As a non programmer this is just how all programming questions look like to me.

Leap year creator has left the chat & blocked…

technom ,

Leap years are not as bad as timezones, if you think about it. Timezones try to imperfectly solve a local problem - how to match your clock with the position of the sun. Leap years try to reasonably solve a global problem - how to keep your calendar aligned with the seasons.

I only have one monitor… It’s an ultra wide.

how does it feel to be wrong!!!

Did you iron out all your question marks?

Yes i like to keep tidy ty for noticing :>

I upvoted both of you :)

Two headsets ago I bought a G933 from Logitech, mainly because it had an AUX input on the USB-dongle which I thought was pretty neat, but that one had big unnecessary RBG strips on the sides of the earpiece. The most ridiculous usage of RGB I had seen till date. But I programmed an interface between CSGO and the RGB on the headset to indicate my health so the people watching from behind us at a lan could see it.

Anyway, I’ve always preferred white LED’s and RGB can rarely replicate pure white.

I love my inkjet. It’s so nice to be able to do my own high quality prints for the wall and for friends.

I just had to uproot and move several states away with my life in a luggage and a backpack <.< No fitting the monitors in there :(

Still got my glowy keebs though ;P

I just discovered that while the ServiceNow APIs return all times in UTC, they use the user’s default time for all times passed in as a parameter.

So if your account is set up in PDT and you say “give me this item that I just created”, it will say “here your item, this was created at 17:00”.

But if you say, “cool let me see all items created in the last hour, so anything greater than 16:00”, then it will respond “got nothing for ya, chief.”

RGB is overrated

fishbone ,

Useless RGB is overrated. I color coded my keyboard and it’s unbelievably helpful, especially for altered keys (ie: media keys/macro keys).

DST is a digital STD

SpaceNoodle , in Three monitors, and i feel insulted

No, I don’t have useless LEDs in my computer. My gaming rig is actually in a flat black case that blends in with the furniture.

Except my employer shipped me a dev box with a big polycarbonate window and an unnecessarily beefy GPU with RGB LEDs that dance by default. 🤦

mox ,

I wonder if anyone has studied the rate of cosmic ray-induced bit flips in a PC with a side window case vs. an all metal one.

SpaceNoodle ,

It’s an interesting question, but realistically inconsequential.

mox ,

Do you mean that you think bit flips are inconsequential, or that the rate of bit flips is inconsequential?

SpaceNoodle ,

The rate for your home PC is inconsequential, and the difference between a thin sheet of metal and lexan would have an inconsequential impact.

But flips are not inherently inconsequential. Coincidentally, a lot of my current work involves making sure we are not adversely affected by cosmic bit flips in safety-critical hardware.

mox ,

The rate for your home PC is inconsequential,

Please don’t make assumptions about my data integrity needs.

But thanks for clarifying what you meant.

SpaceNoodle ,

If you have real data integrity needs, you shouldn’t be relying on off-the-shelf home PC parts. There’s real hardware and software for such applications.

Your basement is safe enough from cosmic rays for your personal needs.

Sprawlie ,

Where’s your ECC?

wizardbeard ,

If it’s actually controllable, and not just hardwired on, openrgb is your friend.

SpaceNoodle ,

If I already don’t give a shit, why would I bother?

JohnEdwa ,

Because it seems like you disliked them and “off” is one of the controllable options?
But I guess you are at a so advanced level of not giving a shit that you don’t even care that they dance around.

SpaceNoodle ,

Not only is the box under my desk with the window facing the wall, you are correct, I wouldn’t give a shit if it weren’t. I was simply noting the irony of my “professional” equipment being the most frivolous.

That’s a gamer, not a software engineer

ZeroCool ,

I mean, I do have RGB lights but it’s not because I’m a software engineer. I’m just a dork.

Gork ,

I specifically built my computer to have as much RGB as possible. Also because I’m a dork.

kryptonianCodeMonkey ,

I am a software engineer and I also have a PC with RGB vomit. But not because I’m a software engineer. Because I’m also a dork, and the icy blue color keeps my cpu cold.

BassTurd ,

I switch to red when I’m gaming for the extra power.

BassTurd ,

It makes sense to target your colors for granular performance increases in different areas.

JohnEdwa ,
ZeroCool ,

Lol thank you for making that, I had that meme in mind while I was writing that reply.

spongebue ,

Yeah, as a software engineer I have 3 monitors if you include the one built into my laptop

SpaceNoodle ,

I have 4 if you count the TV in my lounge I can connect to via AirPlay.

EliasChao ,

What about my phone’s display, does that count as well?

jadero ,

Why not? The last decade before semi-retirement I had all the different ways to get in touch with me restricted to my phone. My work computer had no email client, no messengers, nothing. I even helped lead the charge to eliminate desk phones.

That little display may have been the single greatest priductivity booster ever. It stayed on a shelf across the room on do not disturb. The only people allowed past the DnD were my wife and my son. If there really was a work emergency, a manager or coworker knew where to find me to tap me on the shoulder.

BorgDrone ,

I’m a software engineer and while I do have 2 monitors I have absolutely no RGB anything. Just a nice clean setup. My main monitor is on a wall-mounted arm so it appears to just float above my desk. My MacBook is hidden behind the other monitor, which is in portrait and on an arm so it floats just above my desk. Wireless mouse and keyboard (magic mouse and magic keyboard with numeric, both in black/aluminium), no visible wires. One single thunderbolt cable to connect my MacBook to a dock that’s hidden below my desk, which hooks up to my monitors, ethernet, amplifier, etc.

Ok so there are 24 time zones. Before that every town had their own time based on the sun. We basically went from infinity time zones down to 24. This is in fact simpler.

(There are some half hour time zones too, (India, Newfoundland) so at least 26.)

zaphod ,

There are a few time zones that are 45 minutes off, like Nepal Standard Time which is UTC+5:45, some places in Western Australia and South Australia use UTC+08:45 and the Chatham Islands are at UTC+12:45 or UTC+13:45 in summer.

WalrusDragonOnABike ,

DST means you also have things like CST vs CET and given some places start DST earlier or later than others and some ignore it all together, we probably have at least 50 time zones.

Always fun trying to schedule international regular meetings when suddenly there’s a week when half the people’s times changed and the other half’s times haven’t yet, so you try to figure out which time would exclude the fewest essential people.

Gork ,

Absolute madness. smh my head

perviouslyiner ,

there are 24 time zones

Cunningham’s law says that this will generate some discussion in the replies!

uis ,

No, there is entire continuum of time zones.
