Some autistic people find making phone calls extremely stressful and unpleasant and will avoid them at all costs.

Please don’t try and force your communication preferences on others.

Earlier today, I came out as to my bosses and our company wellbeing ambassador. I said that discovering my autism had dramatically improved my mental health. I suggested it would be good to improve people's understanding of autism, because we're a software shop and we have quite a few autists, some of whom probably don't know they're autistic (especially if they grew up in the 60s and 70s). I also said I planned to say something brief to my immediate colleagues next week.

Bosses were supportive and enthusiastic. Wellbeing ambassador asked me to contribute something to her company-wide newsletter. That went better than I'd dared to hope!

@nddev @actuallyautistic Software development is a classic autist job. The best programmers are autistic IMO so it's a bonus!

When scientists make erroneous pronouncements outside their area of expertise that's misinformation. When they make predictions that prove wrong that can be hugely consequential. How do we stop ourselves from doing this and how do we recognise epistemic trespass in others? What actually constitutes 'expertise', particularly in novel, interdisciplinary contexts ?

What is this "mask", what do y'all mean by "masking"?

Like, what's the difference between a mask and a public persona?

Both my parents are pretty autistic and in total denial about it. Lacking siblings, cousins, a culture, or human contact, I really have no frame of reference for this stuff.

Thanks.

@Dianora@ottawa.place avatar

@punishmenthurts @sentient_water @poloniousmonk @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy @autistic[email protected] It tends to be genetic. There have been cases of people looking for information on autism of siblings or parents coming the realisation they are also on the spectrum.

Really hard to know. Certainly I think one almost has to be autistic to be a watchmaker so it's not like there was a sudden epidemic of autism.

I only laugh when something in genuinely funny and have been perplexed in movie theatres watching people laugh their heads off at something that wasn't funny. Apparently we don't indulge in "social" laughing but think of it: Literal minded thinking can make for extremely funny comedy.

@poloniousmonk @sentient_water @punishmenthurts @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy @autistic[email protected] That's the best kind of humour for me. When I spot something very funny but no one else seems to notice it. You'll see me pull that here actually.

Neurotribes by Steve Silberman

This was a brutal read. I probably would have stopped around chapter 2 or 3 (the run-up to WWII in regards to the treatment of autistic people) if I hadn't known his central premise was that neurodivergent people aren't broken and are rather part of the natural range of humanity and should be as celebrated as any other group. The history of diagnosis and treatment is detailed and clear.

Learned about the death of Harry Frankfurt, the author of "On Bullshit." It made me sad, but I am extremely grateful because it helped me process the Trump presidency and the gang on Right Wing Media. He will be missed and purchased a few of his books in his memory.

@ewisniowski @philosophy Quite a thin book. It's sitting on my bookshelf. I did not hear about Harry Frankfurt's death. :-(
