Is there a way to get SteamLink on Quest without signing into Meta or using their shitty app?

JoYo ,
@JoYo@lemmy.ml avatar

yah, sideloading

helenslunch , (edited )
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Okay but I’ve run into a lot of electronics that won’t let you do absolutely anything without creating an account first. Is that not the case here?

Redex68 ,

Yeah but I think you need to have a developer account and be logged in to sideload.

Chinzon ,

When will we get linux compatibility?

DavLemmyHav ,

You need to sign into meta yes, which sucks, but it might be possible to keep the headset offline. It would mean no steam link but sideloading (and thus piracy) is easy as hell on quest.

Redex68 ,

I mean you can’t stream from a PC at all without signing into a meta account I’m pretty sure, so it’s not like it changes anything.

Actually idk if you can do anything with the headset without signing in?

helenslunch ,

I can and do. I don’t have a Meta account.

Actually idk if you can do anything with the headset without signing in?

Yes that’s my concern but I was hoping someone would have hacked it by now just enough to make it functional for SteamVR without Meta services.

Or ideally a whole different OS.

Redex68 ,

Huh, didn’t know that, what are you using to stream? Cuz if I remember correctly the meta app forces you to login.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Why would I need a Meta account to stream from my PC?

Redex68 ,

Because the oculus PC app forces you to login before you can use it

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

You don’t need an Oculus PC app to stream from your PC. You just use Steam. Or any number of other options like Moonlight.

Redex68 ,

I wasn’t talking about streaming your screen I was talking about streaming VR games

I’m currently eyeing Signalis pretty hard.

Oh and by the way, if you like Sci-Fi and you like shooters, you MUST pick up Prey 2017!
For $3, it is an ABSOLUTE STEAL.

Vcio OP ,
@Vcio@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, Prey is pretty much a must have at this price. Signalis i would wait a bit more.

My first sale with a VR headset, so I’m having a great time. Already bought Half Life: Alyx and the 7th Guest VR.

@JoeKrogan@lemmy.world avatar

Nothing yet as I need to clear some backlog items first but I have stray, rdr2 , high on life and cyberpunk on my list for when the prices come down. That will be a while though. Deliver us moon and mars look cool too.

These days I like something I can finish without a million side quests. In the case of great games I can make an exception but its just a question of not enough time.

I wish I could have had a steam deck back in the day with my current games 😄.

Currently getting through black mesa and trying to finish off MGS5 with bouts of super mario wonder sprinkled in when I need a change of pace. Also have to finish breath of the wild…

Hope you all get some gems . Enjoy folks 😊

    I think Valve is right here but “I suffered so they should suffer, too” is simply not a good mindset to have

    Drigo ,

    Nah not even close, it’s so tedious and a pain in the ass to develop for apple. I understand why they don’t want to do it, and as they say, not s lot of people even play on a mac. So why even bother?

    Apparently. I think it ended after Halo CE was released for Mac. I’d say it was late 80s up through around 2000.

    Lmaydev ,

    If you know it felt bad why would you want others to feel that way?

    That’s just a bit shit of you tbh.

    TIN , in Steam Programmer's Sale 2023

    Anyone have any recommendations from this?

    amio ,

    Zachtronics games are usually pretty good. Depending on how comfortable you are with coding etc. some of them are more "overtly programming-y" than others, so could be a better or worse fit.

    TIS-100, Shenzhen IO, Exapunks all use (stylized) "assembly" languages.

    SpaceChem, Magnum Opus and similar games are more drag and drop.

    TIS-100 is meant to evoke sitting around hacking at weird, old hardware and has a whole story to it. It gets hard. I've spent less time on Shenzhen but it is basically the same gist - except now you're an electronics designer, and the language works somewhat differently. Exapunks is "hacking". Most games tend to feature the same kind of scoring allowing you to optimize your solution for speed/cost/space etc

    Also a lot of them seem like Factorio clones. It's not on sale (never is) but it's reasonably priced and a very decent game with cool devs.

    TIN ,

    Thanks, I keep looking at factorio and wondering if it would like to be on sale for me. It would be good to have some more games I’ve never downloaded in my Steam library.

    amio ,

    looking at factorio and wondering if it would like to be on sale for me

    Spoiler: it would not. Good game, though.

    slazer2au ,

    Factorio will never go on sale. Wube has said many times that puting the game on sale would be a slap in the face to those who crowdfunded the game before it launched.

    The best time to buy Factorio was during the crowdfunded campaign. The second best time is now.

    As a consession there is the free demo you can play to see if you like the game.

    Aren’t the servers no longer working?

    Ebennz ,

    Yes, but Activision claims they are still up. And since their server status page says it’s up they won’t do anything about it

    reddig33 , in Tomb Raider I-III Remastered

    Really tired of games being called “remastered” when it just looks like the original blocky-ass game running in an emulator.

    Liome ,
    @Liome@pawb.social avatar

    That’s pretty much what remaster is.
    It comes from music industry where remastering is just mixing audio channels with different settings.
    Besides, Lara’s boobs are round now, that’s probably the main thing they wanted to update, lol.

    Quazatron ,
    @Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

    I’m kind of partial to the pointy boobs myself, so I guess I’ll stick with the original.

    LongPigFlavor , in What is your opinion on games raising their price ?

    It’s bound to happen, but not every game needs to be bought at launch, the game will still be available for purchase at a later date.

    I saw that color of red and read the text and my mind immediately went to Limbo getting a Netflix adaptation.

    Great game though. I’d recommend getting it on a mobile device like a phone though because it makes for a decent time killer and the controls transfer nicely.
