The site is a low effort Wordpress instance pretending to be a news website (very common in disinformation)
The site is roughly 10 days old (young instances are also common in disinformation websites)
There is no article author, for a “news” website… wow, what journalistic integrity. (Also common in disinfo websites)
The only online footprint that exists for the website is is a few very new social media accounts that use the same name (also, very common in disinfo websites).
It’s not “one thing”, it’s a combination of multiple things that add pile up to make the site look shady.
Now, I’ll assume you’re working with troglodyte levels of internet literacy and won’t immediately assume your actual goal is trying to spread questionable news sources. But to be honest, your replies make it challenging to give you the benefit of the doubt. Because I’m assuming you made a poor judgement call and a shared shady site in a science community, I’d like to take this time to recommend you swing by the local community college and take an introduction to internet course, maybe swing by a high school and sit in on a media literacy class.
If you’re going to try and straw man and attempt to insult, please do it with more creativity. If you won’t post credible links, at least have some originality in your comments.
But please, take those internet and media literacy courses before you try regurgitating more insults you’ve read online. If I’m going to argue with you I would like you to at least have a baseline for what a questionable “news” website looks like. Frankly I don’t have the energy to teach you something you should have learned in grade 9.

I know it’s a rude question, but it’s been on my mind… I’m wondering roughly what I should be expecting to outlay when I finish my set-up? So I’m assuming it includes things like domain names, hosting for backups, email providers, VPN, etc. What’s a good budget to set?
Self hosting is actually crazy cheap compared to any kind of corporate solution. Anybody paying for SquareSpace, for instance, could cut their cost by a factor of 20 or more with a FOSS alternative like Ghost Blog.
I know my setup is over engineered a little so I pay a bit more, but my expenses are still under $100 per year for subscription services that support the self hosting.
$2.50 per month for a VPN.
$40 per year for two VPS’s (this is what I know I overpay for since I didn’t really know how much I needed when I set it up, but the time to change it is worth more to me than the extra $10 per year).
$17ish per year for a domain name.
Plex lifetime pass (around $100 one time).
And of course, ten million dollars in man hours spent learning how to use Linux.

You know you can create an external audio track, right?
If you use a player like MPV or something like it, it will load by default the external audio file with the same base name (except the extension). For instance, if you have a video named Famous.Movie.2024.x264.AAC-GroupName.mp4 and an audio track in a file named Famous.Movie.2024.x264.AAC-GroupName.m4a, MPV will load that external audio and you will be able to seed the original file without need to remux the video and the new audio into a new file. This way you will save a lot of space.

My family immigrated to the UK from Poland when I was six. I’m 20 now, speak much better English than Polish and feel like this is my land/culture. Actually, nvidia recently announced RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation). Basically the idea is that you take an “off the shelf” LLM and then feed your local instance sensitive corporate data. It can then use that information in its responses.
So you really are “teaching” it every time you do a code review of the AI’s merge request and say “Well… that function doesn’t exist” or “you didn’t use useful variable names” and so forth. Which… is a lot more than I can say about a lot of even senior or principle engineers I have worked with over the years who are very much making mistakes that would get an intern assigned to sorting crayons.
Which, again, gets back to the idea of having less busywork. Less grunt work. Less charlie work. Instead, focus on developers who can actually contribute to a team and design meetings.
And the model I learned early in my career that I bring to every firm is to have interns be a reward for talented engineers and not a punishment for people who weren’t paying attention in Nose Goes. Teaching a kid to write a bunch of utility functions does nothing they didn’t learn (or not learn) in undergrad but it is a necessary evil… that an AI can do.
Instead, the people who are good at their jobs and contributing to the overall product? They probably have ideas they want to work on but don’t have the cycles to flesh out. That is where interns come into play. They work with those devs and other staff and learn what it means to actually be part of a team. They get to work on really cool projects and their mentors get to ALSO work on really cool projects but maybe focus more on the REALLY interesting parts and less on the specific implementation.
And result is that your interns are now actually developers who are worth a damn.
Also: One of the most important things to teach a kid is that they owe the company nothing. If they aren’t getting the raise they feel they deserve then they need to be updating their linkedin and interviewing elsewhere. That is good for the worker. And that also means that the companies that spend a lot of money training up grunts? They will lose them to the companies who are desperate for people who can lead projects and contribute to designs but haven’t been wasting money on writing unit tests.

I miss having my library fully in mp3. I started using Deezer just for convenience, and I kept only the mp3 I have for rare songs and versions. Now every time Deezer kills a song in my playlists, I regret my decision, and I’m too lazy to rebuild my mp3 library. At least Deezer keeps the name of the song greyed out in the playlist, and if it finds another instance of the same song it’s easy to replace it.
Totally feel ya on Mint. I put it on my X230 just now because I wasn’t planning on booting it up too often and didn’t want a massive update causing issues down the line. Super stable, super user friendly. I always recommend it to newcomers. Lovely experience!
Haha yeah Tumbleweed is an interesting name. Suppose it’s because it’s always “rollin’ rollin’ rollin’”. Constantly in motion!
I’d caution against it on low-data capped internet plans for instance, because it updates fairly often, sometimes 1GB or more. But also plenty of people update like once a week and it’s good. I update pretty much every day. It’s kinda compulsive for me and I like to see if anything is fixed or new. :p
So that’s one cool thing it has over *buntu and friends: Newest and shiniest features, but they’ve been tested a bit more thoroughly than on something like Arch, and if it does go bad, you can boot into a “snapshot” and wait until a newer update hopefully fixes whatever borked it.
But I haven’t had to roll back in ages. :)
I like keeping on the edge of KDE6 right now because it’s improving very quickly. Same with Wayland, even though some programs are still fussy with it. (You can have X11 and Wayland both, and choose which to use upon login)

Idk man conservatives in recent history have a pretty consistent track record of assassinations and assassination attemps on liberal and leftist politicians in the US based on their politics. Tommy Burks was outright killed by his Republican opponent less than a month before the election (Burks was one of the most conservative Democrats at the time, but he was certainly killed by a lot more conservative Republican), Clementa Pinckney (targetted in a white supremacist shooting at a primarily black church that he was the pastor of), Gabby Giffords (shot in the head by an anti-government right-wing conspiracy theory consumer).
When Republican politicians are killed now, it’s pretty much only by personal enemies/drama that is unrelated to liberal or leftist politics, or by schizophrenic/criminally insane people who also weren’t doing it over politics. Like Linda Collins (her friend killed her after being confronted for stealing money), Mike McLelland (he was killed by a former lawyer who’s theft case he prosecuted). Hell, even Ronald Reagan was shot over an actress, not over the guy’s personal political views. Ironically, Republican John Roll was killed by the right-wing terrorist targetting Gabby Giffords, he was caught in the cross-fire. I don’t think there’s even an in-office conservative Republican politician that was assassinated by a Democratic rival this century, or even a single instance of a conservative Republican being assassinated by a liberal over politics recently.
I want you to think of how frequently you hear of terrorist attacks which were committed in the name of white supremacy, christian nationalism, dicrimination against LGBT, or some other far-right bullshit, and then think of how frequently you hear of terrorist attacks committed in the name of progressive beliefs like, oh idk universal healthcare and better public transport. it’s gotta be at least like a 20 to 1 ratio, and that’s me being conservative with the amount of conservative attacks.
I just popped open an incognito window and searched “best electric cars” and checked the top ten results: all of which mentioned Tesla, and only one of which mentioned Musk. And that mention was “say what you will about…,” which is fairly noncommittal about who he is or what he does. Most people aren’t scrolling Reddit or Twitter or especially Lemmy all the time; they Google a question, and when they get the answer they think “oh, I’ve heard of a Tesla, my buddy Jeff has one” and so they go ask Jeff whether he likes it or not.
Now, in 2024, his name is probably far more recognizable. But five years ago, especially before he bought Twitter? If they did see his name, it would probably have brought associations of rockets if anything.
Or look at the Google Trends results for his name. There’s a spike in May 2020 (when his baby with Grimes was born), a slight bump in 2021 when he was on SNL, and a huge spike in 2022 when he was forced to buy Twitter. Aside from that, the interest in Tesla has always been much higher than the interest in Musk, and people have been less curious about him than about Taylor Swift (for instance).
People just don’t care about the CEOs of most companies they buy stuff from.
Google's play on Search, Ads and AI feels obvious to me.
