ericisshort , in TIL Banksy snuck "cave art" into the British Museum as a hoax in 2005 and then they put it on display for real in 2018.

What I want to know is how Banksy got it back after it was noticed on display in 2005. Did the museum give it back or sell it or just throw it away? Something had to happen in order for Bansky to loan it back to the museum over a decade later.

I didn’t know it was real. My favourite witcher 3 quest just became even more awesome.

can , in TIL Star Trek’s (1966) theme song originally had lyrics written by Gene Roddenberry, who wrote them solely to usurp half of the royalties from composer Alexander Courage. The lyrics never aired.

Is that what happened to MAS*H?

marretics , in As if elephants weren't already awesome, they eat xmas trees!

I sure hope they won’t eat mine… It’s made of plastic.

Hobart_the_GoKart , in TIL about Salim Kara, who stole over $2m of coins by using a car antenna and a magnet

Kara was effectively stealing 20% of LRT fares over the 13-year period; one in five coins that were fed into the machines by the paying public ended up in his shaving bag, amounting to around 2 million customer journeys. It seems inconceivable that he wasn’t caught sooner.

This really does seem inconceivable. I’m an industry accountant and worked in the safe room counting drawers for a supermarket and a cafeteria. I lose it when I’m not balanced, even $10 on a 200k deposit. How… How was someone not noticing 20%?? Hell he deserves it with the lack of controls in place. Maybe things were different then…

sukhmel ,

It’s written that they did notice it but were unable to pinpoint the problem and thought it is a software bug. Reminds of a recent story where an actual software bug got post workers in the UK jail time and huge fines because they were accused of stealing that money

mipadaitu , in TIL that the telescope that capted the Wow! Signal (only likely candidate to be of ET origin) was razed to make room for a golf course

A bit of over exaggerating in the title (as per usual.) The frequency used is one that we would consider a good candidate for listening for alien signals.

That doesn’t mean the wow signal had anything to do with extra terrestrial technology.

The article is decent, and covers a bit of the tech used in the radio telescope, but the parts about the alien signals are just pure speculation.

afraid_of_zombies ,

There is no non-intelligent actor explanation for it known at this time that accounts for the data. Which leaves us with 3 options

  1. Someone was breaking the rules and breaking the rules in a really weird way.
  2. Something happens in astronomy which we don’t yet understand
  3. Aliens

Now I don’t think 3 is very likely, at all. Especially the way the events happened.
