The biggest companies on the planet suffer from cyber attacks.

stratoscaster ,

Then you find out the real reason they need faster latency is because they’re pinging the server for new data every 1ms

stratoscaster ,

It’s not real, it was a joke made by 4chan that stuck. Nobody is actually using that term unless they’re a pedophile

stratoscaster ,

Whatever makes you feel better about your racism man

stratoscaster ,

Who tf cares? Tired of seeing braindead takes that people double down on

stratoscaster ,

As long as you know what you’re doing lmao

(Or not if you don’t care)

The Batshit Crazy Story Of The Day Elon Musk Decided To Personally Rip Servers Out Of A Sacramento Data Center (www.techdirt.com)

Back on Christmas Eve of last year there were some reports that Elon Musk was in the process of shutting down Twitter’s Sacramento data center. In that article, a number of ex-Twitter employees wer…

stratoscaster ,

I mean it was more of a data loss and data security risk but okay

stratoscaster ,

As someone who works in software dev, QA is a godsend to developers. Thank you for your sacrifice lol

stratoscaster ,

You are correct. It would be heinously expensive to “remove” training data. Even training a very rudimentary model can take hours on a high-end tensor processor.

stratoscaster ,

Not sure how effective that would be. It would have to be paired with regulation on the cost of college tuition for it to actually do anything.

And even then, a “more affordable” college education still is unobtainable to many students. Most people have zero savings or even a negative net worth.

www.credit.com/blog/average-savings-by-age/

stratoscaster ,

Bro did you read my comment, I gave you your answer and said it should be regulated to be more reasonable

stratoscaster ,

… putting a cap on tuitions based on poverty line? Subsidizing tuitions for people relative to poverty line? There are many ways to accomplish this it’s not impossible to make tuitions reasonable for people who can afford them and attainable for people who can’t. We all benefit from people being more highly educated

stratoscaster ,

What? You do know that the poverty line is used as a base reference often right? Usually government assistance programs will qualify based on anyone below X% of the poverty line like 200% or something. You don’t have to be at or below the poverty line to qualify.

I really don’t know if you’re being serious, but the points you’re bringing up seem like nonsense. Obviously there are ways to manage these things, it just depends on how you want to go about it.

stratoscaster ,

Also you have to actually be independent to claim yourself as independent… have you actually gone through that process? You have to literally provide proof that your parents either A) could not help fund your education or B) are estranged or dead, and also have to sign an affidavit. Source: I had to do this myself in college

stratoscaster ,

I made the mistake of replying to a comment on hexbear that was erroneously claiming Ukraine started the war, dudes are absolutely deranged.

stratoscaster ,

Bro that woman is getting death threats I kinda doubt she’d be lying just to be vindictive

California judge charged with killing wife had 47 guns, 26,000 rounds of ammunition: Court documents (abcnews.go.com)

A California Superior Court judge arrested last week has now been charged with killing his wife in front of their adult son at their home. Court filings reveal the judge had over 47 weapons and 26,000 rounds of ammunition in his home.

stratoscaster ,

Yeah I mean to be fair there are tons of gun enthusiasts that also have an insane number of guns and ammo (because they regularly go shooting at a range or something for fun).

It goes to show how sometimes it’s not just because they’re enthusiasts though but because they’re actually nuts. Seeing as this guy was a judge I doubt there would be any way of stopping him from stockpiling that much weaponry.

stratoscaster ,

I’m learning this the hard way with Manjaro, but also learning a lot about Linux along the way. Pulseaudio was just completely fucked and I had to switch to pipewire to get it to stop crashing lol

stratoscaster ,

Yeah but also it enables stuff like Nazi dogwhistling soooo lmao

stratoscaster ,

“but why can’t I say offensive shit, it’s so funny every single time”

It’s not, edgy humor is stale especially the likes of 4chan

stratoscaster ,

Are your reading your own comments before posting?

stratoscaster ,

Yeah but Nazism spread via propaganda, which is what dogwhistling is a form of.

The Internet is the largest spreader of propaganda that humanity has ever seen, so it’s not surprising that it helped revitalize neo-nazism and fascism is general. It also served to make satire and actual radicalized behavior harder to detect. A lot of the time, 4chan boards use this “edgy satire” format to normalize the behavior (to an extent). See: the “MAP” misinformation campaign they did and how it reinforced actual pedophilia and demonized LGBT groups

Do people just not use the YouTube subscription feed?

I consistently hear people on YouTube complain that the subscribe button doesn’t do anything for viewers, now that channel notifications are controlled by the bell. But it does do something: it puts the videos from that channel in your subscription feed, which is readily accessible on all versions of YouTube. So why do people...

stratoscaster ,

Oh yeah there is. Open the left-hand navigation sidebar, and click on “trending” . The trending tab isn’t as bad as it used to be but it’s still bad.

stratoscaster ,

There’s only 5 different games and they don’t really do anything interesting with any of them. Hard pass

stratoscaster ,

This has been known for eons, hasn’t it?

stratoscaster ,

Since it’s a webserver running on this, would it be possible to deliver a JavaScript implementation of DOOM?

js-dos.com/DOOM/

stratoscaster ,

Linux is the coolest fucking OS, hands down… If you’re a computer nerd. Otherwise it’s inconvenient at the best of times. Many users click around in their OS of choice without fully understanding what they’re doing, myself included. Try this in Linux and you’re in for a really bad time.

stratoscaster ,

It also works with Shift so you can highlight and select words at a time.

stratoscaster ,

Definitely check the SMART status for uptime when you receive them. Make sure you can return it before you buy it as well

stratoscaster ,

Alternatively Scotch tape + sharpie and multiple layers if you don’t have masking tape (source: never thought to use masking tape instead of Scotch tape)

stratoscaster ,

It really depends on how much time people would have to migrate data and swap email accounts. If it’s years, we would probably be fine although the financial and data loss would be still be incalculable.

If we didn’t have much or any time to migrate… I don’t even want to think about it. If email accounts suddenly got shut down many people would lose banking access, among many other things. It would probably cause a global recession if I had to guess (talking out my ass on this one but I wouldn’t be surprised).

stratoscaster ,

Holy fucking shit that’s insane. What’s wild is, if I understand it correctly, that’s basically linear with how many users have joined, meaning people are posting more than ever before (on a per user basis).

stratoscaster ,

Part of it is the time saving of using a password manager. If it takes you like 30 seconds to fish your password out and type it in and you do that at least once a day, that’s really going to add up fast.

stratoscaster ,

You have to go into account settings and not app settings… Allegedly

stratoscaster ,

Right?! Like, posting a reply that’s a legitimate correction is fine, whatever. But people constantly post slight technicality corrections (that are usually 75% of the time incorrect or misleading) on reddit. It’s so annoying especially when you’ve been on reddit long enough that you can tell from a parent comment when people are gonna “well actually” and exactly what they’re gonna say because it’s all been said 200x before.

/rant lol

stratoscaster ,

Haven’t really seen nearly as much toxic content on Lemmy as of yet. Might actually start interacting instead of rolling my eyes at every other comment lmao
