I’m considering switching to linux but I’m not a computer savvy person, so I wanted to have the option to switch back to windows if unforeseen complications (I only have 1 pc). Is it just a download on usb and install? And what ways can I get the product key or “cleaner” debloated versions.
Objection. I ran Ubuntu for 6 years but returned to Windows because too many things were just a little bit too odd, too off, too hands-on-config-files.
To be fair, the newer versions of Windows suck hard. 10 was really bad, 11 is horrific. I dream of going to Debian some day.
I changed out the burner tubes in the propane grill. The first set of burners I got did not have adjustable air inlets. Ordered some different ones and the difference is surprising.
The choices they made in material for my grill are weird. All the big parts and supports are rust resistant. Every single screw is the cheapest, shittiest one they could find and immediately started rusting. Hope the dollar they saved is worth me never buying grills from them again.
This is gonna sound odd, but have you cleaned out the USB port lately? Weird stuff happens when pocket lint collects in there. I thought mine had a dead port until I picked out (with a non-conductive toothpick) the lint I didn’t realize had accumulated.
Just as summer vacation is getting underway, students at Columbia University in New York are left dealing with a raft of looming disciplinary charges from their participation in campus protests against Israel’s war in Gaza. But some students at the school said 11th-hour changes to disciplinary procedures are making it harder...
Indiana University has a field next to the student union (Dunn Meadow) where long-term protests have been allowed for decades. There was a big one during Vietnam, there was a semi-permanent shantytown there during apartheid and I was cooking and doing odd jobs in the protest camp during the 1991 Gulf War while still in middle school.
The day before the anti-Israel protest started, they changed the rules not allowing 24/7 protests. A bunch of students got arrested.

You’re not wrong, but it should be noted that ‘at worst 1 second slower’ means a lot more when the fastest time is under 2 seconds. Saving 1 second is kind of a big deal when you only have 3 to work with. Closing that much of a gap would be a huge win for Firefox.
Also worth noting that many of the linked tests are also not directly based on time, and the difference in benchmarking is still fairly substantial. With the exception of the singular test that it came out on top on, the best case among these benchmarks is that firefox mobile is 15-20% slower than Chrome. These benchmarks even include Mozilla’s own Kraken benchmark (where it still comes in last among these results).
Lastly, do want to say that I hope mobile firefox can catch up on these, but they’ve got a lot of work to do and the odds are stacked against them.
They weren’t incorrect, they predicted Trump had a chance to win and he made that chance happen
What they did that was stupid was oversell what an odds advantage meant for Clinton and when caught in their own mistelling of how their own reports work proceeded to make themselves look like that nerd who can’t admit that he fucked up and blames it all on other people not understanding what he was “akshualay” saying.
So… they knew the value of their own time and didn’t overwork when they didn’t have to?
This worked the other way NOT in favor of the workers. Sat down at your desk at 7:03am even though you’re not customer facing at all? Expect to be called into a conference room with your boss and your bosses boss about your attendance.
Do you work in IT and need to work off-hours to perform work requiring downtime until 2am? You better be at your desk at 7am on the dot or you’re going to get written up.
Have a doctors appointment at 3pm for an hour? You have to take vacation time for that.
There was this really odd notion that if you weren’t sitting in your chair typing, you weren’t working and would get questioned by bosses.
Most office workers could probably learn from that mindset.
Office workers would learn (or be reminded) about how hellish it was to work a minimum wage job with zero flexibility.
I mean… you didn’t say anything else, how else could you have meant it?
I was pointing out one part of the oddness of an office organization that chose to operate strictly from 7am-5pm. If you’re asking why I didn’t explain every aspect of every perspective, I’ll say it was a 30 second post on the internet, not a comprehensive peer reviewed study of workplace behavior.
I admitted my initial explanation had ambiguity that could lead the audience to arrive at an unintended conclusion. I’m not sure what more you want from me over that mea cupla. There’s no deeper motive on my part to mislead besides my admitted initial carelessness.
You even complained that them leaving on time was inconvenient when someone else dumped something in their desk after working hours.
Inconvenient to the organization, not to the worker. I was pointing out that the organization had created the situation working hours (strict 7am-5pm), yet was suffering because of how rigidly it enforced the rule. The org was shooting itself in the foot.
I noticed recently that MS Teams allows you to set a workday that defaults to 9 hours. I found that odd, but if most people in the US have a 9 hour day with a 30 min lunchbreak and two 15 minute other breaks, I guess it makes sense?
What were the technical issues that they’re referring to? I remember seeing gameplay that look clunky with odd power progression at launch(or maybe a beta), but I don’t know how it progressed from there. I’m not a Diablo-style ARPG player so I never picked it up, but can anyone fill me in?
Oddly enough, the more garlic you have to peel the easier the standard method of shaking it between two bowls works.
Another method I like is cracking the skins with a knife and then rubbing them between my hands. But this sometimes cuts my palms so it might not be for everyone.
Can I show up to their riots carrying a George Floyd sign and just feign ignorance about what’s being protested? Over/under on getting shot? (I’m white so factor that into the odds.)
I really have no affinity for either group but I do find it odd how quick Europeans are to point at American racism while ignoring or denying the existence of their own racist tendencies.
What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?
Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?
In my experience, younger people who grew up with the internet write their texts and emails as if they are instant messaging, because they grew up with AOL and MSN messenger etc when it comes to text based communication.
Older people who communicated over text before the internet only did this in one way - writing letters.
As a result their style of texting or emailing is often very long form in comparison.
When writing letters you are limited by how much room there is on a piece of paper.
This leads to using some shorthand which used to be fairly common, but has fallen out of public knowledge for younger people.
You could argue that some of the stuff that younger people email or text informally can be just as cryptic because there is entirely different shorthand that millenials and generations Y and Z use.
If you closely examine how you casually communicate with your peers of a similar age, you will notice it can be just as odd as what you experience from communicating with generations on either side of you.

with the odds being good the same data could be served at 1/20th the cost today
Gotta nitpick you there. According the Moore’s law (really more of a rule of thumb), the price of the silicon used to serve those videos should be 1/16 of what it is today. I’m not aware of any corresponding law that describes trends in energy consumption. It’s getting better for sure, but I’d be shocked if there was a 20x improvement in 6 years.
