Robert Louis Stevenson’s “The Bottle Imp” was first published (in English) , 8 Feb 1891, in the New York Herald. It was originally published in translation as “O le Fagu Aitu” in the missionary magazine O le sulu Samoa (The Samoan Torch)

> NSA officials told Wyden that not only is the intelligence agency purchasing data on Americans located in the US but that it also bought Americans' Internet metadata.

Source: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/01/nsa-finally-admits-to-spying-on-americans-by-purchasing-sensitive-data/

Why do you need to spy, when you can simply... buy?

We gave up our data willingly and made it easy for all the 3-letter agencies of the world. We only have ourselves to blame. 🤷‍♂️

I’m with ya on that. I could rant on and on about privacy, but this ain’t the place for that, I guess. The gov’t promised if we let ISPs and telcos turn over our data they could catch all the terrorists, and now 20 years later they can’t even catch kids making prank phone calls (SWATting) or telemarketers.

I guess it’s true, people get the leadership they deserve.

BobGnarley , (edited )

No, their job is to spy on NON DOMESTIC citizens. A court ruled that what they did under Snowden was illegal as fuck and they pinky swore not to do it anymore. Them spying on American citizens that don’t communicate with foreigners is supposed to be illegal. You said it so confidently, but you are mistaken.

Sure. The church was super reach in middle age, they collected taxes on everyone and their monasteries were working hard and were very efficient. Also people made a lot of donations in hope of staying out of hell

cafeinux ,

Also people made a lot of donations in hope of staying bought their way out of hell.

Indulgences were literally sold, those weren’t considered donations.

sj_zero , to selfhosted

Anyone who knows me knows that I've been using next cloud forever, and I fully endorse anyone doing any level of self hosting should have their own. It's just a self-hosted Swiss army knife, and I personally find it even easier to use than something like SharePoint.

I had a recurring issue where my logs would show "MYSQL server has gone away". It generally wasn't doing anything, but occasionally would cause large large file uploads to fail or other random failures that would stop quickly after.

The only thing I did is I went in and doubled wait_timeout in my /etc/mysql/mariadb.conf.d/50-server.cnf

After that, my larger file uploads went through properly.

It might not be the best solution but it did work so I figured I'd share.

Here’s a cool article I found on Nextcloud performance improvements, and connecting Redis over Unix sockets gave me a more substantial performance improvement than migrating to Postgres. Very happy I fell down this rabbit hole today.

To note if you’re following the tutorial in the link above, and for people using the nextcloud:stable container together with the recommended cron container:

  • the redis configuration (host, port, password, …) need to be set in config/config.php, as well as config/redis.config.php
  • the cron container needs to receive the same /etc/localtime and /etc/timezone volumes the app container did, as well as the volumes_from: tmp
haplo ,

Thank you for the link and the Redis pointers. I should double check that my Nextcloud setup is using Redis, it might well be misconfigured.

Morning Mastodonians!

I took Nemo, the one eyed orange tabby, to the vets yesterday. His eye was looking pretty bad. They did a couple tests and decided it was, in fact, a bacteria and so we got some antibiotic lotion to put in his eye and we're awaiting a call from the pharmacy for an oral antibiotic to give him. Worst of all, though, is he has to wear a cone, which is just the saddest thing to watch.

I just finished my hour-long interview with Oxford University concerning their study of Mastodon and decentralized social media.

They were especially interested in what we’ve done here at Veganism Social, as we have our own fork with custom features that address common complaints such as content discoverability.

Veganism Social’s use case was exemplary of the benefits of decentralizion. Our moderation is uniquely anti-speciesist, and the community has a clear purpose beyond ‘general’.

My analyses of the technological and sociological benefits of decentralization are extensive. I (currently) have a deep understanding of Mastodon’s code-base, and how to use it. I also worked as a software developer for centralized social media, and now moderate a subreddit with 100k members.

I could not possibly exhaust myself of exhilarating insights to share.

Surely, the Oxford study will broaden awareness of how decentralized social media will benefit society.

Next time my wife asks me to stop info-dumping, I’ll banter that Oxford might think it’s worth listening to. 🤭

They’re sending me an Amazon gift card as compensation, and of course I’m spending it all on candy.

@neilhimself @globcoco @I_am_elena @mark I’d heard some of this, but hadn’t seen Wil’s more detailed post—thanks to Neil for the link. This is heartbreaking, and all the more so due to the sheer cruelty of it… and for being absolutely undeserved. :/

@neilhimself @globcoco @I_am_elena @mark @dianeduane This makes me so sad. I've been following Wil on various platforms and media for I don't even know how long -- decades, I guess. I've never seen him to be anything other than a kind, generous, funny, good-hearted individual. Shame on the fedizens responsible for driving him away. We can and must be better than this.

I just wish I'd known he was on Mastodon at some point so I could give him some encouragement.

It’s what happens when we have libertarianism without socialism. One without the other is bad news.

sculd ,

Libertarianism is one of the worst ideology I have ever seen.

It claims to be for freedom but whenever someone tries to implement it, it turns to be extremely oppressive.

Interesting explanation about what really went wrong with Optus last week.

The short version: it looks like Optus doesn't control its own core network. Its parent company Singapore Telecom does. Optus just resells it.

Which is why Optis' CEO was so vague about what the issue actually was: she was protecting her bosses in Singapore.
