The Kids' parents left them on the Enterprise while they went on "sabbatical"? WTF?
"Yes darling. Let's go on a year-long vacation away from our scientific pursuits. It's all gotten so boring. What should we do with the children, you ask? Let's leave them in the daycare on the starship. The counselor and the android will take care of them."
"Splendid idea, darling. Let's GO."

Apas: ActivityPub via email

https://apubtest2.srcbeat.com/apas.html

The overarching goal is an experimental system to make ActivityPub federation stuff clearer for devs, sysadmins and advanced users.

The documentation is incomplete and the code is really not OK! But they always say it's better to get stuff out the door for others to look at sooner. Maybe it inspires others to think about the Fediverse/ActivityPub in weird new ways!

PS thanks @emersion for your SMTP work!

Very interesting. It would certainly make doom scrolling harder. Email always feels more personal, like each message was sent specifically to me for a reason. As opposed to feeds, which feels like looking at cars as they drive by.

I think this system pushes against those boundaries. This sort of concrete brainstorming at the edges is such a crucial part of software evolution, so thank you.

I would actually love this. I use email for everything, it is so nice to have everything come to the same place. Right now I follow a few Mastodon users via an RSS-to-Email service, but the problem with that is that you can’t follow private accounts/see followers-only toots. It would be great to have a full email bridge.

I was considering making this myself at one point. But I think one of the big problem with ActivityPub is that it describes a single particular account. So if my ActivityPub-email bridge was running you wouldn’t also be able to access a Mastodon UI and for example browse other posts. So my account would need to be email-only which would be missing UX for a lot of things (like commenting on a random post I was linked to).

House passes bill that would require ByteDance to either sell TikTok, or get banned in the U.S. Will go to the Senate next.

How do I properly resize my LVM partitions when it is inside LUKS?

Do I have to boot in a USB to do it or can it be done while the crypt is open/being used? I need to resize my root partition.

@linux

talesofaprinny OP ,
@talesofaprinny@mastodon.social avatar

@atzanteol All's good. Yea, reason for the post was that even though I took the partitions offline it wouldn't still let me resize. So I think the best next move would be just booting into a USB and see if it lets me.

The whole disk well, only the boot is separated. The rest of the partition has the whole space controlled by LVM. Interestingly even though that may be the setup something was just rejecting my resize request.

Sadly have more to say but Mastodon limit is hitting haha. nutshell

atzanteol ,

Did you already shrink the filesystem? I think lvresize will refuse to shrink if the FS is too big (not sure - I don’t shrink volumes often).

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

@ajsadauskas @neil @asklemmy Looks amazing!

My only question is about whether drop shadows on text was prominent. I’m having trouble remembering how that effect would have been accomplished in the 90s, since I don’t think CSS got it until later. Would it have been something on the <font> tag only supported in Internet Explorer?

ramsey ,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@ajsadauskas @neil @asklemmy As for chat, probably the best way to do that today is to use Web Sockets but style it to look like frames or a Java applet on the page.
