@thelinuxEXP@linux@Linux@debian A small update. For some reason, MX Linux has a lot of issues while installing software like RStudio, Discord etc. If I can't fix those somehow, I might hop distro again.
It might be useful for new researchers to know how a journal editor screens submissions (obviously this is my approach and so it might differ for others).
I tend to start with a cold read of the abstract. By this I mean I try to do little more than glance at the title, as titles sometimes oversell or, at least, don't help my understanding of what the paper is about.
This is also why I read the cover letter second, so I have an outline of the paper before I'm subjected to the "pitch".
I was familiar with the cover letter pitch but good to know the importance of further background and what to do with the results. Thank you for sharing.
"AI researchers such as Timnit Gebru affirm that longtermism is everywhere in Silicon Valley. The current race to create advanced AI by companies like OpenAI and DeepMind is driven in part by the longtermist ideology. Longtermists believe that if we create a “friendly” AI, it will solve all our problems and usher in a utopia, but if the AI is “misaligned”, it will destroy humanity...."
effective altruism specifically encourages wealthy people to keep their wealth to themselves, so that they can use their billionaire galaxy brains to more effectively direct that capital towards long-term good.
And how is that a bad thing? The alternative is to spend money on stuff that doesn’t work or even is actively harmful. The argument here is literally use less brain, do more pointless feelgood measures.
If, as they see it, Mars colonies tomorrow will help more people than healthcare or UBI or solar farms will today
Are we forgetting that Musk has an electric car company and used to have a solar company (since been absorbed into Tesla). He doesn’t just want to go to Mars, he does a lot of other stuff as well. Also why should billionaires be responsible for UBI and healthcare? If Musk would spend all his money on healthcare, you’d have healthcare for about three months before he is bankrupt. That kind of stuff is the governments job.
Although there are relatively few accounts on Mastodon that have follower numbers in the hundreds of thousands, it seems likely that if a well-curated BBC World News account was created, it would become one of them. And while that audience would be still be smaller than BBC's audience on other social media platforms, there are many folks here that aren't on the other sites.
@BBC_News_Labs@winstonsmith Please, please do! Right now, anyone who wants to get BBC news in their Mastodon feed has to follow bots, not an official account, and would happily follow official accounts. Not only that, when official accounts join, bot accounts try to transfer their followers over and post letting people know about official accounts (that’s what happened when Ars Technica made an official Mastodon account).
At least one news account would give you a lot more real interaction.
@kWazt Yeah but the issue is finding one site I can use every game that also doesn't have a massive delay from live so I can watch in sync with my friends
Anyone with more #BritishColumbia#GovernmentofCanada#legalities on this private medical clinic in #VictoriaBC that I was alerted about today?
Alerted by a friend who was told by her family physician that if she wanted to remain a patient that she needs to pay $1500 first.
That sounds illegal & in violation of federal health act.
Can anyone in BC please tell me more about legalities of this??
@chris I thought that was kinda illegal, when she started telling me about her/her husband's horrific & what they felt as blackmail billing.
They weren't expecting to be hit like that. She's been going to walk-ins since being told to pay $1500 to remain a patient. I'm trying to help her get a new family doc ATM. Both her & her husband are elderly & need a family doctor who will help them manage their health.
Instance folks, I'm thinking we should have some kind of helpful message to send to new accounts here. What information would you have found most helpful when you joined?
@willaful I'm still not totally sure whether I belong. I don't know the trope names, I don't quite get where the break is between romance and smut, I feel really out of place.
I made one timid overture a while back but idk.
If there is some kind of orientation space that would help so much.
@pelielios Hmmm. I was thinking more about specifically adjusting to mastodon. An orientation space for the romance genre itself... I don't know if there's just one place. And a lot of it is subjective in any event.
Do you know the @romancelandia group? You can follow them and could direct specific discussion questions there. And you'd probably want to connect with other writers. The #amwriting hashtag is a good one to follow. Add #romancelandia to narrow it to other romance writers.
Weird question, but is anybody in my reach on Mastodon a native-speaker of Oceanic languages?
(that's Hawaiian, Samoan, Fijian, related or nearby Polynesian/Micronesian languages, which I say to clarify the question for other people in the middle who might be forwarding it, not because anyone who speaks one will need the clarification)
This is not for anything big; I'm just trying to get some POV about how folks refer to the alphabet & diacritic marks.
Something I've noticed while playing #totk is that the further I progress, the less I want to fight enemies. It's no big deal killing everything I see when my weapon is stick with a rock attached but now that I'm running around with pristine weapons with lynel horns I don't want to use them on random enemies.
