Various automations, conveniences, and efficiencies that can ultimately save a lot of time &/or money.
1 ) sleep hygiene = a) close the roller shutters or blackout blinds at night b) open them gradually at the same time every day, play the tron soundtrack, and start brewing my coffee. c) drop the temperature by x degrees 1 hour before bedtime.
2 ) house can start growing mould under certain conditions = run the dehumidifier after x amount of time above y average humidity.
3 ) energy efficiency = a) when weather is predicted to rise above 25c, close roller shutters on sunny side of house. b) when temperature is rises above x, or drops below y, turn on air con.
4 ) security = encrypt and upload security camera footage every 5 minutes.
Etc, etc, etc. None of the above should be difficult to set up, nor insecure… We shouldn’t need to go to great lengths to automate our lives for comfort and convenience without our privacy being invaded… but in the age of surveillance capitalism, where corporations are scrambling to monetise everything we say and do, and most hardware and software vendors are actively working against us, our only solution is to tinker, hack, and patch together a multitude of disparate software and systems. Problem solving can be fun, but I’d prefer home automation to be easy and effortless.
English education has one core problem: It focuses too much on vocabulary and grammar, and not enough on production. Your average Egyptian student should know a decent amount of vocabulary (until they forget it after their exams end anyway), but they have next to no idea how to create a natural sentence or actually write a passage or essay because while we do have essay writing on the exams (I think it was removed in favor of MCQ questions a few years ago, though) it's taught as a second thought or not at all. There's also a (heavily abridged) novel taught with every school year, but rather than treating it as a vehicle of language learning teachers (and exams) focus on the actual contents, so you end up with questions like "What was character X wearing in situation Y" that make just reading Q&A summaries a much more efficient way of tackling the exam than actually reading the novel. Also almost nobody does listening or speaking unless you're lucky or rich.
As for Arabic, it's a different situation but the outcome is similar. The Arabic curriculum in Egypt is massive. There are about 5 sections, each with a ton of content that you need to memorize because the exam focuses more on content than the skills you're supposed to learn. For example in reading you have 5 or so passages whose contents (including metaphors the author used, for example) you have to memorize and regurgitate in the exam. Grammar is a little better, but it also has some issues. There's also a story but like in English the focus is on the contents and for some reason it's abridged. Writing is, like in English, an afterthought that is barely given any care in the classroom. The end result is that the curriculum does little to give students the ability or desire to read or write Arabic literature. I'm pretty sure you could get Al-Mutanabbi to take the Egyptian Arabic exam and he'd fail unless he studies about the same amount as a normal Egyptian student because of the amount of fact memorization that's unrelated to actual mastery of Arabic. Edit: If it sounds like I'm salty that's because I am.
Debian for sure is stable for a server and Arch may not be as stable.
However if we are talking about a home use, Arch is stable enough. And with up to date packages.
I rather use Arch Linux with up to date packages then Debian with 2+ years out dated packages for my daily non-server use.
You’re not taking into account the use case. It’s simplistic to say that “Arch is not stable”. It is and it isn’t, depending on use case.
The same for Debian, I can say it’s outdated, and again, it is and it isn’t, depending on use case.
If you wanna play latest games, use latest softwares and be on the edge of the latest versions, Debian sucks. If you wanna a stable rock solid server, with all packages well tested, well, Arch sucks.
Just don’t be an asshole saying that X is better than Y dismissing the use case.
All I said at the beginning was: time to try Arch Linux.
But some of you can’t live with different opinions and downvoted my comment, as well tried to refute my comment. But, well, I wasn’t even arguing, I was doing a suggestion. So, yeah, do whatever you want, I don’t care
They said “Authorized Retailer,” not that they were the actual company. They were truly selling the service, regardless of legalese around being authoritized, I’d think it perfectly okay for them to say you can pay X to get Y and as long as you receive Y (in this case ability to watch cable).
many Republican politicians are anti-Ukraine aid, and support policies that could help Russia
The anti-Ukraine-aid(as in, not giving Ukraine military aid) I can understand. Support policies to help Russia, not so much. But what I’m talking about is I frequently see these nutjobs on Twitter who praise Putin and Russia, while piling up on Zelensky and Ukrainian media resources. Usually those seem to be some kind of religious fundamentalists who think that Russia is some kind of bastion of christian and traditional values. There are even a few who actually moved to Russia and are now used as token “Americans who fled the evil woke culture” on the Russian TV and other media. What these guys are failing to realize, though, is that what they perceive as “christian and traditional values”, are actually remnants of criminal/jail culture of the 90s where prisoners would commit homosexual acts against each other to establish hierarchy, and, outside of it, excommunicate or even murder their friends, who came out as gay, out of irrational fear of same acts being done to them. The Russian Christianity… it’s more of a “Pacification & Penitence Inc.” rather than strict adherence to any particular set of of biblical doctrines. And for Putin… if there was a contest for “inventor of the most non-binding and legally undefined terms and half-measures” he’d definitely be the winner - ffs, he hasn’t even properly declared a war to Ukraine, what “strong leader” are they talking about.
What’s particularly cringe and really pisses me off though is when those guys try to flip Ukrainian patriotic symbolism, e.g. chanting “Slava Russia”, wearing Russian flags, or making fun of Ukrainian casualties - in Russian culture, wearing a literal flag as a cape is disrespectful, “Slava X! [to] Y slava!” originates from a nazi chant and doesn’t really make sense in Russian language, while the last one is just plain distasteful.
The recall covers certain Models Y, S and X from the 2023 model year. All are equipped with “Full Self-Driving” computer 4.0 and run software version 2023.44.30 through 2023.44.30.6 or 2023.44.100....
It’s one of the few places to keep track of new developments of covid mitigations, studies on long covid simplified for laymen, new open source air purifiers, safe and affordable far uvc developments, people calling out the CDC’s constant terrible job at public health, the fact both political parties in the US are pretending millions aren’t going to continue to die and become disabled the more we ignore covid and long covid.
Twitter and yes, TikTok, are the only places theres active people talking about this especially in ways laymen can understand and take action on. Theres some subreddits (some ive made) but i hate visiting reddit now.
Mastodon has a few people but discovery on mastodon is terrible. No one uses hashtags cuz hashtags kinda suck and nothing is filtered or recommended based on who you follow and what they like or who they follow so you have to wade through too much irrelevant stuff.
Off topic: I prefer chronological feeds but they should have a user customizable option to have some recommended posts in between the chronological timeline for discovery. The Mammoth app is doing this but only for the For You feed which is not what I want because its 90% news articles from big publications. I want a chronological timeline with some recommended posts based on parameters i set like “x likes by friends of friends”, “user was recently followed by x amount of people I follow”, “x number of posts by this user were liked by y amount of people i follow”.
I wish it had the ability to filter feeds. There’s a lot of rss feeds that have good stuff interspersed with articles that are basically ads. Like just being able to filter out “prime day” or “the top X widgets to do Y” would get rid of a lot of fluff
Okay let me start with two heavy hitters right from the get go and don’t forget these are only personal oppinions and I absolute understand if you like those games. Good for you!...
Every open world game has turned into the same “do this x times to get y reward that has no relevance whatsoever to the game”
I miss the days of games on rails. I could sit down, enjoy a game and play it through to the end in 10-20 hours. Now it seems like every game is trying to milk 100+ hours of gameplay time out of even the most basic of stories and mechanics.
Russia’s science and higher education ministry has dismissed the head of a prestigious genetics institute who sparked controversy by contending that humans once lived for centuries and that the shorter lives of modern humans are due to their ancestors’ sins, state news agency RIA-Novosti said Thursday....
Avoid biases, yes. We can say “current data supports X,” and make whatever real-world decisions we need to make, while still accepting that future data may very well completely disprove that notion. It’s bad science to say “current data supports X, so Y is wrong,” but it’s also bad science to say “Yeah, I know current data supports X, but my gut says Y is true even without data, and that’s enough for me.”
That’s what I see more and more often in society recently; people are seeing that biases are something that can’t truly be avoided, so they’re accepting them instead, allowing themselves to completely abandon data in place of biases. When you catch yourself believing something is true even when data doesn’t currently support it, forgive yourself, as you’re human, but don’t allow yourself to continue believing that thing.

Words to live by, OP, “scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds”
Fascism, a far right wing ideology, is often described as “capitalism in decline,” and is what happens when capitalism desperately clings to any hope of maintaining itself, normally by calling itself back to some mythologized, fictional version of a perceived golden age.
Its also worth noting that we use the terms left and right to described to describe relative position within the overton window (the narrow stretch of “acceptable” politics within a given society) of our current politics, as in, biden is left Bush is right, et cetera, but in a larger view of the political spectrum both the democrats and republicans are right wing parties. There isn’t an objective defintion of who is left/right, but for a lot of people, the dividing line is capitalism itself. If you support capitalism, you’re right wing, if you’re a socialist, communist, or anarchist, you’re a left winger. If, by some miracle, capitalism were to die out tomorrow and every country was some flavor of socialist the dividing line would change to some new metric, and x would be left while y would right. It’s a short hand expression not a hard and fast rule.
Trusting other peoples identification and authorizattion isnt about sharing accounts and passwords. If user A of server X want to log in at server Y, server Y asks server X if it knows this user A. If so server X handles the password/mfa check and just gives the green light to server Y.
Gaming, like all software development, becomes plagued by popularized anti-patterns every so often. Remember back in like 2010 and every. single. fucking. game. had unskippable, frustratingly difficult, often instantly fatal should you fail them, quicktime events? Because I fucking remember. And now those are nowhere, because they’re terrible. And, yes, the use of AI is not a game design pattern so much as it is a development tool that will be used to fastforward development and decrease costs around, presumably, asset generation, but to some extent that was always going to happen. Any time a tool comes about that fundamentally reduces human labor, it always sees widespread adoption. Eventually it’ll be industry standard, and it’ll be…fine. It’ll suck for people with aspirations around graphic design and 3D modeling, but those are just the first places there will be cuts. Eventually you’ll have the physics engines, game systems, state management, etc. and other core components of game design automated via AI processes, which will kill a shitload of dev jobs. And eventually the people who make these AI game engines will, instead of selling to a studio who will parameterize the AI with prompts, will automate the prompting process with AI itself, so instead of selling to studios, they’ll just have an AI service that will take your description for a game that you want, run it through a bunch of canned AI subroutines and it’ll crap out a boutique game of your design that they technically own and have full copyright over and which is just incredibly derivative of a ton of other IP - imagine every single game being Palworld, “like X crossed with Y with a bit of A and B thrown in.” That’s right: eventually the end user will design the games themselves. A world in which you never have to consume any game, or probably eventually any media of any kind, beyond the one you already liked and wanted. You’ll never have to be challenged more than you would like or experiment with different forms of media. It’ll be a brave new world, filled with brave new games.
EDIT : It seems as no one understood what i was talking about and maybe its my fault for not elaborating . I always thought chicken was a metaphor for this paradox and not really meaning chicken as a specific spiece . So my question is how did the ancestor of chicken came to be if it was born (egg) wouldn’t it need a parent or...
This is not correct. At no point can the offspring in a single generation be differnet enough to be called a different species.
I'm not saying we should call it a different species but if we're saying species Y is the direct descendant of species X, then, we can imagine a dividing line, and the line must always begin with an egg because eggs are different from their parents but adults are not different from the egg they started off as.
In reality things change very slowley over a large amount of time and there a no clear transition points.
After scuttling a months-long search for a new host, the Paramount Global network said it had enlisted Jon Stewart, who presided over the late-night mainstay’s most popular era, to serve as its host on Monday nights throughout the 2024 election cycle and to run the program. He is expected to oversee the program through 2025....
Agreed. He had big shoes to fill, and I don’t know that anyone except maybe Colbert could’ve actually done it. He did have some good moments though, I remember a brief segment where he questioned why the US always seems to make things into an X vs Y dynamic, instead of X and Y.
“Why does it have to be cat people and dog people? Why can’t we just love both of them?!”
My takeaway is that it’s only original Rogue fans that care about the delineation of the terms. Is there a modern (i.e. post 2000s game) that matches the definition of a roguelike as given in the article?
Well, a lot of that boils down to actually “putting in the effort” to have sane-ish distinctions (the bar is low). You’ll see similar arguments from the milsim crowd, for example. Same with a lot of flight sims where there are generally pretty well understood criteria for the different subtypes (even if it is a mess to find a way to refer to stuff like “Lock-On” that is not “arcadey”…). This isn’t “Well, it has a level up animation so I guess it is an RPG”. This is “It meets criteria X, Y, and Z so it is a roguelike. It meets only x and y, so it is a roguelike. Why do you keep bringing up Operation Flashpoint?”
Contrast that with something like FPSes where you can vaguely distinguish the different eras but there is a lot more bleedover to the point of (fucking stupid and borderline offensive name aside…) not actually being sure if DOOM 2016 is a “boomer shooter” because of the design decisions… even though DOOM is the gold standard for both 2016 and stuff like Dusk (actually Quake was, but DOOM markets better).
Like, I assume most of the crowd are too young to remember but there were actually REALLY big arguments over “MMO” back in the day. Maybe we all remember the question of “So… is Destiny an MMO?”. But there were a LOT of arguments over Guild Wars 1. Because it looked like an MMO and it even progressed like an MMO but… it was Diablo 2 with a fancy skin for the IRC chat room between instances. And a lot of people (kind of rightfully…) blame Guild Wars 1 for the mess that has resulted in “Diablo 4 is my favorite MMO”.
Which, getting back to Roguelikes/lites… as long as you listen to WHY something is not a roguelike, it is a really good distinction. If the reason involves progression mechanics then you almost immediately know if you care. And if it becomes one about aesthetics, you know nobody, not even the person bringing it up, really cares.
This is always the answer. “How do we solve x in y industry?” Make the fucking corpos responsible for their own asses and it will get fixed. If it costs them more money to be breached they will do everything they can to not allow that.
Too many of the potential jurors said that even if the defendant, Elisa Meadows, was guilty, they were unwilling to issue the $500 fine a city attorney was seeking, said Ren Rideauxx, Meadows' attorney.
There’s a variety of reasons a juror can be rejected, with one of them being “the juror is not willing to follow the law, as written”. This seems to be what’s happening here, the law says that if a person does X, the penalty is fine Y, and these jurors are saying “I would not issue fine Y even if you prove they did X.”
To an extent, this is the system working they way it’s supposed to, one of the checks on unreasonable laws is being unable to find people willing to enforce them in good conscience.
Because in yanks number out of ass 87.74% of threads of “why use X? Linux has Y, it’ll do everything you want”
Ardour/LO/etc are great for what they are and have their uses, but there are some apps that just aren’t available on Linux and the claimed alternatives really don’t work.
Not to dismiss the seriousness of the story, but the term, “rails against,” is as annoying as headlines that use “X slams Y.” It means nothing and is only there for the eye catch and click bait.
I know the point is to get peoples attention, but stuff like that only makes me roll my eyes and assume an idiot was in charge of the article.

My partner and I use a pinned issue as our grocery list on our git repo for managing our household. All running on top of a self-hosted gitea instance.
Great for being able to create git issues for honey-dos as well as having automations for creating issues for recurring tasks.
“Hey we need to take X to the vet for Y sometime next week” “Oh yeah, can you go ahead and put in a ticket?” Amd vice versa
Eh, for game-released-in-a-disappointing state there’s always two points for me:
A personal thing, learn to not buy day 1 or even before. Let other people do that, then avoid ever putting yourself in a frustrated position by simply never buying the broken/unfinished game to begin with. Money - and time - better spent on other hobbies, or well, other games.
On a specific level, I always feel that just saying “I’m sorry, but because of X, Y and Z I don’t feel like the game is in any shape to be worth the money asked” and then refunding it is the only real proper feedback to go about it. Voice your reasoning, then undo the purchase to withhold the money. That’s more than enough brain space wasted on an unfinished game you’re not enjoying, anyways.
Oh yeah, and for behaviour detection of this, it’s kinda annoying they don’t detect it because I don’t think it would be difficult to do this (either from a problem solving perspective or the amount of computational power that would be required).
Just track the x and y deltas and their derivative over time (in this case, the derivative is just the difference between the current sample and the previous one, so no calculus required, just a subtraction per sample). Then check if they are continuous. X and y deltas are velocity, which must be continuous because the mouse is a physical object and subject to inertia. Acceleration should also be continuous because of the limitations of our muscles (though if your mouse bumps your keyboard or your hand is moving and bumps your mouse, you can see natural acceleration that isn’t continuous, but these wouldn’t directly preceed a successful shot at a target).
Then just watch for spikes in either of those. A better cheat program could smooth the spikes, but it slows down the capability of the aim bot.
You don’t need to run an X server on the headless server. As long as the libraries are compiled in to the client software (the GUI app), it will work. No GUI would need to be installed on the headless server, and the libraries are present in any common Linux distro already (and support would be compiled into a GUI-only app unless it was Wayland-only).
I agree that a GUI-only installer is a bad thing, but the parent was saying they didn’t know how it could be done. “ssh -X” (or -Y) is how.
Home automation - why?
