not OP but similar situation. My Linux desktop is just more snappy, despite being 5 years old (and the work Win11 laptop brand new). I already have customized with my shortcuts and apps. I don’t have to listen to the fan spinning up every time I open a new window (exaggerating a bit, but not much). Also I am not tied to work filters. If I want to read the news online for 5 minutes in a coffee break I don’t risk being monitored and potentially evaluated. But really, I’ve been a Windows and Linux user for 20-odd years. I’ve always found that Linux installed on the same hardware of Windows is just smoother and faster. Windows is getting so much bloatware (from MS or enterprise apps) that it doesn’t even have a fighting chance.
Watching others having fun together oddly helps me a bit. I might binge a youtube channel like Corridor Crew, for example. Sometimes I even prefer being “a fly on the wall” because I don’t have to participate and be drained of energy. I also don’t have to worry about feeling rejected or offending anyone (and thus no “social hangover”).

Hello all, sorry for such a newbish question, as I should probably know how to properly partition a hard drive, but I really don’t know where to start. So what I’m looking to do is install a Debian distro, RHEL, and Arch. Want to go with Mint LMDE, Manjaro, and Fedora. I do not need very much storage, so I don’t think...
Warning: this is definitively doable, but messier than it looks like. I’d recommend you to partition it manually, before installing any distro, like this:
one partition per distro. For sizes check their requirements. Given 500GB I’d probably reserve 60GB for each, perhaps a bit more if I know that I’ll install a lot of stuff in that distro.
one swap partition, that’ll be accessed across distros. Optional if you have 16GB+ of RAM.
use the leftover space for a “storage” partition, for personal files that you won’t save in someone else’s computer (i.e. the cloud). That allows you to mess with the distros without risking your personal files.
Don’t worry too much on getting the space right though - if necessary you can always resize a few partitions after installation. It’s a bit of a bother though.
Do not share /home across distros, it’s simply more trouble than it’s worth. Instead, mount that “storage” partition in each distro, inside your /home/[$username] directory.
Another thing that you might want to consider is virtualisation. Odds are that you won’t use a lot of those distros in your everyday, and that you’re just curious about their differences. In that case, consider installing one of them, install Virtualbox in it, and then the other distros get installed inside Virtualbox. I’m suggesting that because it’ll use overall less space, and make distro management less messy.
Hot honey is pretty good if you’re into the whole sweet/spicy combo. In NYC there are now pizzerias serving pizza with hot honey… it sounds a bit odd but surprisingly quite good, definitely worth a try.
Crazy how pigs are as intelligent as a three year old and nobody cares when they’re killed for food but all the carnists get mad when i go looking for my next meal at the local daycare. All of a sudden low intelligence isn’t a good excuse to kill sentient beings
(/s if it isn’t obvious, i’m strongly against killing anyone from any species, especially when it’s for pleasure. And let’s be real, if you’re reading this odds are you don’t need to eat dead animals to survive, so the real reason boils down to the pleasure you get from their dead body)
I saw your edit, and we did still deal with life and death (in terms of electrical work) but probably not on the order of magnitude as /r/canning. I’m about to head to bed but at least wanted to say thank you for the kind words. I’ll find peace, but it won’t be in modding. Hell, I’ve applied to be an engineer for lemmy.world! I like working with tech better than people anyway, lol. I’ve been catching up on a backlog of games, my own home automation oddly enough, home projects that have been on hold since covid started, etc. Hope you had a fantastic holiday weekend (assuming you are in the US)!
Wil left Mastodon in 2018. The following 5 years have seen the Mastodon userbase change pretty significantly. Meanwhile the techrights site reports a self signed cert, so the odds that this site has any legitimate value whatsoever is essentially zero.
I suspect one of the canal boat people left it. Most of them seem normal enough, but you do have the odd ones with golliwogs in their boat windows, or alt-righty looking flags flying.
This is pretty nuts. I feel sorry for the guy, he just wanted to debate politics and instead had to defend why shooting the children was a monstrous act whether you could rationalise it or not... You've still shot kids.
Only found out about Hexbear the other day and it seems like an odd place. I consider myself left wing politically but these guys sound like they just want to be authoritarian. Weird
Mack Callender would be the main character. He was killed by the Pinkertons after Blackwater. The Pinkerton’s told Arthur a bit that seemed to suggest Mack went through the good ending in his final moments. Odds are he’ll witness Dutch’s first acts of madness and will be left for dead.
A human increases the odds of an accident drastically. Especially when they suddenly “come out of nowhere” while someone passing legally is trying to shift back right.
In this case? Someone is already clearly ignoring the rules of the road (if not the law). There is no guarantee they don’t end up sideswiping the ambulance, opening their door randomly, etc. Which results in more injuries… likely including the paramedics themselves.
Seems like clickbait, stirred up by the fire department.
“This delay, no matter how minimal, contributed to a poor patient outcome,” the fire department wrote.
This was written into what, the EMS call report (“records reviewed by the reporter”)?
Generally EMS reports are not a place to opine as to medicolegal causation, so this is an odd detail to include. I think EMS would report an egregious failure to yield to police. They might note in the call sheet that a vehicle delayed the trip by X seconds, but the inclusion of specific blame is just so out of place.
Further, EMS is a profession of first aid, not pathology, epidemiology, and outcomes. Especially not without reviewing medical records of the subsequent treatment and outcome at the hospital, probably even medical records from prior the event, too, they are not competent to give such an opinion.
The statement itself proves my point. This delay, “no matter how miniminal, contributed to a poor patient outcome.” Sounds like something an EMS driver would say. I’m reading hints of grandiosity and road rage, road indignation, really. Really, no matter how minimal? That’s not logical. My $0.02.
So this has been annoying for a while but got REALLY bothersome while I was debugging Armored Core 6 crashing on the first real boss fight (the answer is Proton 7.06, by the way)....
This ☝️. Every game has its own “container” of Proton and redistributables. My guess is that you have an odd install of Steam. I’d ditch what you have and migrate over to the Flatpak install.
Risk is a cop out. The people taking these “risks” are, more often than not, very wealthy and their stake in any given venture is negligible. Bezos isnt putting his livelihood on the line to start a new business. Not to mention due diligence, insurance and the ever present corporate welfare machine (bailouts, tax cuts, etc.) reduce the risk to investors to the point that is effectively useless to consider it a risk at all.
And what about the risk labor takes every day? Commuting to work in their own vehicle introduces the risk of a life altering/ending accident. If they moved to get the job they’re in they’re risking a lot. The neighborhood they live in may not be safe, their home could be poorly maintained or pose a health risk, the school their child would be going to may not be good, their boss could fire them on a whim, they could become injured due to unsafe working conditions, the company health insurance could be terrible and not cover anything, and many more risks individuals take in order to eek out a meager existence. People.get fired for bullshit all the time. It’s not just screwing up. Hell, you can be an exemplary employee and still wind up on the street due to budget cuts, mergers, or the company just disappearing one day. The worker takes on much more risk than the business owner ever will.
Instead of defending the excess and privilege of the wealthy, why don’t you ask yourself what you’re getting from this arrangement? The odds are not in your favor, and the system is designed to make it incredibly difficult if not impossible for you to access the quality of life you think you can obtain in a capitalist system

I’ve definitely got a few things at Microcenter that were obvious repackages. I bought a cpu once to find the pins covered in thermal paste. Clearly someone made a bad choice and just returned it. I believe for the most part their returned items are sold at a discount after a review but people repackage things well and some get away with returning something as unopened. If I’m spending 150 or more I just open in store to just in case I find something odd I can return it and they never question it because I never left.
This outrage is going to be had by several people who want protection of children who had monsters do a terrible thing to them and who exacerbated the situation by uploading it to the cloud, which makes sharing it easier. However, these people aren’t seeing the bigger implications of this. I don’t really think many of the people that are against CSAM scanning are against protection for children or prevention of the very thing this is designed to prevent, myself included. However, what people are against is the scanning of material on your phone (which is what Apple proposed). People don’t want pictures scanned on their phones, even if it’s only as those photos will be uploaded to the cloud. Several companies were doing the scanning after the content was placed on the cloud, which many people against the previously mentioned scanning were in favor of. Apple, who is not in favor of scanning of your cloud data, was against this, which I think is admirable.
The fact of the matter is that scanning data for any purpose is at odds with the protection of your privacy. I, for one, am in favor of privacy protection. And although at times it may seem like people are against things like the protection for children, the fact is we’re actually in favor of protection for everyone.
Scanning everyone’s photos is a clear invasion of user privacy.
Not scanning everyone’s photos means people retain privacy, and bad actors may then have content that we, as a society, agree they should not have.
These two things are at odds, so any solution is a compromise (or at least, a choice of one thing over another), and either will always be controversial. It’s not just photo scanning that falls into this, but also things like VPN usage – really, virtually anything that lets users retain privacy could also be used for nefarious purposes.
Personally, I don’t want to live in a world where everyone’s photos are scanned, because I am vehemently opposed to that level of surveillance and believe it would lead to profit motives (e.g. better ad targeting). I do hope there is another way to curb CSAM content, but ultimately I don’t see mass surveillance as viable.

I have a bit of bad news. Ventoy is not supported on Macs. Mac minis, Macbooks, just Mac hardware in general as far as I can tell.
But it’s a fact that’s buried deep into the Github notes when you go looking for support; if you’re not running a Mac there’s no way you would have known. But there it is:
But this comment especially from the repository owner was delightful after I’d already done everything suggested and more:
Ventoy actually doesn’t support Macbook. I never test it on Macbook.
You can do some try though
Lol, no. No more try, though at least this post let me know it was not user failure. But I want you to know it was a great suggestion, I did learn more along the way so it wasn’t all a waste of time, and I’ll definitely try Ventoy again when I get to non-Apple machines.
Thought I should tell you just in case you run into another Mac user. And thank you for the well wishes – we’re both nerds, so one of us disappearing into tech at odd moments is standard operating procedure around here. Happy Labor Day if you’re in the US.
