For almost as long as she has been writing songs, Helienne Lindvall has been fighting for the rights of songwriters. But it wasn’t until 2007 – when scriptwriters in the United States brought Hollywood to a juddering halt, buckled Daniel Craig’s stint as James Bond, and forced hours of repeats onto the air – that she...
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !deserts
A. You’re now allowing people to hop, and even name change. Let’s say they’ll allow that. But I think both of those are things that will have to be agreed upon if it’s done at all.
B. You’re missing the password. Every instance should have a unique salt, passwords should NEVER be reversible, and never be stored insecurely (AKA before salting the hash for instance). I use a different password for every site, but I’ve had sites tell me “Your password is X” … holy shit that’s a HUGE security flaw for multiple reasons.
So if I’m migrating and don’t need to set a new password, that’d be questionable.
C. This can be done unscrupulously. If I get control of someone’s account, I can migrate it and essentially steal all their accounts and posts. For 99 percent of us who cares, but let’s say there’s a post from “Justin Bieber” and I get his account, migrate it, use a new password, and now make his posts say “I don’t suck cocks”…
It’s probably more important when it’s a big game studio who posts update and such to Lemmy somewhere but the point is accounts will have a huge value eventually, letting you migrate it with a click might be dangerous.

I remember when twitter first came out and people were talking about “tweets” and it sounded just as stupid as xing sounds today. But the word has made it into mainstream lexicon and been normalized. Just like “googling” something just means to search. Tweet will mean to message something. I think part of the reason he is abandoning twitter is because it is becoming increasingly hard to legally fight other people using the terms for his platform for other platforms. For instance Mastadon is using “toot” which started from “twoot” which started from tweet.
I also still think he is an idiot for abandoning a brand name that is literally in every house and on every storefront. Even if they cant defend the vocabulary to abandon it all is the dumbest business decision I’ve ever heard of.
p.s. for xing I like “kissing” since XOXO is hugs and kisses with the X being the kiss. Considering how homophobic Elon is having his platform being a bunch of people kissing would just be to perfect!
While I don’t agree with the author’s use of “major CSAM problem”, if you browse instance federation list, you might notice a few mastodon instances that suggest they might be a MAPs community at best (domain name like pedo-school, mapsupport, etc usually with cute dolls in their banner image). They are closed community so can’t see what happening inside.
Votes are federated. They are tied to account names. Only your instance can tie them to your IP.
DMs are insecure in that admin instances can read them. Most instances tell you not to use them.
Scraping is more resource intensive than using an API to have data submitted to you. Since you are now offering a service you can set terms on what you can legally do with that data while scraping can lead to legal issues. PR issues as well.
In general using a corporate social media will allow companies to track you (or buy the tracking data from the social media company) far more thoroughly than scraping lemmy.
I’m not actually going to read all that, but I’m going to take a few guesses that I’m quite sure are going to be correct.
First, I don’t think Mastodon has a “massive child abuse material” problem at all. I think it has, at best, a “racy Japanese style cartoon drawing” problem or, at worst, an “AI generated smut meant to look underage” problem. I’m also quite sure there are monsters operating in the shadows, dogwhistling and hashtagging to each other to find like minded people to set up private exchanges (or instances) for actual CSAM. This is no different than any other platform on the Internet, Mastodon or not. This is no different than the golden age of IRC. This is no different from Tor. This is no different than the USENET and BBS days. People use computers for nefarious shit.
All that having been said, I’m equally sure that this “research” claims that some algorithm has found “actual child porn” on Mastodon that has been verified by some “trusted third part(y|ies)” that may or may not be named. I’m also sure this “research” spends an inordinate amount of time pointing out the “shortcomings” of Mastodon (i.e. no built-in “features” that would allow corporations/governments to conduct what is essentially dragnet surveillance on traffic) and how this has to change “for the safety of the children.”
Hey y’all! First time trying to self-host something, I started with a local Nextcloud instance for me and my family to use. I just wanted to make sure that no outsiders can enter the instance (access it or its files) through a browser on another connection....
It sounds like you are accessing it only from your local network, and as long as it stays that way its fine. I have a DNS Server at home, set up a domain name, therefor have certificates from letsencrypt which get automatically renewed for https access, AND STILL I only access it from my local network with no ports open to the www.
If you have your instance openend up to the internet (e.g. by port forwarding from your ISPs router to your nextcloud instance) and have no encryption / no certificate, thats a major flaw and i would advise you to shut it down immediately and close the port.
Sort of. DirectX was an entire collection of programming applications, not the application itself. Basically, the X was a stand-in for all the various Direct APIs that made up the suite. DirectDraw was the window one you’re probably thinking of. There was also Direct3D, DirectSound, DirectMusic, and DirectPlay.
Another way to think about it is that it’s akin to AdobeX. There’s Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Acrobat, etc…
That being said, it was 100% the basis for the Xbox’s name. It was a DirectX Box, and DirectX was (at least at first) the primary method of writing games for the console. And since Windows also used DirectX, it made games much easier to port to PC. By that point, the X had sort of taken on a life of its own, and Microsoft started using it simply as a way to signify that something was made for the Xbox. Xinput, for instance, is the protocol that Xbox controllers use. But the X doesn’t stand for anything in that case, except to signify that it was designed for use with the Xbox.

There is a sports instance of Lemmy, I don’t remember what it’s called though. I think I saw the red devils community (name could be wrong, I don’t watch sports) drop a post about moving to the instance.

She’s a goddamned moron. Feel free to check my correspondence with her on her post. That being said, you guys do need to have a conversation about fauxbait. It is legal, obviously so to anyone with half a brain cell, but the name does kinda cast a poor shadow on the instance. As we know, morons are loud and obnoxious and draw all kinds of unwanted attention, but they usually get what they want. Ya gotta ask yourselves if the community is worth the trouble it is going to continue to bring.
I do. I love to self host everything I can. I like to have control over my own data. I host my own GitLab instance. I host my own Nextcloud instance. Running Mastodon, Kbin, Matrix, you name it.. All my DNS records point to my server IP.
