of the list no matter where it went, letting me “open file location”

It’s a thing on my Fold and I know it was a thing on my Pixel 2 and 3 as well. Maybe just these 2 brands?

Oh my fucking God yes. Every individual pro (nfl?) football team has a sub Every individual pro fifa (whatever) soccer team has a sub Every individual ice hockey team has a sub Polo. Formula 1. COLLEGE football teams! College football divisions! And whos going to the super bowl. Basketball. A sub for who’s going to make it to the final 5. Volleyball. Whatever big volleyball bullshit is. And then relevant WOMENS versions for all of these (no extra hate, just extra numbers) Baseball! Baseball teams history!

Then there’s leagues! Big10. The other big conference! Every coalition for Soccer. Conferences for Basketball. Divisions for hockey. Like holy shit! There’s more categories for sports than nsfw!

EDIT: I need to add that I did the math in another comment: there are (For a US citizen) 32 NFL teams and 113 College football teams. 32 Fifa Soccer teams. 29 US Mens soccer clubs (plus 3 Canadian). 12 More Women’s Soccer teams -only one league. 10 Formula 1drivers/teams. 8 womens volleyball teams. 30 mens baseball teams (29US 1 Canada). 32 teams in the NHL. and lastly, 30 NBA teams. In total this is 331 “Teams” and is the bare minimum before consulting each city will post about a game, individual players with followings, and broad subs like “MLB” is different from “Orioles” and results in more subs needed to block

For mobile- Poweramp - let’s me view and play music by Folder. Google and Samsungs built in player suuuucks. You can’t build a Playlist with Poweramp, but if you have lots of your “own music” .mp3s, I highly recommend it.

And SimpleGallery. Infinitely better than whatever the fuck “Google photos” puts together. It lets you sort and view by, you guessed it, FOLDER NAME rather than “most recent” always at the top. It also let’s you Hide folders too for all those cute cat photos. Also allows Excluding folders, so that game thumbnail folder doesn’t show up too.

Source:I have a fold4

Exusia ,
@Exusia@lemmy.world avatar

I love my fold 4, and as long as I can afford them, will never go back to a normal phone. I believe in holding onto phones as long as possible, and won’t be getting a fold5 or fold6 if my screen holds out becsuse that’s just silly. This one works.

I mmade the jump based on the following argument: People agree to pay $1200 for an XL model phone every year but why. 6.X inches has been the standard since like…the pixel 2. 5 years now? People keep buying phones every year for what? There was nothing new. It’s marginally, unnoticeablely faster. The screen wasnt getting bigger. The pixel 3xl was just a pixel 2xl but newer. (I bought my 3xl when 5s had been announced so I wasn’t paying full retail) There was no reason to buy new phones every year and stay paying money to my telecom. The features just did not add up year over year and felt stagnant. I bought a pixel3 only because the pixel2 battery started inflating.

If you own a budget model phone, a flagship is worth that cost. If you hang onto your phone for 3+ years, a new flagship is worth the cost. But if you have a flagship, made last year, why would you sign a lease every year, what does perpetually paying $50 a month actually do for you? Phones are stagnant. You’re just paying to not have an old phone, or you’re paying because you want the ego of having a new phone. (No judgement just how people are, being the first person with a noticably new phone and getting complements feels good, I would know lol)

So I said fuck it and got a Fold2 right as price dropped, when fold3s dropped. I signed for 900, and had it a year. People complain about size, the crease, the weight. But ultimately these are petty whines. You stop noticing it. Hold your iPhone Max. Hold your Galaxy Ultra. Now go pick up a tiny flip phone from 2005. Go pick up an iPhone 4, or a galaxy 4. Your phone now is huge and heavy. You didn’t notice it because you got used to it. Folds are the same way. I traded my fold 2 for a fold 4 because burgundy and camera bump was much better. Cases for the fold2 were hard to find and fold4 came with one. Otherwise I would still have the fold2.

Fragility. Treat your $2000 phone with respect. Based on some peoples screens you’d swear they use it as a fucking hammer in their spare time. I understand here is where people have issues. The plastic screen is a dealbreaker I get it. If you drop it, caseless, onto concrete yes you do run the risk of breaking it. People wanting a more durable screen is fair. Hard agree. Samsung is the leader in this field and noone is challenging it yet, so they’re slacking. I pay $8 a month for asurion insurance through my provider. For $150 if I total the screen I get a new phone no questions asked. I really can’t ask for a better deal than that. If you’re on the fence, and the fragile screen scares you, get insurance. I don’t blame people too much for being afraid of breaking it, but there’s options now, where there wasn’t with the fold 1 and 2.

And no, I’m not a samsung mouthpiece. The repairability on folds is fucking ass. If you dont have insurance, the big screen is like $700. On top of that, battery replacements are total wash because Samsung doesn’t believe in pulltabs. If fragility is your issue, I get it. Anything else? Nah you will be ok you just gotta get used to it.
