It looks fine from lemmy.world instance, but not my personal instance. I had this issue with my Display Name as well at other instances, may take a while for it to take effect
Hey all! Mod team of r/unixporn here. After a couple weeks of work on our end, we finally have a Lemmy community at LemmyWorld that we’re committing to moderating in the long run. Additionally, due to Lemmy’s federation, you should be able to crosspost between here and there even if you don’t have an account on LemmyWorld....
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using an URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !unixporn
Nothing you do on the internet is private. You can remain anonymous on Lemmy by joining an instance that doesn’t require an email, and not using your real name. That’s as close to private as you’re going to get.
I left slashdot for reddit, and reddit for lemmy. Those were replacements from my point of view.
I’m not sure what you mean with “replace” in general. Taking over their servers and replacing the actual running software? Or maybe using their domain name for a lemmy instance? Transfer all logins and data to a lemmy instance and delete them from their systems?
Those are unlikely.
Becoming mainstream, having more media attention and influence than reddit? Then becoming more interesting for spammers and infested with lower quality content? Hopefully not.
Hello, some people have told me that it is possible to see lemmy posts from mastodon. To me it makes a lot of sense to have a single app for whole fediverse. However, mastodon is not doing a good job at this....
It kinda does. But the problem is the microblogs people post to the groups on kbin drown it out.
I followed elonjet on my instance. If I click on the main kbin page then microblog (NOT from a group, since it will filter only microblogs to the group) and scroll I will find the elonjet updates along with all the other stuff people probably mistakenly posted by clicking + and then add post instead of add thread (probably because reddit called them posts).
So it does work correctly. If you filter out all the microblogs that were probably posted by mistake.
Oh and you can get directly to only the specific content by clicking your name in top right, profile, followed and choosing the followed user. You'll see all their posts there.
Well, I just learned something, but what does “control” the IP mean? If they are only validating a single address via http then presumably you could just use an Amazon elastic IP as long as it resolves. I doubt that letsencrypt will support that but I would be interested to know. If they do then yeah, you could presumably set up the instance using the IP as the name, but I don’t know why you would want to. Apart from the fact that it would be hard to remember, could change at some point, screwing things up, it might work. I suggest OP do the necessary and report back accordingly.
The reason being that federation means other instances send you things. It’s not pull-only, or else you could likely get away with private instances sitting behind NAT. But since activitypub involves publishing to inboxes from source to destination, they need some way to reach you. And since we want to validate that connection and that some external authority can vouch for ita ownership, we use TLS Certs with the DNS hostname that matches your server name.
I think a big help to avoid this is if any “official” apps automatically point to something like lemmyverse search or Fediverse Observer rather than Join Lemmy or any singleinstance. Mastodon.socialwas already by far the largest before the only app named “mastodon” available in the major mobile repositories was built to automatically have you create an account on mastodon.social to “Make it easier for the normies”.
The fact that I dont’ even know the name of any lead developers of #lemmy as opposed to /u/[email protected] is probably a good sign too.
Meta’s new text-based social app Threads has quickly gained 100 million users since launching last week, which appears to be negatively impacting traffic on Twitter. According to web analytics, Twitter traffic declined 5-11% over the first two days Threads was available compared to the previous week. Threads was able to grow...
I am willing to be corrected, but from what I understand from my online friend (who is Indian (living in the region) and reports on tech with a focus on India, Asia and Southeast Asia), a lot of Threads’ early adoption is entrenchment. For instance, most of India’s IG users migrated to Threads, and that was part of the initial 10 million.
I just don’t think that we can look at Threads’ adoption rates in the same way as, say, we look at Mastodon or even early Twitter. Threads is built upon an existing base: Instagram. Meta even pre-made your Threads account if you have IG. I mean, technically I have a Threads account, sitting there, in the shadows. I also have an Excite account. And I dug up my MySpace account in a fit of pique (and then remembered why I left MySpace all those years ago). But having something and using something are different.
That not to say that Threads isn’t going to end up as Meta’s “revenge” just that the adoption is not necessarily because Threads is better, but that the entire social media monetization culture is pre-built through Instagram; and there not only is no barrier to entry, but you can stumble into the Threads “garden” with ease. It’s basically the same model Microsoft used to bootstrap Windows using the pre-installed DOS base. And it will succeed because the outreach mechanisms are already in place.
That doesn’t change my mind about choosing Mastodon. I have different online handles for different needs. I lost my original IG handle many years ago, so made one using my real name to lurk on IG; so my Threads handle will end up being my real name, and that’s a show stopper for using the platform. My real name social media are “honey pots” to keep nosey companies out of my hair and ways to keep an eye on my squirrelly remnants of a family. I have no desire to post anything on my real name Threads identity.
Over reliance on algorithms has degraded the user experience to the point that the average user is drowning in ragebait and extremist politics, because they drive up engagement. Just like a toddler, algorithms don’t discriminate between good and bad attention, so everything that gets clicks is thrust forward. Now, you could...
I’ve actually created a Lemmy instance (Lemmy.link) to bridge the gap between RSS feeds and Lemmy. We have 36 communities (topics) you can subscribe to from your home instance. Each community has the RSS sources listed in the “Feeds” section of the community sidebar. I’m always open to feedback on new community ideas or how to make it better. Currently I’m working on having the bot parse the article and ignore if it is an ad or sponsored and also including the channel name in the subject line for YouTube sources.
Well I would recommend it since it works, hence the name, shitjustworks lol.
In all seriousness, you can’t start a new platform and simultaneously expect to exclude large segments of potential users. Shitjustworks seems to toe the line better than other instances. They ban spam/bots while still allowing most content.
Generally, I recommend avoiding the top two instances if you are considering creating an account, and I would recommend avoiding beehaw for other reasons. So that leaves you at shitjustworks.
The problem with this is where do you draw the lines and how do you enforce it? For example I mod a community for a specific sports league. Should there be an instance for the one league with communities for each of the teams? Maybe an instance for the sport in general but then what if you have the same team names in different leagues. Or the same league name in different countries? What about if we wanted to group team communities under a geographic instances instead of by league or by sport?
I don’t see the problem. I don’t have a right to my screen name. Anyone can use variations of that name to post anything they want on any platforms they want. I can’t stop them. And I should not be able to stop them.
If my precious online identity gets hit in the confusion… Well, that’s the risk I take if I have tied my online identity to nothing else but a meaningless pseudonym, easily faked, copied, and impersonated.
For me, this is just a simple demonstration that you can’t trust the name “goat”, and a picture of a goat, as a reliable identifyer. Now that I type it out, this is just stupidly obvious. Anyone who thinks that a goat picture and a nickname reliably identify someone on the internet, is just being very, very stupid in this instance.
I find it dangerous to allow someone to impersonate someone else on the fediverse (an admin too) and begin starting trouble.
I don’t find that dangerous at all. I find it very disturbing that anyone would be stupid enough to believe that the nickname “goat” and a goat picture is enough to reliably identify them as the same person.
All in all, that seems like a non problem to me. A misunderstanding among a stupid minority, easily cleared up, whenever it is desired.
Hi, I’m an admin at fanaticus.social. Sorry for the inconvenience! Game bots are an important way for us sports fans to interact with one another during games but I understand how annoying they can be if you don’t care about the sport.
In the future, we are planning on adding the game bots for the other major sports as well (they’re not in season now) but hopefully that will be a nice jumping off point for you.
So I saw a recent post on lemmy from admins of another instance, forgive me for not remembering which, where they posted a full transparency update on Meta requesting a meeting with the admins of that instance. The admins declined, and then shared the correspondence with their community via screenshots of the original email from...
If I put content out there, I’m usually going to want an audience for it. Obviously there are exceptions to this where people need a small, reliable, defederated instance. But it being data someone can scrape is not an issue.
Having access to my phone, my real name, my internet use, my health data, my financial records. No thanks.
My biggest concern certainly isn’t age groups. My biggest concern is interest groups. The initial influx from the Reddit protests created a lot of communities that will definitely become ghost towns. And there’s going to need to be a process to clean that up eventually. The interests that are here right now are good for keeping the people already here. What’s going to be interesting to watch is if broader appeal topics will start to grow or not. As I said, I expect a lot of die-off actually in the early days as people try out the Fediverse but then go back to what they were already used to.
Reddit had a lot of help from being a private company when they were growing. Anyone familiar with Reddit’s history will know that it got propped up in part, eventually, by really high-quality celebrity events like the AMAs (Ask Me Anythings) coordinated with big names in multiple fields, though most popularly film and television. I worry that the Fediverse, as a decentralized entity, will never have something like that. Producers, movie marketers, agents, people like that are far less likely to take a call from someone running a Lemmy instance than they were from an outreach officer of a private company that had some weight behind it. Now, that’s not the only way to grow, but… Damn it helps.
I think you should more clearly define how it would work and what features you want. Then, all the technical problems will soon surface and you will see that it is not as appealing anymore.
How do you log in? How do you reconcile people with the same name? Which instance are you representing? There are tons of difficult questions that make the idea impractical.
As far as I know the bug still exists. It is caused by having the host-name of your server set to the same thing as the domain name for your Lemmy instance. The quick and easy fix is to change the host-name of your server.
In the past few days, I’ve seen a number of people having trouble getting Lemmy set up on their own servers. That motivated me to create Lemmy-Easy-Deploy, a dead-simple solution to deploying Lemmy using Docker Compose under the hood....
I must be doing something wrong here because unlike many others I can’t seem to get this working! Please can you offer some advice?
I have amended the config.env file to change the HOSTNAME, SITE NAME and ADMIN USER but left everything else the same.
I then ran ./deploy.sh and everything seems to have worked because it presented me with the admin login credentials and basic instructions to shutdown and start the instance. I tried simply typing the IP address of the docker container in to a browser but that didn’t work and TBH I didn’t expect it to. I then typed the URL into the browser and I’m getting a “ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS” error message. I read through the trouble shooting on your Github but the only reference to too many redirects mentions a Cloudflare API token, I’m not using Cloudflare nut I am using nginx proxy manager to point my URL to the docker container.
If you're building a whitebox server, you need to see this motherboard!
I’m sorry to disappoint you, in that this is a consumer motherboard. So yes, AMD PSP exists, no iLO....
