Wir waren dabei und sind beeindruckt von der guten Arbeit, die die Regionalbibliographien leisten!

Auch @historikerinnen und mit Interesse für Regionalgeschichte sollten hier recherchieren:

What have I done?! My abomination of an idea of bridging my email and ActivityPub progresses. If you see this message, something is working! Comments replies are welcome as it's a good test of this system :) People keep saying ActivityPub is a lot like email. If it's so similar to email, could I use my email client to interact with the fediverse? Previously I did this by writing a SMTP interface to the Mastodon HTTP API. That worked. But as we probably know, the fediverse is not Mastodon; it's really ActivityPub. The real deal would be working with ActivityPub directly, not the Mastodon HTTP API. And that's now (mostly?) working! In shonky diagram form, sending looks like this: laptop --SMTP--> my_server --ActivityPub--> fediverse Replies look like this: fediverse --ActivityPub--> my_server --SMTP--> mailbox <--IMAP-- laptop my_server translates back and forth between ActivityPub messages and mail messages. For example given the message: Date: Wed, 6 Mar 2024 16:37:59 +1100 From: Oliver Lowe To: [email protected] Subject: test 2 test hello world! The following ActivityPub message is created: { "@context": "https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams", "id":"https://apubtest2.srcbeat.com/outbox/1709703480070628170", "type":"Note", "name":"test 2", "to": ["https://aussie.zone/c/localtesting","https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#Public"], "cc": ["https://aussie.zone/c/localtesting"], "published":"2024-03-06T16:37:59+11:00", "attributedTo":"https://apubtest2.srcbeat.com/actor.json", "content":"test hello world!", "mediaType":"text/markdown" } There's still a lot of bugs (of course) and unimplemented bits (of course). I can't call this a proper fediverse service yet. I'm going to roll with this for a bit and see how it holds up.

Very cool!

I guess the mods didn’t find this very funny, since they nuked it. Disappointing, because I was able to read it through the magic of caching and it made me crack up laughing

I was bored so I did the unthinkable. Well, to me it was always unthinkable as I have always been anti- . But, out of curiosity I subscribed to -4o and have been feeding various essays, poems, and posts from my various websites and asking for explications and such. And wow does have a great deal of just wonderful things to say about me. I will admit getting all this truly high praise is seducing.

richard OP ,

Okay. So I have been using for a couple of hours and there is no doubt in my mind that many, many, many college students are using to write essays. I am so, so, so sorry professors and lecturers. I am so glad this was not around when I was in school. First colleges across the country started shutting down extensive courses/programs and now this. Oh, what a loss of a good .

I have to say that I have mixed feelings about the Ninja Creami blender-style ice cream maker compared to a churner. But holy shit it makes perfect milkshakes with near zero effort. Makes it completely worth it.

Just sent out “Rising Resistance" to beta readers! So glad to have revisions off my plate. It's always the slowest part of writing for me. I don't dislike it, I add a ton of material, but it's a slog.

No, I guess Wayland is kind of on my to-do list…I just don’t need anything it offers. I’m grumpily enough implementing systemd already

anders OP ,

@REdOG
I see. Well for me too, Xorg offered all the features I need and is still more well supported than Wayland in some areas, but on my system Wayland has so much better performance. On Xorg I was having mouse lags, on Wayland it's just smooth.

You can set general options for all compilations in /etc/makepkg.conf, and package specific options would probably be best handled by just downloading a PKGBUILD for the package in question and editing it to include the option you want to enable. makepkg won’t ask you about options by default when building something, but it’s not that complicated to edit the PKGBUILD prior to calling makepkg.

anybody know of some novels or series with themes including the good side of humanity? I really like for that, where the human heart is challenged yet prevails.

Not necessarily looking for Sci-Fi but not excluding it either. Maybe something historical or steampunky would be cool. 😅

"What has kept me from renewing with all plant science professional orgs has been the lack of accessibility & inclusion for disabled people. The ageism towards older students is also not helpful or welcoming."

Does anyone have experience of difficult conversations with geriatric parents? I could use advice on how to tackle a tricky situation. Might run to a few posts:

My mum has very limited mobility and falls a lot, together with all sorts of other ailments that are no fun. She has a history of depression (including staying in a psychiatric unit) and is going downhill again as her life is shrinking so much. This is difficult for everyone in lots of ways but on thing has risen to the top. Cont'd...

callunavulgaris OP ,
@callunavulgaris@mastodon.scot avatar

and, I might add, entirely capable of looking after her as I do very frequently and she always says I do so much blah blah. Then we have to tell her that she's asking too much of her friends - I don't want to admit how I know that - and that if she feels the need for someone in the room with her when Dad's out and me floating around the house isn't enough then it'll be a carer at £30/hr. Of course I can be around but with my @actuallyautistic hat on please don't make me sit in a cluttered room

callunavulgaris OP ,
@callunavulgaris@mastodon.scot avatar

@actuallyautistic with a very loud TV. I can do it for a few minutes but it really does my head in. So she'll feel that me being around means sitting in monastic silence. She can't really chat because she's very hard to understand. It's a shitshow of a situation. She doesn't really get that for Dad and me to look after her she needs to work with us. So fun conversation coming up and I'm not sure how to approach it without sounding brutal, which isn't my intention but often happens.
