Ah! You’re getting at something interesting in human psychology: the existence of knowledge (‘knowing’) versus being able to use that knowledge across situations (‘transfer’). Do you know the phases of learning, sometimes simplified as superficial (knowing-that), deep (knowing-how), and transfer (knowing-with)? If you do, how does that apply to this situation? If you don’t, I linked to a video but I’m happy to explain it 😊

quafeinum , in TIL: How António Moniz Won the Nobel Prize for the Frontal Lobotomy in 1949

1949 was the only year that the ‘Nobel prize for the frontal lobotomy’ was given out. It was replaced by the Nobel prize for peace the next year.

I remember in school people would say something loudly- neck check? or redneck check? I’m really not sure- and then slap you on the back of the neck. The assumption was that if you had a sunburned neck it’d hurt. I can’t remember why the hell it was done, just that it was.

"but also provided psychological protection by shading the face from close scrutiny. "

To me it feels like this was made up by some spoiled twat, who couldn’t stand that people that they thought were socially inferior, wouldn’t show the expected obeisance by removing their hat in front of their “betters”.

Yes, the south was a predominantly agrarian economy.

northendtrooper , in TIL the term Redneck likely originated from the sunburned red neck of those working in fields.

I read somewhere that the red neck part came from the red clay/dirt in the south. Where the backwoodsman usually had their neck covered by the dust. Hence redneck.

I thought blue barely existed in nature. are you telling me all of these green things hopping around have blue pigments in them?

Catoblepas OP ,

Funnily enough, they don’t have blue pigments! I don’t understand the exact physics, but from what I understand they have yellow pigment that lies underneath a layer of cells that reflect blue light back, which combine to make green. But if you were to isolate the yellow pigment it would still look yellow, while the blue reflecting cells only look blue in specific lighting conditions.

pelletbucket ,

oh that makes sense. I knew that most blue things in nature, like butterfly wings, were optical illusions

…but it’s complicated. No it’s not.

National squatters rights reform. None of this “20 years continuous occupation” rule, and criminalizing occupation itself.

Property that is essentially abandoned should be classified as such.

Am I the only one who is a but skeptical whenever the link is a medium blog? It’d be nice if I didn’t have to trace down the source from a blog and it was from a trustworthy source.

Especially since this medium blog is paywalled.

delirious_owl ,

Look at the author, not the domain. The same is true for mainstream news outlets.

The NYT isn’t credible, but many of their authors are

mecfs ,

I would say looking at a specific source for the claims is way more efficient than researching the credibility of the author.

Here it turns out, it is US govt statistics, which is rather credible on housing and homelessness statistics. However I have no clue about the general credibility of medium nor this specific author.

I’m pretty sure it’s everywhere, especially in big cities with a lot of airbnb. For instance in Montréal there’s hundreds of homeless people, but like 13’000 airbnb (most of them illegals) and thousands of vacant condos in high rise towers (because they are $$$). Downtown office buildings are also empty since covid.

givesomefucks ,

I can’t remember if it was a news article or plot of a show/movie…

But there was one couple in like a 30 unit building who lived there for months before realizing they were the only people in the building

HubertManne ,

Its crazy to me. Where I live a condo downtown will have 1k assesments and 1k in taxes per month and I have been told. Not sure if its true that there are services that send out a cleaning crew once a month to keep empty ones in good condition. Yeah they are worth a lot but if not rented in some way its 25k a year or more. Makes no sense to me.

KISSmyOS ,

They appreciate in value by more than $25k+5%/year, so it’s still a risk-free investment.

HubertManne ,

I would call that pretty risky given housing prices can collapse and you have to pay even if you can't sell.

Are airbnbs considered empty? If so, that’s not correct and its leading to misleading statistics
