Hacker news works because it has a specific perspective. You basically just get the capitalist tech crowd and unapologetically so.
It’s not perfect, but I like that it’s roughly apolitical (as in, free of world events, politics, and X slammed for Y articles). I understand that capitalist tech is inherently political, but it’s not where to go to talk politics.
What “political linux distributions” exist? I use debian and used Ubuntu before and don’t remember anything political about it (At least by going by the how most people perceive something as political, That is the state should do X or not Y).
I’d like to know other non-US citizen’s opinions on your health care system are when you read a story like this. I know there are worse places in the world to receive health care, and better. What runs through your heads when you have a medical emergency?...
How can an US doctor charge like 10 times the prices on our side of the pond ?
There’s an unspoken assumption that when doctors quote a price, the insurance companies will widdle that down to a fraction of that amount when they pay out, so if a procedure actually costs $X.00, doctors will bill the insurance for $X * Y, so insurance actually ends up paying what it actually costs.
The side effect is that we pay co-pays or deductibles or non-100% coverage amounts based on what insurance was billed, not what the procedure actually cost. It’s actually cheaper in some cases (especially with regards to medications) to not use insurance because then, we’ll get billed what it actually cost, not the grossly inflated amount, and if our coverage is only, say, 50% for a given procedure, or if we have a co-pay on medication, we end up paying less. Meanwhile we’re still paying the insurance companies for the coverage we’re not taking advantage of. The whole system is fucked beyond belief. We know it, we just can’t do anything about it.
“Vote for the politicians who want to fix it!” only works if they actually do want to fix it, and will follow through if elected.
There was a documentary I saw once where they used the best estimates for how long it took the Great Pyramid and how large the work force was and then scaled it down. Like if it took a work force of X people Y number of years to build the Great Pyramid, then a few dozen guys would be able to build a two storey tall pyramid in two months with the same technology.
So they did that. And despite being inexperienced with the ancient technology and having to figure out how to push these massive stone blocks on rollers and make the corners around a spiral ramp winding around the pyramid, they got their little pyramid done on time. The math all checks out on people being able to build the pyramids provided they had a large enough workforce and enough time to do it.
Yes the Pyramids are impressive but it’s because it took a lot of work over a lot of time to build them. But it required no special technology. Just a lot of dudes pushing heavy blocks on rollers up a ramp over many years.
Distro agnostic packages like flatpaks and appimages have become extremely popular over the past few years, yet they seem to get a lot of dirt thrown on them because they are super bloated (since they bring all their dependencies with them)....
Debian 12 came out last June. In December the version of docker that’s shipped by Debian stopped being supported, and is now like 4 major releases behind nix. Debian won’t update it for at least a year and a half unless there’s some major security patch.
Besides that, when Debian 13 gets released and I reinstall, I can just clone my dotfiles and use a single line to reinstall all of the packages I need. All of the packages are in a single list, and so there’s no more need to run health checks because I forgot to reinstall some random editor dependency for a language I use once a year. If I added it to the list it’s going to be on every machine running that list.
Location-aware reminders is almost literally all I want from an assistant these days. “Remind me of x next time I’m at y, or by z time at the latest.” Is this an impossible task? I can imagine how I would code it, but maybe I’m missing something.
Lmao, done that before. You do have to worry about the resolution of the textures when changing the model’s size, though.
Also, I’ve made small caves systems and mountains like this, before slapping myself for not remembering terrain generation.
Edit: this is a bit of tangent, but I’m super excited to see more boulders rendered using polycam. Generally, the models are a bit janky and never have straight polygons (along the x,y,z axis) So things like furniture and corridors won’t work. Boulders though, it’s perfect!
Quite the unpopular opinion, but I just wanted to post this to show the silent majority that we still exist. The red hat funded multi year long shill campaign has proven to be quite...
Though true, phones can also go down, I believe the point would be redundancy in case X works but Y does not. Though as someone else mentioned HAM is a better solution anyway, I need to finally get my technician’s license.
Nintendo put the buttons in their order 2 decades before the Xbox even existed, if anything Microsoft is putting buttons on the wrong way around. Unless of course you’re referring to something other than the order of X Y A B.
I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not, ngl… if you’re being serious though then why do you suppose that having B be above A and Y be above X is the “correct” way? The way I see it, having A be the interact button seems more natural than having B be the interact button, and the former is how it’s set up on games like BOTW that use Nintendo controllers. Tbh though I actually wish bottom was X, left was A, right was B, and up was Y. An abomination to modern gamers, I’m sure, but it seems the most sensical considering the cultural perception of the symbol X imho.
Also Xbox isn’t the entire game industry… Playstation doesn’t even use the same symbols, and I can’t think of any relevant consoles which use similar controllers to those 3. The only “official” controllers I can think of that use the Xbox order are ones made for specifically Xbox/Microsoft. I guess also the Sega Dreamcast? But that’s more because Microsoft played a large role in making the Dreamcast, and later based the Xbox heavily off of Sega consoles/controllers, and the button layout just came along with everything else. They didn’t want to conflict with Nintendo and potentially get into legal issues based off of controller button layout, so that was the easiest route.
That being said, I’m so used to the Xbox controller layout that using Nintendo controllers gives me an aneurysm because Xbox switches the buttons. Any time I emulate a Nintendo game I just use my Xbox One controller and a mod to display the input tips differently. But that’s not anyone’s fault.
Yes, of course. But afaik the idea of flatpak is, that every program has a list of libraries and versions of them that it wants. So when program X was built with libfoo version 1 and program Y needs libfoo version 2, you basically download the library twice.
When you go through the package manager, you just download the current version that’s in the repository. This can lead to problems when a program expects some functionality that has since been deprecated, but I never actually had issues with that.
Also, a lot of the libraries a flatpak downloads are already installed on the system, just in a different version, I noticed.
I’m on a home computer that I use by myself, mind you. So if something breaks, it’s just my own problem. If I were to use software in production or even just administer the computer of a tech-unsavy relative, I’d likely use flatpaks or similar for stability and security reasons.
While what you say is true, the “portals” were an afterthought, an imposition to developers and a cumbersome and poorly documented solution. Just like the theming and most other things.
Instead of bluntly blocking things why can’t Flatpak just simulate a full environment and just prompt the user whenever some application wants to read/write to file / unix socket at some path? A GUI capable of automatically enumerating those resources and a bunch of checkboxes like "app X and Y both have access to socket at /var/run/socketY would also solve most of the issues.
Well, yes. The Wikipedia article I linked does indeed say that this is a hypothesis, which means it hasn’t been conclusively proven yet. But it does also list a number of reasons that lead to this hypothesis being proposed, and there’s a long-ish paragraph on the research that has been done on it. But yes, as long as it’s a hypothesis, it’s still in the realm of speculation.
It seems however that your experience does somewhat back that up, judging by the “if you can find a buyer”. Basically, what I’m saying is, that if depends on or determines whether an artwork falls into the uncanny valley. If you can find one, it was on the other side of it. If you can’t, then it was in it.
Basically, picture the graph from that article, but instead of “human likeness”, we label the x-axis “artistic appeal”, and the y-axis “amount sold for”. Get rid of the dotted line, and on the solid line we replace “stuffed animal” with “broad appeal” and “corpse” with “niche appeal that doesn’t sell”, and the far end of it we label “niche appeal that DOES sell” and place it much higher up, to where “healthy person” is. Hope that makes sense.
When you say “make it do x and y” who should be the person that does it? Without raising enough awareness of the problem, change will not happen. The only way for it to happen is that enough people is pissed off and changes brands.
Yes, but submitting a manipulated screenshot in court is a whole different type of fraud and can carry whole different types of penalties than just claiming X happened when it was Y, so very reasonably puts the onus back on the company to look through their logs and try to prove what's in your screenshots didn't happen that way.
I used to think that helping my other dumb grad mates with installing Linux made me look cool and I would be accepted. On the contrary, I looked like an idiot, now that I think of it. i became that weirdo support tech kid for the idiot professors, who could not tell the difference between Java and Javascript.
I guess the worst part is that people will eventually take advantage of you… and demand for more and more hours of your free support, hold whatever you installed against you like “after you did X… Y stopped working” etc. At the end of the day if you’re proving free support it must be easy, quick why wouldn’t they ask for more.
In their heads your efforts / help doesn’t provide any value and if by any chance one day they are in a situation where you could bill them or someone for tech support they would rather call any other random tech support guy or company instead of calling you - after all they’re looking for a “professional” now :)
I said “that argument goes both ways” meaning “my candidate would have won if X, Y, and Z happened” is always valid regardless of the candidate.
You can’t rewrite the past, so you’re inventing a hypothetical/fictional scenario based on your opinion. In a fictional scenario, anything is possible. Your argument was “if more people voted for Gore, he would have won” and I countered with “if more people voted for Nader, he would have won.” You can’t claim Gore was the best choice because the best choice is the one who wins the election.
In a democracy, it is obviously more fair if you compromise than everyone else compromises. You either don’t believe in democracy, or you’re happy with things never getting better.
What a joke. The “you” here is the entire American public while “everyone else” is a small handful of wealthy, powerful individuals.
Can you explain how continuing to elect corporate Democrats makes things better? Are we better now than 10 years ago? Are we better than we were 20 years ago? There’s obviously a quality of life trend here, and it hasn’t trended up in quite a long time. You’ll predictably place the blame solely on Republicans even though Democrats make up 50% of that equation. Republicans sure don’t seem to have the same issue passing their legislation. Why do you think that is?

Which is why most rockets today use aluminum for their fuel tanks, not steel.
And you’ve just accidentally stumbled into the Rocket Equation! My favorite.
So you want to make a rocket with enough energy to get to orbit. Okay so my engine puts out X amount of thrust at sea level. I’ll need Y fuel to get to orbit. But because the fuel weighs something, now I need 2 engines to lift the weight of the fuel and tanks. But because I have 2 engines, now my craft weighs more and I need more fuel to feed both engines. This cycle repeats until you can either balance them, or decide to say fuck it and move over to building bridges.
One way you can balance the rocket equation is by making the dry, or empty, weight of your vehicle lighter. Now you can lift more fuel on the engines you have and get higher and faster.
So again, why the hell are they using one of the most dense building materials to make up most of the rocket. Sure manufacturing is cheaper and easier, but that only counts if the thing can actually reach orbit and be useful.
I am not trying to degrade the conversation, but I know how they usualy go. What I am saying is I feel that there is a fundimental lack of understanding of the geoplolitical interists of russia, and not only that, it would be the simpliler solution to assume that Putin is speaking honestly when he says he would prefer to work with Biden, even if that reasoning is as simple as he thinks biden has a better chance of winning and saying this now will make deplomacy easier in the future. I think it is a bit bold to just jump to the conclusion that because Putin has said X he really means Y, and it feels much more like the world view you subscribe to requries putin and the Russian Federation to want Y so no matter what is being said you will make it so it really means he belives Y.
