Making sodium formate (HCOONa), using electrochemistry :
CO2 + H2 =>> formic acid
H2O =>> H2 + 1/2O2
NaCl + H2O =>> NaOH + 1/2H2 + 1/2Cl2
formic acid + NaOH =>> sodium formate

I guess they must use something similar to this, probably shortening some steps and using efficient solvent at the right temperature and pressure and with the right electrocatalist.

Well, I still prefer photosynthesis which produces sugar (and +). Plants are self replicating, use free solar energy, captues CO2 straight from the air and all this probably at a tiny fraction of the cost.

You have either plutonic or basaltic volcanoes. This is a quiet plutonic one : it’s lava flows without explosions, so, there could be much worse scenarios. But still, it is a big one.
Edit : My use of “plutonic” might be outdated or wrong : I think this is the old way it was described, but today, I cannot find a reference to support it.

A_A ,
@A_A@lemmy.world avatar

You are right
…and my use of “plutonic” is either outdated or plainly wrong.
I found this for anyone who wants to read more :
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lava
Properties of lava

Because of the role of silica in determining viscosity and because many other properties of a lava (such as its temperature) are observed to correlate with silica content, silicate lavas are divided into four chemical types based on silica content:
felsic,
intermediate,
mafic, and
ultramafic.

@A_A@lemmy.world avatar

Oups, maybe this is an outdated terminology : I couldn’t find any references to support it. Please read my other comments and “edit” around here.

Huge composting effort should be undertaken. As for the nasty smelly gases from it, those should be burned with an excess of oxygen to get rid of any smell.
Of course, many samples should be taken and frozen for lab. analysis.

Great ! …and you run this code on a quantum computer ? … and it did indeed save time (over classical) ? … and you and your group published a paper highlighting this ?

Only I’m not sure of any paper published ever doing that and I seek to find one that do this without ambiguity since many years now. Of course, it is not my domain and I may be completely mistaken.

Please forgive my tone and arrogance - - I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings - - but it’s been promised for a long time now and I’m growing impatient and skeptical.

Thanks for your time, take care.

R&D (research end developpement) is essential, yet, most research projects leads to dead ends.
I say we should continue R&D in this quantum computing but, in the meantime, it is useless.

Sometimes it goes like this : here I was answering to someone who was convinced to be absolutely right and I’m still quite believing the opposite.
I don’t know how to put things straight in these occasions without using some quite radical speech and this may look like being a cunt.
You may be right : I’m putting too much energy in this thread, especially considering all the downvotes. But I did put much much more energy during many years reading useless scientific article on this topic, leading to nowhere and I’m hoping someone could at last prove this to be useful.

Olive oil production
(Annual average 2016 to 2021)
3,104,000 tonnes
Specific gravity at 20 °C = 0.911
( meaning 0.911 tonnes / 1000 litres )
… = 3,407,244,786 litres

5000 litres is 1/681,449 of annual prod.
(still a big amount for the average folks)

Olive oil regulation and adulteration

While less than 10% of world olive oil production meets the criteria for labeling as extra-virgin, it has been estimated that up to 50% of retail oil is labeled “extra-virgin”. Some oil labeled “extra-virgin” is diluted with cheaper olive oils or other vegetable oils.

So, ~40% of production retail is adulterated
… = 1,362,897,914 litres (or ++)

An Olive committing adultery is adulterated

In physics, emergence is used to describe a property, law, or phenomenon which occurs at macroscopic scales (in space or time) but not at microscopic scales, despite the fact that a macroscopic system can be viewed as a very large ensemble of microscopic systems.

A_A ,
@A_A@lemmy.world avatar

Physics needs new ideas and enthusiasm at least to try and explain this Amaterasu particle.
Your ideas here are similar to my own : there is a (yet unknown) mechanism that is generating particles and it occurs in otherwise empty space.

ableism : Discrimination against persons with disabilities or in favour of those without.

Hum, right, I get what you are saying here.
I believe it’s a gray area. And it is hard to draw the line of what’s a disease and what’s diversity.
For instance, we heard the same speech from deaf people not wanting their deaf kids to wear cochlear thingnies. I say it’s for the kids to make the choice.

This new thing “gene therapy” has nice potential …of course there will be (also) extremely bad cases, but overall I decide stubbornly to believe that the positive will outweigh the negative.

Please down-vote my comment here since I am not trying to see your point (which is a fair point by the way 👍).

This is a mechanical device that allows coupling of any wheels of any vehicles to any electric motor.

it is designed in such a way to permit vertical movement of the wheel without the need of such movement of the motor. So basically it is a new type of suspension.

Since it needs many gears in a row for the transit of mechanical energy it will incure an inefficiency factor.

Nothing in there except for this :

This new project actually was built on the outskirts of an existing geothermal field where, in Terrell’s words, “there’s hot rock, but there’s no fluid.” To generate geoethermal energy there, Fervo had to drill two horizontal wells through which it pumps water. Fervo pushes cold water through fractures in the rock, which heats it up so it can generate steam back at the surface. It’s a closed-loop system, so the water gets reused — an important feature in a drought-prone region like Nevada.

Sounds like a made up word (but no) :
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfalfa

Alfalfa, also called lucerne, is a perennial flowering plant (…). It is cultivated as an important forage crop in many countries around the world. It is used for grazing, hay, and silage, as well as a green manure and cover crop.

A_A , (edited )
@A_A@lemmy.world avatar

Very good indeed. I heard there is concern about salmonella bacteria in alfalfa… Maybe soaking in water + salt + vinegar be enough ?
Edit (from wikipedia) :

Alfalfa sprouts may contain microbiological pathogens, mainly from Salmonella or E. coli, which have caused numerous food product recalls and illness outbreaks, putting sprouts into a “high risk” category for food safety. People with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly, pregnant women, or those taking prescription drugs affecting the immune system, should not eat sprouts.

“When the gloves are pressurized, they restrict movement and create pressure points during tasks, sometimes resulting in pain, muscle fatigue, abrasions, and occasionally more severe injuries such as onycholysis.
