floofloof , in NHS referrals for anxiety in children more than double pre-Covid levels

Well we’ve done nothing to prepare for the next pandemic, we’ve had proof that in crisis people will fight each other before they’ll pull together to help, our social systems continue to be dismantled for profit, everyone except the all-powerful ultra-rich is struggling to afford to live, owning a home is an unattainable dream, education is more expensive and than ever and doesn’t guarantee any employment result, the world is creeping closer to war, fascists are on the march everywhere, minorities are being blamed and threatened for the sins of the rich, and the planet is being destroyed at a rate that makes this generation’s prospects look like mostly starvation and war. Maybe young people aren’t too stupid to notice some of this?

Churbleyimyam ,

I was seriously appalled with how quick people were to turn on each other during the pandemic. It’s one thing to bitch about people with different politics than yours but quite another to grass up your neighbours for minor infractions. Also the kind of open jingoism between counties/regions during tier-system phase. It made me realise what it must have been like in the soviet union. Shocking to see our own capacity for that.

Wimopy , in How climate crisis made this UK summer feel like a letdown

So they just compared averages/peaks and said “it’s just your perception being used to too hot weather, it’s not unusually cold”.

Fair, but that feels very superficial. Was the temperature variation higher than usual? More/less rainfall or humidity?

This is not to say our perception isn’t warped by climate change, but climate change isn’t just higher temperatures. Normal weather patterns changing, more extremes, etc.

I don’t have the time or will to check on that, but I just feel making a 3 paragraph article on a complicated phenomenon as weather and climate is just a bit lacking.

In a nation so riddled with poverty, strife, and failing public services, where most of us are struggling just to keep a roof over our heads and get our serious illnesses treated, is it any surprise that things like this fall through the cracks?

It’s these sorts of issues that a first world nation should have the time and energy to focus on improving.

Unfortunately these days we’re a second world nation that still thinks it’s a first world nation. Heck, a not insignificant portion of us still think we’re as important as when we were the British Empire 🤦‍♀️

We’re delusional, we need to have a reality check on our new, smaller place in the world, and on how successful and wealthy our economy and our people actually are.

Once we come to terms with how weak and feeble we have become as a country, we can refocus our efforts based on reality - not on a fantasy of our past glory, and then hopefully backlogs like this can slowly begin to be dealt with ❤️

Churbleyimyam , (edited )

I think there is more than enough money in this country to take care of it, it’s just in the wrong hands.

Love Music Hate Racism has been going for years and it is a recruitment front for Stand Up to Racism, which itself is a front for the Socialist Worker Party, a group with an extreme history of abuse and movement sabotage and you can read about it at linktr.ee/fuckswp. These are fundraising activities for an already wealthy group that doesn’t need the money since they get a good chunk of union dues and membership fees of older/less active members. Give your money to the mosque repair funds from the areas impacted or attend your local antifascist fundraiser; they tend to have decent sets and they help fund train tickets to bumblefuck nowhere and a surprising amount of equipment (mostly for unannounced background work)

777 , in UK Space Command successfully launches first military satellite

You mean to say we didn’t have these already? I just assumed we did honestly. Were we just buying time from commercial vendors?

Person264 ,

Seems like it. SSTL (who made this satellite) do loads of earth observation stuff already so the MOD probably just bought time on those satellites like you said.

randombullet ,

Mostly because they just use the FVEY assets already.

“The riots in our country don’t count because it was just a few racist weirdos.”

hitmyspot ,

I think thenpoibt was more that it had a sectarian tinge, rather than being a left/right divide like elsewhere. So, maybe for different reasons than England. However, disaffected youth is always going to be at the core. The rise in middle aged rioters is a worrying trend.

@wren@feddit.uk avatar

I don’t have a telegraph account - someone summarise?

Emperor ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

I’ll go one better. Here is the archive.

atro_city OP ,

Here's an archive of the page.

Ms Tweedale, 58, is said to wear low-cut black corsets, fishnet tights with high heels and a gothic choker with a pentagram when she attends the office.

She's trans and her attire led to a minister stating that kind of "fetish gear" cannot be worn at work. Others working with her say it's highly inappropriate and unprofessional. That's the gist of it.

rah ,

She’s trans

Is that relevant?

flamingos ,

Apparently, as the Telegraph decided to give this nothingburger of a paragraph its own heading

Ms Tweedale previously prompted controversy in the department after she was singled out by civil servants who accused her of furthering the “chilling effect” of gender ideology.

rah ,

the Telegraph

I was asking about OP’s comment, not the Telegraph’s article. Of course the Telegraph will include irrelevant detail in order to sensationalise (in their view) the story. Others repeating that irrelevant detail is questionable though.

off_brand_ ,

Well, the article itself dedicates a section to how she’s been targeted for “gender ideology”, which is dog whistle for “trans”. Calling non-cis gender expression a “fetish” is another dog whistle. Those two points in combination make her trans-ness relevant, even if the author isn’t going so far as to explicitly call out that this anti-trans behavior.

rah ,

the article

Again, I wasn’t talking about the article.

palordrolap ,

Being trans does not give extra dress-code rights, and nor should it. None of the other women are allowed to dress that way, so why should she?

Now, if she wants to challenge the dress code for more esoteric modes to be allowed, that should be taken under consideration by whoever is in charge of that, but in the meantime, she should at least try to conform. Then if the decision was to go against her, she'd have the requisite conforming clothing already.

(Tangentially, there's an argument that gender non-conforming people might want to define other professional dress codes that don't strictly fit with male and female norms, but that's doesn't seem to be what's happening here.)

I understand that it's difficult for trans folk who deal with transphobics everywhere they turn and thus every discrimination could be transphobia, but this one seems pretty easy to test.

And I have to wonder how she'd react if she won the dress code change and other people, cis people, started dressing more like her.
