Many if not most Star Trek memes could benefit from a Superfluous Picard

Ertebolle ,

The fact that you're bringing up Japan (which is massively overblown - you're at more radiation risk from a coal power plant) shows you're not serious about this.

Ertebolle ,

Here's an article - coal naturally contains trace amounts of radioactive elements and burning a bunch of it concentrates them.

Ertebolle ,

I'm not downvoting because I don't agree, I'm downvoting because the statement is factually inaccurate - coal power produces more radioactive waste than nuclear power does.

Ertebolle ,

But building new plants uses a shit ton of concrete. So we’re paying the carbon cost up front, and it can take years or even decades to break even.

That's not remotely on the same scale, carbon-wise. Global output is like 4 billion tons of concrete per year, a nuclear plant uses like 12 tons per megawatt; an all-in nuclear buildout would use a tiny, tiny fraction of global concrete production and the carbon costs aren't even remotely equivalent.

(also, wind power uses way, way more concrete)

Ertebolle ,

Gee, I wonder if the cost might go down if we built more of them, as is the case with, y'know, basically every other complicated thing that humans build.

Ertebolle ,

3800 people a year die from coal plant pollution in the US alone; there are, in fact, much worse things than Chernobyl

Ertebolle ,

Yeah, Ukraine is excited about maybe getting some F-16s and how much that could help with the air war and meanwhile a couple of F-22s could take down a whole squadron of them.

Yes. And yes. Article on the F-35.

Linux 6.6 To Better Protect Against The Illicit Behavior Of NVIDIA's Proprietary Driver (www.phoronix.com)

Luis Chamberlain sent out the modules changes today for the Linux 6.6 merge window. Most notable with the modules update is a change that better builds up the defenses against NVIDIA’s proprietary kernel driver from using GPL-only symbols. Or in other words, bits that only true open-source drivers should be utilizing and not...

Ertebolle ,

a) Good for them

b) How long before NVIDIA throws up their hands at the whole thing and does their own Linux distro + pushes all their cloud AI customers to use it? (it doesn't seem like they're ever going to be shamed / coerced into actually open-sourcing their driver)

Ertebolle ,

A great way to tell that a business is making way too much money is when they can afford to hire monkey cages full of lawyers to fling every terrible legal argument they can think of at you in the hope that one of them somehow sticks.

Ertebolle , (edited )

Yeah, everyone I know who adopted did so as a last resort and had a long expensive miserable slog of it; once you get through that experience it’s just as satisfying as having a biological kid, but it’s no picnic.

Ertebolle ,

It’s not a blood superiority thing, dude - we’re instinctually driven to procreate. If for whatever reason you can’t or don’t want to do that, you can adopt a kid and love them exactly as much and in exactly the same way as you would your biological offspring, but the idea of conceiving and bearing a child appeals to a very basic part of human nature for a lot of us.

Ertebolle ,

Sure, but after years of fucking one can eventually find oneself feeling a biological urge to procreate as well.

Ertebolle ,

"Have you seen <movie>?"

"I've seen parts of it"

Ertebolle ,

It's really not, though; it's not violent and it's not sexual. Male-presenting children's characters wear female clothes all the time without any controversy; Bugs Bunny is constantly dressing up as a girl bunny, Donald Duck wears a dress in "Donald in Mathmagic Land," and you can literally make Mario wear a wedding dress in Super Mario Odyssey.

(I'm on team Let Your Kids Watch R-Rated Movies If You Want, but even if you think society should get to restrict what parents can show their kids, drag is not something people have generally considered obscene or otherwise had a problem with)

Ertebolle ,

In fact, just 12 years ago the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association that video games are protected speech and that a California law banning the sale of violent video games to minors was illegal.

Ertebolle ,

And then they'll turn around and ban all of the ones that don't involve cross-dressing because in Shakespeare's time the female parts were all played by men.

More dog owners are questioning vaccines like rabies after COVID (www.pressherald.com)

More than half of U.S. dog owners expressed concerns about vaccinating their dogs, including against rabies, according to a new study published Saturday in the journal Vaccine. The study comes as anti-vaccine sentiments among humans have exploded in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic....

Ertebolle ,

Sure, but with the much bigger minus that rabid dogs are also likely to bite a lot of perfectly innocent people, particularly kids, and even more particularly, kids who have crazy anti-vaxxer parents that might not get them a (human) rabies shot in time to save their life after a dog bite.

(note how many kids die of self-inflected gunshot wounds because their parents are too stupid to keep them safe from those)

Ertebolle ,

OTOH, "have a great 1440 minutes" sounds sort of like an uplifting Rent reference.

Ertebolle ,

In general: bad.

But the lion's share of that groundwater is going to agriculture, and much of it specifically to animal feed, so unlike with carbon emissions, this feels like the sort of environmental disaster that market forces are at least going to be somewhat responsive to; less groundwater -> spike in alfalfa prices -> spike in beef prices -> people eat less beef -> people use less groundwater.

Ertebolle ,

It sounds from the article like the environmental destruction has been going on for decades and that it's already affecting crop output in some places.

Ertebolle ,

It's not like it's getting zero rainfall, it's just not getting enough to support its current levels of crop output; they were growing cereal crops in the Great Plains long before we figured out industrial-scale groundwater irrigation.

Ertebolle ,

Don’t own an Xbox or PC, I’m going to wait until they decide milking money out of an old game > exclusivity and play with the future GOTY edition on a smart refrigerator or a Playdate or whatever other weird platform they repackage it for.

Pope Francis calls US Catholic Church 'reactionary' (www.dw.com)

Pope Francis has lamented a “very strong reactionary attitude” in the US Catholic Church, saying that ideology had replaced faith in some parts of it and some members had failed to understand “there is an appropriate evolution in understanding matters of faith and morals.”...

Ertebolle ,

Isn't he, like, the boss of them though? If you're the Pope and you don't like a particular bishop then you reassign him to a diocese in the middle of the Sahara or wherever and put your own guy in his place.

Heck, this even works with cardinals - maybe you can't traditionally un-cardinal a cardinal, but you're an absolute monarch and you can make up whatever new laws you like - if you want to make it look more official then you assemble a council of a dozen other cardinals you like and get them to do it, but either way, if you want to get rid of the guy there's nobody really stopping you.

Ertebolle ,

There's plenty of precedent for disciplining misbehaving bishops, he yanked an anti-vaxxer one from Puerto Rico just last year. You may have a free hand in your diocese as far as pastoral care, but you're still representing the pope's authority.

Ertebolle ,

It feels to me like the modern Catholic Church ought to be uniquely schism-proof because without Rome you're basically just another random conservative Protestant church and there are other, equally conservative Protestant churches that are bigger + better at marketing.

Ertebolle ,

There are plenty of those already - many of the major Protestant denominations have at least some sort of argument why they have it; heck, the Mormons claim apostolic succession despite the lack of anything resembling an episcopal lineage because they say the apostles conferred it on Joseph Smith directly in a vision.

(and if you're going to make arguments based strictly on historical facts, then the fact that most of the current Catholic hierarchy - including every pope in the last 300 years - traces their ordination back to one 16th-century Italian dude with no idea who ordained him tends to poke a hole in those)

Ertebolle ,

If the best praise their PR people have to put forward is that it's not quite as horrifically buggy as previous Bethesda games, that's... not a great sign; Microsoft paid $7.5B for ZeniMax in large part so that this specific game would be an Xbox exclusive, if it's not the level of masterpiece that gets people to buy Xboxes just to run it then it'll be one of their biggest fails since Clippy.

Ertebolle ,

Those were the days, B&W pictures of coked-up anorexic Calvin Klein jeans models shot topless from the back with maybe a bit of sideboob depending on where they put their arm.

He was also a badass pilot:

Although he was never actually a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Doohan was once labelled the "craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Force". In the late spring of 1945, on Salisbury Plain north of RAF Andover, he slalomed a plane between telegraph poles "to prove it could be done", earning himself a serious reprimand. (Various accounts cite the plane as a Hurricane or a jet trainer; however, it was an Auster Mark IV.)

Yeah, my grocer has been sold out of Ukrainian Salmon for months, only kind they've had in stock is Hungarian Salmon and that's got way too much paprika on it plus I'm pretty sure it's actually some random lake fish they dyed pink.

Feels like Putin's lost a step, this should have been a much more interesting / inexplicable death; crushed by a herd of elephants or some such.

Great, seeing a picture of a trans man has made me aware of the existence of trans people, and therefore, according to GOP logic, it's only a matter of time before I become trans myself and have to fucking go bra shopping.

Troi literally had a baby with a non-corporeal alien entity, she's hardly one to get weirded out by that.

And her two serious lovers were a Klingon and a human-shaped bear, so it's not like her tastes are particularly vanilla even under normal circumstances
