Those who are against iOS and Apple in general, have you tried their devices lately?

I am dissapointed in my peers. For years I have always been told to stay away from Apple devices and the company in general. However, no one who said that actually used their devices, or used them but not recently (some had like iPhone 4s in the past). Their knowledge was always based on some 3rd hand impressions or internet...

  1. Stop caring about what other people think about Apple.
  2. Start using paragraphs.
  3. Learn how to express your thoughts in a short and clear manner.
Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

When you’re writing a text, you’re putting down a stream of thoughts. Our thoughts can be very chaotic and hard to understand. So it’s a good practice to review your texts. Are sentences connected to each other? Does this thought lead to the next one? Does this paragraph add value? Should you move or delete something? It takes practice to become a good editor.

You can also learn from how other people structure their texts. I pay attention to that when I read a post on Lemmy or article in some magazine. It’s a pleasure to read a good text. I try to understand, what makes it good and what makes a bad text bad. That knowledge helps me write better texts.

This article has some good points: theamericanscholar.org/writing-english-as-a-secon… Despite the title, it can be helpful for native speakers too.

'Leave our country': Indian students living in constant fear in Ukraine amid hostility (economictimes.indiatimes.com)

The challenges for Indian students pursuing medical degrees in war-torn Ukraine show no signs of abating, as they grapple with increasing hostility from sections of the local population, who perceive India as supporting Russia in the ongoing conflict. The situation has escalated since Ukraine initiated its recent offensive...

If those students want to stop being targeted, they should stop their government

How many governments did you stop, cowboy?

Why move from Reddit to a forum?

Sadly, I don’t see the answer to this question. While reddit shares some features with classic forums, these platforms are different. Moving to XenForo, which also requires a quite expensive license, is not the best choice as a reddit replacement.

Ok, how do I start self-hosting?

I’ve been following this community for some time in order to learn about self-hosting and, while I have learnt about a bunch of cool web services to host, I’m still lost on where/how to start. Does anyone have, like, a very beginner guide that is not just “install this distro and click these buttons”? I have an old...

You’d probably need to configure your router if you want to access your laptop when you’re outside of your home network (e.g. from a mobile phone). If there’s an incoming connection to port 443 (https), your router doesn’t even know which device in the network could handle it. Port forwarding should be easy to set up on any modern router using their web interface. Same applies to some VPS providers like AWS Lightsail, they might have firewalls.

Like with every big task, take it step by step. You can’t learn everything overnight, start with something small. Set up a web server (e.g. nginx) what will act as a reverse proxy. Make it accessible from the internet. Then try to set up one of the services from your list and focus on it.

Learn one thing at a time, don’t rush and avoid context switching.

Finally. Single click to open a file/directory is the first feature that I disable on a fresh system.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

Because no other OS or DE that I use does that and it’s not convenient to jump from one to another. As of the wear, I think it’s marginal. My main file manager is mc anyway.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

What’s there to maintain, the feature is already there and should be relatively simple. I can’t imagine that Twitter backend is so bad that it requires active work on all components.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

This is so dumb, what is he thinking? What’s the angle?

I’d guess that he wants to control what people see for one reason or another. I blocked a lot of communities here to make my feed more enjoyable.

@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

I am glad you’ve explained.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

The way you enforce any rule.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

I think you should educate yourself before arguing. LLMs are not what you are saying. They are huge math formulas with many variables, they can’t think, they can’t apply logic.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

Define a rule, announce it to people, educate them if needed on the subject, monitor and reward those, who obey the rule, establish consequences for violating it, establish a reporting mechanism, evaluate and improve at any step if something is not working.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

You’re manipulating. I’ve never said that we aren’t bunch of cells and that our universe can’t be represented by a math function. You think you were having your “I’m very smart” moment, but in reality you changed the actual subject of the argument, because you couldn’t win it. None of what you said changes the fact that LLMs (at least current) can’t think and apply logic. This has been proven by many researchers.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

OpenAI and other companies working on LLMs: we are not sure how exactly this works

Neuroscientists: we are not sure how exactly our brains work

bioemerl: I KNOW HOW ALL THIS WORKS AND IF YOU DO NOT AGREE YOU ARE EITHER TROLL OR JUST STUPID

Man, try being less ignorant and arrogant.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

Right. Why write something so obvious? “Oh, he probably breathes air as well.” Look, I can do that too.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

Yet another reason to serve this as a static content instead of using Twitter!

The science on whether mass masking is effective is far from settled

Be kind and wear a mask until it’s settled that they don’t help. What we know for sure is that it’s very hard to measure whether they’re effective or not.

Durotar ,

openai just makes a new gpt that needs even more resources

If they have investors who are paying for that, I see no problem. Operating at loss is not newsworthy nowadays, this is new reality.

It’s easy to talk about integrity when you’re not in that position.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

(a) survival bias (b) don’t take credit for what you did, you’re not a highly moral hero, it’s just how chemistry in your brain works; it’s perfectly normal to be egoistic, take care of yourself and not quit from the day 1 just because you don’t like what your boss asked you to do.

Both were widely used in 2000s too in some part of the world.

Durotar ,

The truth is that Russia and China are not related to this post at all. If anything, you’re trying to downplay the issue, but it is slow degradation what allows these things to establish as something normal and acceptable.

Discord is a web app, there’s no other way. You either use your main browser or the one they’re bundling it with.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

Theoretically, it may have additional features when it’s bundled with Electron, but ultimately there’s nothing wrong with running it in the browser.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

It’d be better if you had posted some non-US news instead of this. That’s how it works.

Durotar , (edited )
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

There is too much US based news

I don’t agree that we should post non-US news if we want to see something else

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Edited: it’s amazing how many people don’t get how it works, you’re simply parasites folks.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

Even in your interpretation he’s wrong. People decide what is valuable and if US news get a lot of upvotes then they are valuable. If he thinks something else can be valuable, he should create posts instead of complaining that someone else doesn’t serve him.

I enjoy ProtonVPN and other services that come with the premium subscription. Proton Pass with email aliases is a very good addition.

The real question is since when CSS is good?

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

Also it was very stupid, ineffective and had allies.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

I support the sentiment, but today everything is a service that wants your money, this resource is finite. And when it comes to YouTube, it’s not even about whether you like it or not: YouTube is a monopolist.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

Our default sort converts everything to string, then sorts by UTF-16 code. So yes, [1, 10, 3] is sorted and you are going to live with it.

I’m not sure whether this is satire or not.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

That’s not true. “The science isn’t fully decided” means that long-terms effects are extremely hard to measure, it literally takes decades. The amount of liquids of different flavors is so big that you can’t realistically test them all. Different flavors require different chemicals, you can get the same taste with different chemicals too. Yes, basic liquid is probably less harmful than cigarettes, but even for that there’s not enough data to say that this is a scientific fact.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s extremely easy to do if both the server and client are using wireguard. Just add FwMark = 42 to both interfaces (the exact numeric value doesn’t matter). This way, internet requests will go through the paid VPN provider and local requests will be working too.

If not, good luck with iptables.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

People online also say it’s used to detect which controller is in use.

I don’t get it. Any modern game can detect when you connect or disconnect a controller on the fly, in the actual game.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

I wouldn’t trust a website that wants your username and password.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

With a mobile client, for example, you can check if it sends your password somewhere else, there are tools. If you use an open-source client then it’s even easier. Major clients have something that you could call reputation, though I wouldn’t put too much trust into it.

Here I know for a fact that my password goes to a third-party: https://i.imgur.com/Z69Atey.png

People who back into parking spots: Why?

To me, it seems objectively easier to pull into a parking space forward and then back out of the space when you are ready to leave. You don’t have to line up with the lines while driving backwards, and it’s easier to keep from hitting other cars as well. So why back in? To me, the only advantage I can think of is that you...

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

Because you can easily park like this “|||” and not like this “|/|”. Also, it’s much easier to leave safely.

How is it fine for pirates to pay for a VPN to not pay for a service?

I only use free VPN extensions or apps and I fully aware of the limitation of this. I use shabby ones, which don’t protect and probably sell my data. It slow and I can’t have only a few location. But I can’t get around the idea that people can pay for a service to refuse to pay to a service. Please help me understand.

Durotar ,
@Durotar@lemmy.ml avatar

You’re paying for your privacy. Also, a copy of a game or a movie is not a service.
