I don’t know, but it sure is odd that a motorcycle manual is attempting, and apparently failing, to give a physics lesson, so I’m going to suggest that it’s the motorcycle manual the demons that whisper into their ears at night use when they ride their motorcycles over to their bedroom.
Same. I bought stock in it when it IPO’d because he made a good road map that his engineers could get to and they made great use of government funding. He largely just seemed like an awkward nerd. The Thai cave rescue was the instance where I thought there was something seriously wrong with the dude. He decided to have a sub built even though nobody asked him to and the thing did not fit. Then he called one of the rescuers a pedophile. And not just as an odd insult; he doubled down on the claim. Since then it just seems he has been continually seeking attention.
As for the company, their poor quality control was understandable 10 years ago but it’s still pretty fucking bad and I honestly think he is a big part of that. I recall watching a documentary a long time ago where the producer was talking to Musk about some of the challenges of making the Roadster. They were in a warehouse that had a couple dozen that had been inspected. Musk looked at the notes on one and it had a pretty major issue that would likely pop up but he was going to ship it anyway. The producer looked at it and noticed that they were looking at the car that would be going to him. Musk very awkwardly backpedaled. It sends that willingness to overlook major flaws has not left.
It also happens when the hosts file is messed up and the system can’t resolve its own hostnames. Opensuse used to be pretty notorious for doing something odd to the hosts file by default that really only affected Firefox.
Edit: the increased security they’re trying around the browser might also be triggering that local resolution issue
Book 21 of 2024 was Neil Stephenson’s Seveneves. As always for the author long and detailed, but What a fun read! But i feel part three was almost a second book. Even the style was subtly different. Far too many lengthy descriptions of the technology distracting from the narrative. As if Skylark had returned, but instead of Seaton dazzlingly making everything happen just because, Stephenson had to prove to us that these things were quite possibly not some wild shit he had made up such as Smith did a century ago
Still though, who needs a moon, and why would we think capsules in the ocean might be any different from capsules in space.
@franksting@bookstodon loved Seveneves. Probably the book I think of most, since I'm reminded of it every time I look at the moon. As for Part 3, it does have an odd "and now it's a D&D campaign" vibe.
I think the best way to go is probation, enforced with some sort of suspended sentence. If he violates the terms of his probation, the suspended sentence kicks in and he goes straight to Rikers for a few months. It reinforces the point that the crimes may not warrant jail time, but his attitude definitely does. And leaves the whole thing up to his own actions.
And the probation terms will probably not be that onerous. Most probation officers simply make sure their charges are still gainfully employed, and are obeying laws. But Trump is a political candidate and NFT salesman, so we all know he has money coming in. Maybe they ask about his travel plans, which his team can easily give. Maybe they ask him about his medications and make him pee in a cup. Maybe they make him do some community service, which he will spin into campaign stops.
The probation process for Trump will be purely performative, but it is an important performance. It will be all about whether he recognizes that the NYC criminal justice system now has some oversight over him. If he does not, and does not cooperate with his probation officer (who, odds are, has heritage from one of those countries he doesn’t like), he will end up in Rikers, purely due to his ability to not listen to people he doesn’t like.
On 29 June 1950, the United States defeated England 1–0 in a World Cup group match at Estádio Independência in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil.
The odds were 3–1 the English would win the Cup, and 500–1 for the U.S.
Newspaper headlines in most World Cup nations trumpeted the shocking upset, except ironically in the United States and England. There was only one U.S. journalist at the World Cup: Dent McSkimming of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch; he could not persuade the newspaper to pay for the trip, and had taken time off work to cover the event.[6]: 4 McSkimming’s report of the match was one of the few to appear in a major U.S. newspaper;[6]: 141 [17] some other journals carried agency reports of the match.[18]
Same! I didn’t even have a computer till the year I graduated high school because they cost too much then. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of people had them. We were the odd family in the neighborhood. Not that anyone cared. Once I got one, the only social media type stuff that I remember using was AIM, Photobucket, and shudder LiveJournal. I couldn’t imagine navigating the internet today where everyone has figured out exactly how to exploit you for everything without you even knowing because you are too young to understand still.
What an odd comment. Literally no one but that MAGA couple cares if they get their exact same guns returned, this is about having their privilege to own firearms restored after pointing guns at peaceful protestors.
What an odd thing to say… For one, “slippery slope” is literally the name of the logical fallacy you’re doing here.
But also, think about what you’re saying for a moment. How does accurately describing a person’s behavior dehumanize them? Are we just supposed to never acknowledge shitty behavior in others?
It’s kind of the opposite… I’ve never heard an animal described as “deplorable”. I’m not sure they’re capable of it? So if anything, the term is humanizing.
I have a feeling that the same NRA that has been oddly silent on the subject of Hunter Biden’s gun charge will make a very big deal about it if they do.
“We all know what to do, but we don’t know how to get re-elected once we have done it.” – Jean-Claude Juncker
You’ve got this odd situation where people don’t actually realise how bad this is, because if it was really bad then the governments would actually do something about it, but the governments know that if they do what is needed, a lot of people will be substantially poorer, and then they’ll get voted out and replaced with somebody who brings back all the petrol cars and the toxic shit being dumped into rivers.
Technically yes. But the odds on a properly built trunk line getting saturated by a random neighborhood aren’t great. Unless of course they’ve never upgraded that line in 20 years…
Young voters in key election battlegrounds are being recommended fake AI-generated videos featuring party leaders, misinformation, and clips littered with abusive comments, the BBC has found....
A spokesperson for TikTok told the BBC that it had increased its investment “in efforts to ensure reliable information can be found on TikTok”, launching a “UK Election Centre with a fact-checking expert” and adopting an “industry-leading AI labelling technology”.
I doubt this will move the needle. Ultimately TikTok was not built for news & politics specifically, and it seems like a robust fact-checking system would lead to less engagement overall. So it’s at odds with their primary objective
In the UK we’re mostly using metric with the odd exception (we still love a pint of beer), one of which is that speeds are measured in MPH. It’s not really a big deal, there aren’t many customers between miles and kilometres and anything less than a km is still usually measured in metres.
This comment is bizarre to me. Is 35 mph fast or slow? Because it is the same as 55 kph ( km/h ).
55 km/h is an odd speed though it is true. Most towns in Canada for example, the default speed limit is 50 km/h. Highway speeds are more like 100 km/h.
I have this problem, as well. Distorted amplification, song lyrics, speech against loud background noise? Forget it. Oddly, I got a pair of Shokz bone-conducting headphones recently, and noticed that I have been understanding lyrics for the first time in songs that I’ve been listening to for 30+ years. (I should really listen to that song about how “Shareef don’t like it; Fuck the passport, fuck the passport.”

To add to this: Netanyahu has been on trial for corruption for years, and he’s been using the war as an excuse to avoid holding elections, which he would lose.
When the war ends, Bibi is going to jail. And would you look at that? He’s in a permanent war! What are the odds.
For me, a two party system seems really odd too. The flipside though, is having like 18 parties that all represent something, which takes way more cooperation and finding middle ground. This might seem good on paper, but can sometimes lead to indecisiveness or an unwillingness to take unpopular decisions. In the long run, that might cause a country to slowly fall behind on various topics due to a lack of vision.

I grab a cup coffee from a shop and it’s ruined because the barista is wearing cologne or perfume that inevitably has gotten on the cup and it’s all I can smell when I take a sip. I have serious issues with fragrances. Artificial fragrances in particular (i.e. most ones) but even essential oils get to me after a while. When I’m around cologne, air freshener, deodorant, shampoo/conditioner fumes, I can taste it for quite a while. It’s completely vile. Extended exposure makes my eyes red, my lips swell a bit, and just a little makes me start oddly salivating. I guess it’s some sort of allergy, maybe MCAS, but this sort of thing is very difficult to get diagnosed. Some doctors have acted like I have some sort of uh… misphonia but for smells, but no, I can detect scents quite accurately. One reason I may be sensitive is I’m not completely swamped in 10 different fragrances 24/7 like most people.
The only thing that really works is to wash my nose out with water. Not super sanitary, but it’s better than salivating and tasting perfume for an hour. I have found that taking antihistamines reduces my sensitivity… I can still detect the fragrances, but get less of a reaction. That’s a clue. Oh, and also I have 3 different autoimmune disorders… I’ve asked around and the only people I’ve gotten a “yes, that happens to me too” response from are people with MS.
