Never buy .xyz

I just wanted to post this here because I want to help you all and hurt gen.xyz as much as possible. I had a .xyz domain through njal.la which I used to host jellyfin, homeassistant, and other basic things for friends and family. My domain recently became inaccessible without any notice. After a while of troubleshooting, I found...

Thank you for that explanation. My regex impaired ass thought he wanted to hurt generation[x|y|z].

I’m like “what’d we ever do to you?”

OpticalMoose ,

At least the article points out that this is a Wall Street valuation, meaning it’s meaningless in reality, the company doesn’t have that much money, nor is it actually worth that much. In reality, Nvidia’s tangible book value (plant, equipment, brands, logos, patents, etc.) is $37,436,000,000.

$37,436,000,000 / 29,600 employees = $1,264,729.73 per employee

Which isn’t bad considering the median salary at Nvidia is $266,939 (up 17% from last year).

It sounds like the processor is the real limitation. Plenty of stuff from Windows XP era and before ran in less than 512MB.

Dr. Pulaski Appreciation Post (startrek.website)

I don’t know whether it’s a popular opinion or not, but I think Dr. Pulaski was a great character and I found her much more interesting than Dr. Crusher. I don’t know if it was down to the writing or the performance but Pulaski is one of the best parts of season 2 and I would have been happy to see her character continue....

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Renegade Cut had a pretty good video about her. piped.video/watch?v=HC4K1mx0SPQ. I was mostly wrong about her. I didn’t realize they became friends later. That’s a pretty big arc for only one season.

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Awesome. I’d heard that Pat was one of Redd’s old friends from the “Chitlin’ Circuit” era of comedy, but I’ve never actually seen him do standup.

OpticalMoose ,

Probably better to ask on !localllama. Ollama should be able to give you a decent LLM, and RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) will let it reference your dataset.

The only issue is that you asked for a smart model, which usually means a larger one, plus the RAG portion consumes even more memory, which may be more than a typical laptop can handle. Smaller models have a higher tendency to hallucinate - produce incorrect answers.

Short answer - yes, you can do it. It’s just a matter of how much RAM you have available and how long you’re willing to wait for an answer.

Why replace torrents? Why not use both? It’s a bonus if your usenet provider includes a VPN.

OpticalMoose ,

One thing I love about usenet is that it’s great if you’re just looking for one episode, song, etc and don’t want to download a whole collection.

Getting into Civ 6

I got into Civilization rather late with their fifth entry. I was hesitant because as I get older I need more time to game than I do new titles. Still I picked up six with all DLC during the last sale. I have to say I am liking the changes. It was good to wait because Civ does need its DLCs to feel complete....

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I’ve been looking to try Civ 5 or 6, but haven’t decided which one yet.

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I think 5 is what I’m looking for. Sometimes Civ (in general) gets out of hand with the micromanagement. I want something that’s kind of casual.

Even after the price cut, theirs is still 3x the price of Mercedes’ system which works better. I have a feeling Tesla’s earnings report won’t go well this afternoon. …yahoo.com/…/tesla-earnings-q1-175358835.html

Using a phone sounds inconvenient to me. I usually just pull my card out of my wallet, wave it over the terminal until I hear a beep and that’s it. Worst case scenario, I have to insert it into the chip reader or God-forbid swipe it through the slot like some kind of Neanderthal.

I’m kidding, but seriously, that’s easier than screwing around with a phone, to me.

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Same here. I guess I should have pointed out that I’m not really much of a phone guy to begin with. I don’t install many apps, and I stay logged out of Google. To me, losing a phone really just means losing my pictures and videos. The most expensive phone I’ve ever had was $200.

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I guess “It’s not for everyone” is the real takeaway here. I’m not a phone guy in general, but I’ve been using cards since BK was still selling 99¢ Whoppers. I’m guessing both of us are ready to pay before the cashier has our order rung up.

To each their own. (I’m finally admitting that I’m fighting a losing battle on writing checks though.)

I’m slightly pissed about the shrinkage, but really pissed that they don’t come in packages anymore (at least not where I live). It’s bad enough I have to scan my own groceries, but now I have to scan 8-12 individual eggs in a row. What’s next?

I pirated a certain ‘crash cars and shoot’em up’ game because, even though I own it on Steam, the gameplay (especially the launcher) absolutely sucks.

No more automatically downloading online content when I don’t even play online and no more updates breaking my mods. It’s worked out so well that I’m looking at pirating other games I already own.

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

The number one app for companies right now is “we can replace a lot of people and save a ton of money”, specifically look at the chatbot assistants you see on websites. Once they get the kinks worked out there, I guarantee they’ll have a talking version that will replace call center workers. And that’s only the beginning.

They’ve already run the numbers and figured the upfront costs are worth it. Occasional maintenance/cooling/upgrades/tech support is still going to be cheaper than FICA/Medicare/401K matching/PTO/maternity leave/overtime/workman’s comp/running a huge HR department/family day barbecues, etc.

Just trading one type of equipment for another, in their eyes.

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

It’s just the start though. It’s going to spread to any and every thing they can think of. When’s the last time a corporation said “Naw, that’s off limits. We can’t in good conscience monetize that.”

Why do you need to spy, when you can simply... buy?

We gave up our data willingly and made it easy for all the 3-letter agencies of the world. We only have ourselves to blame. 🤷‍♂️

Seriously. Why act like the NSA are the bad guys? It’s literally their job. They would be negligent in their duties if they didn’t do it.

If people want more privacy, they need to change the fucking laws.

OpticalMoose , (edited )
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Be mad at them all you want. But being mad at them doesn’t change anything.

Edit: Sorry. I didn’t mean for that to come out snippy. My point is there’s nothing wrong with being mad. It’s the action that gets results.

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I’m with ya on that. I could rant on and on about privacy, but this ain’t the place for that, I guess. The gov’t promised if we let ISPs and telcos turn over our data they could catch all the terrorists, and now 20 years later they can’t even catch kids making prank phone calls (SWATting) or telemarketers.

I guess it’s true, people get the leadership they deserve.

I don’t think the handheld data is accurate. The Steam Deck, and any other x86 handheld, will probably be lumped in with PC sales. But still, the Nintendo Switch should have huge numbers by itself.

PC died. Trying the legal options.

And fuck. I really miss plex. I’ve had Netflix and Hulu forever as family won’t let me cancel. Decided to sign up to Paramount + for some Trek. Twice in lower decks it didn’t save my watched episodes. Doesn’t mark episode as watched if you exit during the credits. And multiple playback issues....

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I’d definitely swap as many parts in/out as possible before buying new stuff. Besides, you might end up finding out something just became unseated or unplugged - it happens over time. Just have some thermal paste handy before you start swapping CPUs.

Does it boot / POST at all?

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yep.

“In 1978, the Cray 1 supercomputer cost $7 Million, weighed 10,500 pounds and had a 115 kilowatt power supply. It was, by far, the fastest computer in the world. The Raspberry Pi costs around $70 (CPU board, case, power supply, SD card), weighs a few ounces, uses a 5 watt power supply and is more than 4.5 times faster than the Cray 1”

Raspberry Pi ARM CPUs - The comment above was for the 2012 Pi 1. In 2020, the Pi 400 average Livermore Loops, Linpack and Whetstone MFLOPS reached 78.8, 49.5 and 95.5 times faster than the Cray 1.

Comparing compression in AV1, x264, and x265 (kbin.social)

I recently got it into my head to compare the various popular video codecs in an effort to better understand how av1 works and looks compared to x264 and x265. I also had ideas of using a intel video card to compress a home video security setup, and what levels of compression I would need to get good results....

Hardware question

Hello! This might not be the right community but I’m looking at building a new server and you operate in similar areas and might have experience with this. I’ve got a GPU without video outputs, can I combine that with a CPU without integrated graphics and still get video output from the HDMI located on the motherboard?

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I just did a quick bing chat search (“does DRI_PRIME work on systems without a cpu with integrated graphics?”) and it says it will work. I can’t check for you because my CPUs all have graphics.

I CAN tell you that some motherboards will support it (my ASUS does) and some don’t (my MSI).

BTW, I’m talking about Linux. If you’re using Windows, there’s a whole series of hoops you have to jump through. LTT did a video a while back.

OpticalMoose , (edited )
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

It’s probably a pain to set up in Windows. In Linux, it just works, there’s nothing to set up. I’m using it right now.

OP really should have mentioned their OS.

Edit: Actually, nevermind both my posts. I know DRI_PRIME works by using my APU for regular desktop activity, and routing discrete GPU output in whenever a game is being played. But I don’t know if it’s possible to make it use the dGPU all the time.

Even if it did, it would only work inside the OS, so if you had to boot into the BIOS for anything, you wouldn’t have a display. So for all intents and purposes, it wouldn’t really work.

AMD APUs have Video Coding Engine / Unified Video Decoder, while Intel CPUs have QuickSync. FFMPEG’s hardware page says that AMD support is incomplete.

You may want to ask over in !datahoarder . This topic often came up back on Reddit, and the general vibe I got was that most people prefer QuickSync. Intel may not be great in a lot of areas, but they are a beast in video encoding/decoding. That being said, I use a Ryzen APU and it’s perfectly fine. There are way more important things to look at when choosing a CPU.

If your performance is slow, I would check your CPU is listed on the chart I linked above. Not all CPUs support all codecs.

Edit: If your CPU doesn’t support the codec, it will still work, it just won’t be accelerated.

I just looked at my Steam stats today and 52% is RT3. There may be plenty of games that surpass it in visuals, but game mechanics are a different story, and without a stock market I don’t see much of a point.

I played Tropico 3-5, but gave up after they refused to give us highways and overpasses.

Were are the houses supposed to come from? I don’t see many being built around me. Sellers aren’t just going to put their house up for sale unless they have someplace to move to.

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I don’t think it will burst. It’ll just slowly deflate as new houses come onto the market and demand eases. The main problem (at least where I live) is that there just aren’t enough houses being built. I don’t think we’ll see a sharp price drop anytime soon because there are so many people waiting to buy.

OpticalMoose ,
@OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

So true. Where I am, a podunk town in the deep south, most of the homes being built are 4 bed, 1800sf+. The ‘starter’ homes with 3 beds, 1200sf are still like $185k which is ridiculous compared to what people make around here.

Even building condominiums would be an improvement. Personally, I hate condos (because I own one) but at least it gives people the chance to own something.
