The only game I have ever played is FIFA on a PS4. Now I have a gaming laptop but have no idea how I should go about playing games on Linux. Appreciate your help in advance!
Rimworld (Survival. Very quirky, choose your own survival adventure)
Hades. (Made me feel like i was renting video games for the snes and trying to play it all weekend long)
Backpack Hero. (Indie game, bit of tetrising needed, loot adventure with a decent turn based combat for what it is)
Dead Cells. (Lot of humour packed into a metroidvania platformer. Roguelite gives it a lot of replayability. Reminds me of Hades but sidescrolling goodness)
Valheim (Viking survival game. They specifically wanted to go low poly and get the feel of something like OG Tombraider)
This is my first Nintendo system since the NES. I’ve never been a big fan of their first-party properties when I’ve played on others’ consoles, although I am interested in the Switch Zelda games....
To anyone who might be tasked with programming Gaia and her subroutines when Elon Musk Ted Faro eventually fucks up... Can you please remember to write "sudo shutdown -h now" and "sudo killall -9 Hades" on every bit of your machines? Thanks.
Unfortunately, Hades was actually needed several times before Gaia managed a biosphere that could support human life.
We could eat the rich tho? Stop that there Starship Odyssey from becoming a squandered opportunity wasted on the elite that comes back to bite humanity as a species in the ass.
care to expand on this more? I do know Squad seems to have a quite community split update but since I don’t focus heavy on milsim so I just take whatever youtuber presented and said. ST:E is still EA and judging from the last live stream they seem to bite the bullet hard upgrading to UE5, but engine upgrade is always hard but should pay dividends later down the road. Especially for a EA game, I think the general expectation for game to just blow up fro EA is really odd. Look at say BG3 or Hades during EA, they don’t have that high player count as well even though they are made by more well know devs than Offworld.
Generally they weren’t depicted as ‘evil’ so much as necessary components of the divine ecosystem.
The idea of ‘evil’ as we know it largely developed out of monotheistic ideals and the idea that there was a perfect single good and that any opposition to that was inherently evil.
Zeus wasn’t associated with the underworld, but he was a dick and not always good. And Hades wasn’t always bad. In polytheism the gods were often a projection of spectrum of human qualities and behaviors and not monolithic.
I would like to clarify that Chaucer is Late Middle English, and English standards were in large part based on his writing, so his writing is generally understandable for most English readers. Early & Middle Middle English, though, not so much… Here’s a poem written at the start of the Early Middle English period by a very conservative writer, showing a transition betwen Old English and Early Middle English, called Durham (written in the early 12th century):
Is ðeos burch breome geond Breotenrice, steppa gestaðolad, stanas ymbutan wundrum gewæxen. Weor ymbeornad, ea yðum stronge, and ðer inne wunað feola fisca kyn on floda gemonge. Here’s part of the opening of Layamon’s Brut, from around 1200 CE (notice the simplified grammar / less inflection, and more familiar spelling):

Taken from Robert Mannyng’s Handlyng Synne, he was from Northern England and lived near Cambridge, 14th century (this one is pretty readable for English speakers, other than the words no longer used in Modern English):
Þe fyrst poynt of þy shryfte oweþ to be, ‘with þy gode wyl and hertë fre, whan þou art yn þy lyfë best, Awey þou shalt þy synnë kest;’ For þan wurschepest þou God aboue, And forsakest þy synne for hys loue. Dauyd seyþ, yn wurde to fulfyl, God shrofe hym with hys gode wyl; Abyde nat tyl þou most nedly, For þan hyt ys with fors and maystry; Þou shryuest þe þan for drede, Nat for loue, but more for nede; Þan semeþ hyt þat hyt shulde be Þat þy synne forsakeþ þe. Chaucher’s The Book of the Duchess, Chaucer is important for reviving English as a language used for art (ever since the Norman conquests, English usage was stigmatized and the prestige languages were French and Latin, so there’s very little Middle English literature up until Chaucer), he introduced a lot of now commonly used vocabulary and was the example for English poetry for a long time.
William Caxton’s Blanchardine, a less-than-ideal translator who was the first person to introduce the printing press into England and the first English retailer of printed books, late 15th century, around when Late Middle English started to transition into Early Modern English (and also right around the time period that English-speakers, including literate people, started colonizing the Americas):
The first Chapter entreateth of the byrth of Blanchardine, his nurssing and his bringing vp. AMongst many antient Chronicles importing the haughtie exploites of sundry nations, Lords and Princes: this story of the valorous Blanchardine deserueth greatest commendation of true and perfect magnanimitie. At the time when a generall peace concluded throughout the most part of Christēdome, when gentlemen and Noble Péeres made their returne from armes and applyed them selues to domesticall and cuntrie pastimes: There reigned a King in the Realme of Frize redoubted for manhood and prowes, abounding in goodes and possessions, reuerenced and beloued both of his subiect•… and equalls, and most happie in all his attempts [sauing in ye want of issue] to succéed him in his king dōe, wherof, bothe he and the Queene his wife were most pensiue and discontented: and by mutuall complaints greatly bewailed this misfortune. But the Queene desirous to frustrate the scandal that might aryse by reason of her ba•…ēnes: day by day, (in moste deuout and humble manner) solicited the Gods to send her a sonne, whose dayly and deuout prayers penetrating the heauens, by the permision and fauour of the Gods she conceiued and bare a sonne, whome at the christning they named Blanchardine. This vnexpected ioy bred such a content∣ment to the King and Quéene, and a comfort to all the Realm•…, that after humble thankes giuen to the Gods: feasts, banquets and all triumphes were proclaimed throughout the Realme of Friz And least the Childe (should by absence from the Pa∣rents through negligence of the Nursse) miscarie: the Queene her self vndertooke his nurssing and bringing vp. The Childe grew in beautie, proportion, wit and manners, beyond the expectation of all men. And when he was arriued to the age of discretion, he was committed to the tuition of a graue and learned Tutor to be instructed in Philosophie, by whose in∣dustrie and painful labour he soone attained to perfection: his exercises and disportes at idle times were hawking, hunting, and playing at Chesse, and in such pastimes he spent some part of his youth til his maturitie and riper age, made him desirous to follow armes and feates of chiualrie, as heerafter you shall heer.
I know I don’t hate it; I immediately imagined something that is more like Hades with a decent story and art, but even if you do find it unpalatable, with the breadth of indie games out there covering all genres (including brand new ones), there’s something for everyone—even the ol’ gaming curmudgeon. 😉
I am a sucker for soundtracks but soundtracks do cheat a little bit just because you get emotionally invested into the movie/game/tv show and have such great memories with them it is hard not to find them amazing.
Test Drive or Forbidden Friendship from the Movie How to Train your Dragon. Is the first ones that came to my mind when you say beautiful song.
The Halo theme song.
Good Riddance from the game Hades covered by Rachel Hardy. (Also Anything from Rachel Hardy. She has an amazing voice and does an amazing job covering songs IMO.)
May it be by (Enya) (yet another movie sound track Lord of the Rings. lol)
The Light in Us all (Planet Coaster)
I see this is a very weird list I have come up with. These are just the ones that came into my head first.
So we finally know what the mysterious Triple-i Initiative thing is! It’s a big gaming showcase full of announcements and new footage for upcoming games centred around triple-i games and studios (big indies)....
Yeah, III was basically coined to differentiate one-man / low budget indies from high budget indies like Hades, which was made by 20+ people, and a much higher budget, when compared to “normal” indies.
I was going to say replaying but I feel like that limits the question to games like Prey or Fallout New Vegas that have endings and games like The Sims 2 or Cities Skylines where you can play indefinitely end up excluded....
Whatcha all been playing? Been kind of sick this week so I took it easy but still found some time to get some Isaac runs in. Also started up rogue legacy 2 again which is a good time
I was "done" with Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, but a day later the first patch dropped, so I gotta go back to it.
Death Must Die was my replacement for DRG, but the game is a bit boring, so I'll wait for more patches. It's basically Hades but Vampire Survivors. So far there are five characters in the game, but four are very similar. The different spells or upgrades are also not really too interesting and barely change the gameplay, so most runs feel the same. I hope further updates can improve the game.
Then, I started both Horizon: Forbidden West and Dragons Dogma 2 on PC, but right now I'll stick with DD2. The game is basically what I remember DD1 being, but with a fresh coat of paint, for better or worse. Back when I played the first game, I had a great time for like 70 hours, but by the end, I never wanted to see the game again (and never played the DLC). Even though it's been eight years since then, I still feel a bit burned out, so seemingly so few changes don't really help. I started out as the mage and just recently switched to the sorcerer, but imma be honest, it's pretty boring. I'll give it a bit longer, since I barely got any spells right now. The archer and thief look more fun, so I might give these a shot, if the giga wizard doesn't improve things. I also gotta say, the Pawns are some of the most annoying NPCs in any video game ever. They spew one of their dozen different voice lines every 20 seconds, which is just awesome. You can mute their audio, but then you might also miss useful callouts like when they find a chest or info about enemies. The subtitles for their lines would of course still clutter the screen though.
I’m not usually a huge fan of rogue-likes, but I’ve enjoyed a few, like Hades. I bought Balatro last week and have been absolutely smashing it ever since then. I love the way the game works, each run being so different even within the same framework, and the feeling when your build starts to go off is so incredibly...
Lunacid - King’s Fieldalike with a great atmosphere and PS1 era esthetic. Fun hidden secrets (sometimes a little too obscure, but whateva, still fun) that I fell in love with as a fan of the OG From Soft King’s Field/Eternal Ring games.
Signalis - A thought provoking horror sci-fi game about an android trying to find their missing ship captain on a far away planet. I don’t want to stay more to stay away from spoilers, but this plays homage to OG Resident Evil and other early survival horror games from a top down perspective.
Pyre - A sports game and VN hybrid made by Supergiant games. Not as popular (At least I think) as Hades, Transistor, and Bastion. Just fantastic story and world building with characters that you end up feeling so passionately for by the end of the game. Just a wonderful game and probably my favorite Supergiant game barely in front of Hades.
Dusk - A retro FPS ala Quake 1 era games. The game that kicked off the newest resurgence of “Boomer shooters” and is one of the best out there. Wonderful secrets and level design along with some solid atmosphere and scares by those New Blood boys that I love so much.
Shovel Knight - Growing up on games like Mega Man and Duck Tales, Shovel Knight feels like it was made specifically for me.
Celeste - One of my favorite gaming experiences. Great story, great gameplay, and hard as fuck. Incredible accessibility options also.
Recettear: An Item Shop - I don’t know anyone else who has played this game but it’s so damn good. I love it.
Stardew Valley - The way ConcernedApe continues to add free content to this game makes this easily one of the best values in gaming, but this game would still be great even if content updates had stopped a long time ago. Have to play on PC though for mods; the default walking speed makes the game unplayable for me.
I also put years into a now-defunct multi-user-dungeon called Arythia, but that’s kind of it’s own whole thing so I don’t think that counts.
edit: I can’t believe I forgot to include Hades, which is literally one of my all-time favorite games.
Outer Wilds and Hollow Knight share the spotlight for greatest games of all time. Both are as close to perfect as it gets.
Bastion gets an honorable mention. Not sure if SuperGiant Games is considered indie anymore, especially now that Hades hit big, but I love their early work.
