Emperor , in UK riots: Judge hands down longest jail sentences yet
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

Paul Williams, 45, was jailed for two years and two months on Friday after pleading guilty to one count of violent disorder in connection with the Sunderland riots.

The court heard he had entered the city centre to collect a takeaway, but ended up at the “forefront” of an “orgy of mindless destruction, violence and disorder”.

His defence lawyer said he had no political opinions around immigration and was “entirely unaware of the basis of what started this”.

Newcastle Crown Court heard Williams threw metal fencing and a can of beer at police, stripped off his shirt and ran at the line of riot shields.

It makes you wonder what goes on in some people’s heads (or doesn’t go on).

hellothere ,

Mackems. What can I say?

JohnSmith ,

he had entered the city centre to collect a takeaway

That’s one expensive takeway. I hope it was tasty.

Hossenfeffer ,
@Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk avatar

So he just innocently went into town to get a takeaway wearing an ill-fitting St George’s cross t-shirt?

What a spot of luck for him!

Emperor ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

To be fair to him (and I’m not feeling fair), that photo is of the previously mentioned rioter who was done for inciting violence, which totally wouldn’t believe looking at his picture.

echodot ,

His defence lawyer said he had no political opinions around immigration and was “entirely unaware of the basis of what started this”.

That was his defense? Granted he didn’t exactly leave his lawyer with much option but that’s a terrible defense.

I’m afraid she isn’t wrong about their existence. People ashamed of their voting. People who don’t believe they voted for anything but their own self interest. People whose family and friends “won’t understand”. Shy Tories have long been a thing.

thesmokingman , in Liz Truss targets 'secret Tories' with new campaign

Liz Truss? Liz Truss the PM whose lasting contribution was going out before a cabbage? That Liz Truss? The Liz Truss who flip-flopped on a major policy that saw her biggest supporter ousted from the Exchequership faster than a head of lettuce rotted? Why the fuck would anyone take her seriously beyond her shelf life?

Yup, my pension contribution is about £5k a year and I feel damn lucky to have that!

WatTyler , in Sunak attacks Starmer on trans rights as Brianna Ghey’s mother visits Parliament

Yet another moment in British politics that has flooded me with anger and upset, followed by despair that there’s nothing I can do to rid us of malevolent, hateful bigots like Rishi Sunak.

JoBo ,

It’s not even like he was caught unawares doing his usual schtick without realising Ms Ghey was present. Not that it would be OK anyway. But Starmer literally introduced her at the start of PMQs. Grotesque. Absolutely grotesque.

WatTyler ,

For Brianna’s mother’s sake, I’m relieved that Sunak used the correct pronouns when he spoke about Brianna at the end. However, what does it say about Sunak and this bullshit, culture war transphobia that he did use the correct pronouns for Brianna?

The whole thrust of the attack was to imply that Starmer doesn’t know what a woman is but then when it’s convenient, Sunak tacitly agrees with Starmer that Brianna was a woman.

I’d almost have more sympathy for Sunak if I thought he was a misinformed transphobe. I resent him more because I don’t believe he genuinely cares, like some do. I have never had any reason to believe he thinks there is any problem with trans people. Yet, he is willing to endanger the lives of these beleaguered, threatened innocent people, for what? For the fucking Conservative and Unionist party. A reprehensible institution that has done infinitely more damage in the real world than any trans person has caused in the most batshit, unhinged nightmares of a Mail Online commenter.

mannycalavera , in Liz Truss leaves stage in Beccles as 'lettuce' banner unfurls
@mannycalavera@feddit.uk avatar

The problem with Truss is that she has nothing to fall back to career wise for the rest of her life. Apart from that outrageous PM pension she has nothing to do to pass her time. Because anytime she wants to get even loosely involved in politics, the lettuce will remind her of her last attempt. And I’m absolutely fine with that 👍.

fox2263 ,

Sadly she has a long string of speaking gigs. Her and Boris charge a premium for it.

mannycalavera ,
@mannycalavera@feddit.uk avatar

Boris was at least a “journalist” (heavily finger quotes there). I’m not sure what Truss is apart from a political hack?

fox2263 ,

She was pie minister

echodot ,

Perhaps you should get a PR position for the pork distribution market?

Flax_vert ,

Boris was entertaining and in comparison to Truss, actually seems to be a decent prime minister. As disastrous as Brexit was, some of his immigration policies were an improvement from Theresa May’s

floofloof OP ,

It’s all she can do. She could try to parlay her political experience into management or consultancy, but it’s clear to everyone that she was ultimately very bad at everything except climbing the greasy pole to the top of an organization full of unpleasant weirdos. Once she had the responsibility to lead in the wider world, she revealed herself as clueless.

hairyfeet ,

Sorry, I mean we can’t take the piss out of her for taking a PM’s pension.

HowManyNimons ,

Meh, I think there’s plenty of piss to take already. I’m glad we get to keep the money.

TheGrandNagus , (edited ) in Liz Truss leaves stage in Beccles as 'lettuce' banner unfurls

My mortgage, which I had to pretty much sacrifice 5 years of my social life and live like a pauper to even secure, given how crazy house prices are in this country, has went up £400 per month because of her. I’m on the minimum wage of £22,300 per year for a full-time job.

A lot of the problems in my life right now are directly because of Truss.

Boo fucking hoo if she doesn’t like being reminded of how much of a failure she was, is, and will forever continue to be. It’s a small price to pay compared to what plenty of others are facing.

Eheran ,

What did she do to cause that?

echodot ,

Really?

Eheran ,

Uh … yes? Sorry for not keeping up with UK politics I guess?

sunbeam60 ,

TLDR; she became prime minister (PM) because some powerful forces in the Conservative Party thought she would be easy to control (they were right), she instigated a borderline libertarian, trickle-down tax reform, the international money markets went insane (because it was borderline insane, unfunded and left no doubt as to her ineptitude), the U.K. economy took a massive hit - and all of this within a week or two - and it became crystal clear that she actually was indeed exactly as inept and dumb as she looked, so she was replaced because while everyone in her batshit crazy party was like “tax cuts for the rich”, enough of them understood that for the money markets to have any confidence in the U.K. economy couldn’t actually be run by someone with the intelligence of a lettuce. Fun fact, a newspaper ran a “who will die first, this lettuce or Liz Truss?” live video stream of a lettuce were proven right; the lettuce outlived her.

I’m missing a lot of detail that can best be summarised as: Liz Truss is a shining example of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Although in fairness to her, she did open up new POOOOOOORK MARKETS!!!

Eheran ,

Holy moly, thanks. I love that bit about the lettuce, brilliant!

todd_bonzalez ,
@todd_bonzalez@lemm.ee avatar

The more I learn about her, the more I hate her.

But, and this is probably going to be a mistake to say out loud, nothing seems to stop her from being wildly attractive to me. It doesn’t even make sense, she’s just got a crazy cute face, and it pains me that behind that pretty face is such a bad brain.

echodot ,

This is a fantastic video of her at the horse racing and she’s looking so gormless, that I’m reasonably confident that some of the contestants have more going on between the eyes than she does.

FozzyOsbourne ,

“Oh yes Liz, fuck me like I’m the economy!”

sunbeam60 ,

I mean … ehm … so … ok …

kralk ,

You might have started by reading the article?

Luvs2Spuj ,

Tried to steamroll through new economic policy that was plain stupid, which the bank of England had to intervene on to stop peoples pensions going broke. This resulted in a huge spike in interest rates that thousands of people are still affected by today. There is much more to it, but thats the short story. Fuck this woman, she should be in prison not flogging books.

HowManyNimons ,

This is a good question and you shouldn’t be downvoted for asking it.

Interesting downvotes.

So people want the adults that radicalized these kids to get off with no punishment?

That’s a hot take I didn’t expect from here!

FarceOfWill ,

I didn’t see it earlier but I’d have assumed this was saying the police should be chasing Rotherham child abusers not wasting time on riots.

ilovecheese ,
@ilovecheese@feddit.uk avatar

Interesting. Edited my 1st comment for clarity, hopefully.

GreatAlbatross ,
@GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk avatar

To me when someone says groomers, it puts my mind to tackling the child abusers, or anti-lgbt people accusing people of the same.

Emperor OP ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

I think they are generally calling them “influencers” and there have already been a few people charged for posting online.

ilovecheese ,
@ilovecheese@feddit.uk avatar

It’s good they’ve started with the online ‘influencers’, but is it likely that so many young (11-15 iirc) kids became so radicalized so quickly just from these online sources?

Emperor OP ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

That would imply that the vast majority of rioters are fascists and it is likely they aren’t. The people being convicted so far (and as the article says, they have tended to be charged with lower order offenses, it seems like those who were most heavily involved are coming down the pipe and will get harsher sentences) tend to be knuckleheads, opportunists, career criminals and people with nothing to loose who just want to watch the world burn.

It should be no surprise that in Liverpool riots took place in Walton, one of the most deprived areas of the country. A lot of the kids there have no future, so will take any excuse to smash things up (stupidly, including a community-run library).

ilovecheese ,
@ilovecheese@feddit.uk avatar

So it’s more a case of general ‘mob mentality’ rather than a belief in their bigoted cause? That makes sense.

Emperor OP ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

We probably aren’t going to get a simple, coherent narrative out of this but it is too early to tell. The initial rounds of convictions have been the easy ones for general disorder and thievery, which are easy to prove from footage of the incidents (think the lad robbing Greggs, the boy who stole thousands of pounds worth of vapes or the guy rather casually looting Lush). They tend to all be local and it all undermines the comforting story people were telling themselves, that it was largely fascists bussed in for trouble.

However, we are now seeing people charged fir riot and inciting violence on social media, which are likely trickier to prove but come with a much higher sentence. I’d assume they’ll keep working up the chain and we’ll see some fascists prosecuted eventually, it may even be some are done under terror offences.

So it’s still early days and there’s likely a lot to unpick. However, a picture seems to be emerging of the hardcore organising things on Telegram, with it bubbling up to the larger social media platforms thanks to useful idiots and those posts then get jumped on an amplified by bots and troublemakers. Once the location of riots are confirmed and the knowledge is widespread you can have a core of actual fascists, joined by a larger mob of knuckleheads, opportunists and people with nothing to lose. It’s quite a cunning “force multiplier” as you don’t just have to rely on a handful if far right bovver boys and they can make it look like their are a lot more of them than there are.

If you are looking for who to.blame for radicalising this mob, then it is the Tory government who have spent years scapegoating minorities to distract from their lack of funding for pretty much anything that would make a lot of people’s lives better. I doubt they are going to be swept up in this.
