I use it every day, plus a 512 GB SD card to store ROMs, striping functionalities is ridiculous.

The most recent phone I purchased does not a 3.5mm jack. It wasn’t really a decision I realized I was making, as the phone’s previous iteration had had it in an era when that wasn’t a given.

There have been a few times that I’ve missed it, not many, certainly fewer than 10 never a huge deal. But that’s infinitely more times than I’ve thought:

I’m so glad my phone doesn’t have a headphone jack.

Next phone will definitely have one because honestly

yeah I might use that

Is enough justification to spend $0.25 (if that) for them to integrate a jack. What stupid cost cutting.

jasondj ,

It’s not really about the cost of the jack, moreso about the aesthetic and the ability for water to get in, because the 3.5mm barrel jack was never really intended to be on something you’d worry about getting wet. At least not at a time when waterproof ratings were a thing.

You’re talking 163mm^3 of void space inside the phone just for the barrel plug itself, plus the enclosure around it, spring load mechanisms, and housing to sit on the board. A board that also has to change position or shape to accommodate the deep round plug where it can’t exist.

Honestly I’m really surprised phones moved to 3.5mm and didn’t try to team up with laptops to keep 2.5mm the norm on those platforms, or some other plug. Had they stuck with it it probably would’ve won and also made its way to game controllers.

But there’s really no need to when Bluetooth exists and is good enough for the vast majority of consumers, and that’s all that really matters.

I don’t mind a phone having one input, for audio and charge/data, it probably is a great choice from a production stand point. It is unfortunate how much less reliable the USB-C physical connection seems to be versus the 3.5mm though. I don’t know if it’s just me, but every USB-C device I’ve had eventually gets finicky with the connection, regardless of cable and cleanliness. My phone now using headphones with an adapter, if I move it much it will come loose and pause the playback. The 10+ year old phone I have with a 3.5mm jack though, I can swing it around holding the cord and it stays rock solid connected.

jasondj ,

Get a phone case with a dust cover or really clean the hell out of that port.

I was honestly surprised with how aggressive I have to be to scrape out packed lint. Using a toothpick I shaved to be a little fatter.

Now I take my vacuum (Miele) with the dust brush, on high, and go to town on the bottom of my phones like once a week.

RedAggroBest ,

You don’t think about how glad you are you don’t have a jack because you’re thinking about the nicer camera or bigger battery, or both, rather than the jack. No matter which way you fall the reasoning certainly isn’t just cost cutting

m0darn ,
Maggoty ,

I used it right up until I didn’t have a port in the phone for it anymore. Wired is 100% more reliable for headphones. I’m not even an audiophile, I just hate how Bluetooth drops and comes back wherever it wants. If we’re going to do wireless then we need a better protocol.

Chadteeka ,

Yeah still have one on my phone, still use it daily. I won’t buy a phone without one. Still rocking the apple wired headphones 10 years later. Still have a headphone jack in my car.

5in1k ,

I can’t, they took it away.

Lorindol ,

I use mine almost on a daily basis, with my headphones and when I connect my phone to my stereo system.

I do have Chromecast Audio hooked up and I own good wireless Hi-Fi earbuds, but I prefer to use cables. They just work better, no interference or any other hassle.

Fisk400 ,

When using wireless headphones you basically need to buy $100 ones before they equal the sound quality of a $5 dollar headphone set.

I accidentally bought a phone without a jack and I hate it because now I need to use a stupid little dongle that doesn’t work properly.

FlyingSquid ,

Skullcandy Sesh Evo noise cancelling earbuds- $65. Sounds good, works well, battery life long, etc.

Fisk400 ,

Thats progress I guess. Its still 10 times the price I used to pay for headphones tough.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Oh agreed there, my headphones of choice used to be $15 Akai headphones which were like earplugs with a tiny speaker in the middle, almost as good as noise-cancelling.

Actual noise-cancelling was worth the price for me though. And I admit it’s kind of nice to not accidentally pull the headphones out of the jack all the time.

Every single day.

NOFF ,

When I had a phone with a jack, I used it daily to listen to podcasts or music during my commute. Now, without a jack, I use a converter daily to listen to podcasts and music during my commute, but can no longer charge my phone and listen at the same time.

sturmblast ,

I do all the time.

Frenky_Fisher ,

I dont live in a 1st world so I prefer 3.5mm jack headphones over usb c ones because headphone manufacturers don’t have to bother with DAC and can use that money to build better audio drivers

brsrklf ,

Every time I need headphones.

Wireless is more hassle than convenience. Bluetooth, especially for audio, is rather shit and having to charge batteries is annoying.

And speaking of batteries, earbuds are yet another bit of trash you are just supposed to throw away when they stop working, because there’s nothing you’ll be able to do about it.

My new phone doesn’t have a headphone jack. Anyways I currently use my old phone daily because I hate how blue tooth audio is always slightly delayed. Watching videos is such a pain in the ass. Also it’s next to impossible to find non earbud Bluetooth headphones making my corded headset a must for listening to anything for extended periods of time. Especially when traveling iny home state where earbuds hold air pressure.

Maggoty ,

I’m using the Bose QC line. It’s fine for normal use, if a little pricey. There’s obviously still the bluetooth delay though.

creditCrazy ,
@creditCrazy@lemmy.world avatar

Holy $329. I recall my corded headset was $20 I believe and it’s been quite comfortable and nice. So man with that price tag I’d friggin hope they’d do something about the Bluetooth delay. Man blue tooth is pricey.

Maggoty ,

Yeah there’s a reason I linked the refurbished ones. There are cheaper ones though, these are noise cancelling which is a thing I desperately need.

mihnt ,
@mihnt@lemmy.world avatar

impossible to find non earbud Bluetooth headphones

Look up the Anker Soundcore headsets.

tocopherol ,
@tocopherol@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

All the Anker bluetooth gear I’ve used has been great, better than the Beats or Sony product that was comparable but much more expensive for no added performance, maybe higher quality materials though as the Anker Life Q20s I had did fall apart a bit, but I used them a ton.

mihnt ,
@mihnt@lemmy.world avatar

I have the Life 2 Neos and I’ve beat the shit out of them and they still work just fine. For reference of what I mean beat the shit out of, I used to be an apartment maintenance technician and I’ve hit them, dropped them, all sorts of abuse.

tocopherol ,
@tocopherol@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I definitely put them through hell before they came apart, the actual audio and charge still works great though, I just need a new housing lol.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

I use it every time I listen to music.

dgriffith , (edited )

I have a very nice set of Bose corded noise cancelling headphones and use them when I fly for work and at home sometimes when I want to chill out.

The advantage they have over Bluetooth is that the base functionality still works when the single AAA battery that powers them goes flat. Unlike Bluetooth headsets they also don’t switch to low power/BLE mode when they’re supposed to be “off”, so they don’t go flat when they’re in my travel bag for a week or two. They also plug straight into in-flight entertainment systems so I don’t need to use the $3 headphones the airline provides.

The AAA powers the noise cancelling for about 15-20 hours straight and the case has a spot for a spare so the whole setup is pretty good.

restingboredface ,

I have the same kind of headphones. They cost $400 (at the time) and now they are useless with most devices.

I also use sleep phones at night to fall asleep to asmr and those run with cables. If my tablet didn’t have a jack I wouldn’t be able to use them, and those sleep phones are a lifeline. Being able to listen to asmr on headphones while laying on my side makes it so much easier to fall asleep. All the Bluetooth variants are cheap Chinese knockoffs that fall apart after a couple months, but the sleepphones are still working years later.

shortdorkyasian ,

I was in a similar situation. Not sleep-phones, but just a particular type of headphones that I like. Have you thought about getting a Bluetooth receiver for them? It’s super annoying, but it’s the only way I’ve been able to keep my headphones. Just thought I’d suggest it if you hadn’t thought of this solution/kludge yet. www.fiio.com/btr3k

The other option is to get a USB-C adapter. us.creative.com/p/…/sound-blaster-play-4

restingboredface ,

Yeah I’ve been thinking about trying that actually. Even thought about trying to rewire the sleep phones to make them permanently bluetooth but didn’t want to mess them up. May try that or the adapter sometime.

bamboo ,

Most high end noise cancelling bluetooth headphones work as you describe. Noise cancelling and Bluetooth require it to be charged, but you can plug to a cable and listen passively.

dgriffith ,

Yeah the issue we’re slowly running into is that there’s no more 3.5mm sockets in newer phones.

When my current phone dies it’ll be a toss-up between trying to find a decent phone with a headphone socket or trying a USB C audio adaptor and see how that goes.

bamboo ,

A $10 dongle is gonna be a lot better than limiting yourself to the obscure few phones that still have a headphone jack. They make ones that allow you to play and charge too, useful especially in cars.
