Does anyone else have trouble sleeping after a day where you were overstimulated? I had one of those days yesterday. It's now after 3:30 in the morning and I'm still awake. My body feels tense, and when I was with my mom earlier, we noticed that I was jumpy, flinching more often when she touched me. It doesn't help that I'm not feeling great and can't seem to get comfortable. Some of my health issues are flaring. I think being overstimulated somehow triggered them. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this kind of thing. #ActuallyAutistic#autism#neurodivergent#neurodiversity @actuallyautistic@actuallyautistics@neurodivergent@neurodivergentblind@neurodivergents@neurodiversity@neurodiversity
There were too many people and not enough breaks in the crowd and everything was happening everywhere and I couldn't think or process or make decisions and my skin was tingling and
I didn't have a great day 😅
But I made it home and had naptime on my couch with my plushie and also a hot drink
I think I was overstimulated? Anxious? I'm not good at identifying emotions. I think I narrowly avoided a full, external meltdown
@Zumbador@actuallyautistic@neurodivergents I also have face blindness. When I was young, I’d berate myself harshly because I thought this meant I was “stupid” or “didn’t care enough to notice.” If someone noticed? It was humiliating and heartbreaking. I’ve not gotten better at recognizing faces, practice didn’t help.
@actuallyadhd I've mentioned before my dissatisfaction with apps created for #ADHD, and I realised why today:
Most ADHD tools are trying to increase something or another - never trying to help you manage from the current position. If there were a tool that could help me take account of what I must do, what I want to do, and how much attention & energy I have available on a given day, that'd be perfect.
I want to start with #ADHDAcceptance - then, maybe, work up from a solid baseline
@neurodivergents Is it the same story with tools for other ND things? That they focus more on 'improving' than on working with what you've already got?
@Zumbador
> a "in the heat of a fight" situation, would you agree?
Unless you actually want to take knives to each other, this feeling is usually the pace of a conversation bring too fast. Far more words are being spoken per minute than can be heard and thought about.
In these situations, I find anything that slows the pace down can help. There are various ways of doing this, effective mirroring can be a good one.
There are also conversation styles where it's socially appropriate for the conversation to go fast and even overlap.
Which makes sense, because even if that does lead to some conflict, different people can have different levels of comfort with conflict.
I have a friend who I talk fast and with and we're doing fine and afterwards my partner says the level of conflict was hard to hear, so I check, and no really we were both fine.
@bike@actuallyautistic@neurodivergents That's hard to fit into a mastodon post for me.
I think that people often do not really communicate their needs and feelings and expect other people to 'just know' and i think that having a dynamic of constantly giving each other feedback is helping.
Also i've learned to make space for emotional reactions. For example, when somebody is really angry, they may need to vent.
@bike@actuallyautistic@neurodivergents There's a lot to it.
People have different needs and capacities regarding communication, too.
I kinda have a "social battery", a limited amount if energy that i can put into social interactions.
Every interaction with other entities costs me energy. It may also give me some sort of comfort, but it still can get exhausting.
In the past i've had trouble communicating needs like this to people, that has caused trouble before.
@bike@actuallyautistic@neurodivergents I think it's bound up a lot with other aspects of communication, basics of how people (in this societal setting) interact with each other.
It's kind of exhausting for me to express my thoughts right now, especially with the character limit. I will stop it for now.
