Trump Calls For Gun Confiscation In Fox News Rant: Cops Should ‘Stop And Frisk And Take Their Gun Away’

You’ve got to let the police do their jobs, number one. Number two, you have to do a policy of stop and frisk. When you see a guy coming down the street and you can — the police know every one of them. They know their middle name. They know where they live. They know every one of them, the local police, and they’re great.

You got to let them do their job, stop and frisk, and take their gun away. You’ve got to do it. If somebody has because they have all these guns — you know, it’s very interesting, the toughest gun law, the toughest, by far, in the whole United States is in Chicago, and yet it’s the most — it’s —

Let all your Republican 2Aer friends and family know.

fine_sandy_bottom ,

Did fox guy really refer to him as “Mr. President” ? Isn’t that a bit weird.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

They always do that. It’s a tacit admission of the Big Lie.

Armok_the_bunny ,

IIRC it’s technically proper to still use that title for former presidents, but very few actually do out of justified distaste for the man himself, along with the fact that it’s definitely not a good idea to say anything that might imply you think he’s still actually the president.

orbitz ,

Also isn’t it pretty uncommon for someone to lose reelection for president but be the nominee the next one? Mean most know their official politics days are over at that point so the title isn’t confusing.

Armok_the_bunny ,

It’s uncommon, but certainly not unheard of.

Rai ,

I have read it is technically true, but reliable news places won’t call them President because it’s also technically not current. In the US, apparently once someone is president, they forever have the president title.

That douche from the “ change my mind “ meme, I checked out one of his YouTube videos a while back and he called the US President Biden “former vice president Joe Biden” after he was already president. Which is so douchey, it’s kinda funny.

(He deleted all of the YouTube videos since then to force people to watch him on his grifter platform. I’m shocked. At least it’s only shitbags being grifted.)

ayyy ,

That’s the normal way to address a former president. They do the same with all the other former presidents as well, this isn’t the gotcha you think it is.

Edit to prevent spam: fuck Fox NewsLeglallyDefinedAsEntertainment

fine_sandy_bottom ,

I didn’t say it was a gotcha. I said it was a bit weird, which it is.

ayyy ,

No, addressing someone with the same convention that’s been used for literally hundreds of years is not weird.

Being obsessed with the genitals of urinating children is weird. Burning pieces of paper with a series of words you don’t like is weird. Denying basic science is weird. Bribing pornstars to hide your affairs during an election is weird. Don’t dilute the message.

fine_sandy_bottom ,

Snuff has been around for hundreds of years, but using it is still weird.

I’ve only ever seen former presidents referred to as “former president” in the third person and “mister” when addressed directly.

fox2263 ,

Nice ramble of a second paragraph there.

Snapz ,

First they came for the imaginary guns of imaginary black criminals, and I said nothing… Because I was also imagining their weapons and crimes and hiding in my little baby coward bunker of a home trying to buy bulletproof pants online that would make people think that maybe I might not have a tiny, weird penis…

mctoasterson ,

What are the prevailing sentiments about Bloombergs NY tenure, these days?

This whole “selectively frisking people” schtick was his invention.

ArbitraryValue ,

Well, serious crime did fall dramatically while he was mayor. People argue about whether or not stop-and-frisk was responsible and I don’t know the answer, but his overall policy on policing was clearly very successful. He was popular enough for the city to change the rules about term limits so that he could be mayor for one more term, and subsequent mayors have not been as popular.

HawlSera ,

I mean, I imagine crime rates tend to fall when you get Judge Death out here to declare that being alive is a crime, and if they’re already committing that crime best to lock them up before they do something more serious…

tal ,

The problem with this sort of thing is that I remember in the 2016 campaign how Trump would go on record saying Highly Objectionable Thing. You’d have the New York Times and such crow that now they’ve got him, print the statement. Trump wouldn’t miss a beat, would just go and say something in complete conflict with the other thing. He didn’t bother trying to reconcile the statements.

I don’t think that that statement’s going to do him any favors, but Trump has said a lot of things on the campaign trail that, if taken at face value, would probably kill his chances as a serious candidate. That didn’t happen in the past. I’m skeptical that it will now.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Oh it won’t drop his ratings like a rock or anything, but it hopefully will turn a few people off. And he keeps saying things that turn a few people off here and a few people off there…

HawlSera ,

Trump slid by on beginner’s luck.

He won simply by refusing to realize he lost and just continuing on as if nothing happened, previous presidents would have tried to walk back their controversial statements and get caught in a PR nightmare. Trump simply was too insane to realize he made a mistake, and the rest of us realized we were so used to “playing the game a certain way”, we had no idea how to deal with Trump.

When Romney was caught on tape talking about how “33% of Americans don’t matter” he knew he was fucked and desperately took pictures of himself looking confused and out of place at a McDonalds to show he’s “Down with the poors! Even eats the same gruel and wine or whatever these Non-5 Star Restaraunts serve…”, which… Didn’t help matters.

With Trump, you catch him bragging about sexual assault and instead of doing an awkward community outreach program where he tries to convince everyone “I’m totally down with the bitches and the hoes!”, further alienating voters in the process, which is what we expect a politician to do… He just goes on talking about how muslims need to wear special IDs and how Mexico is “sending rapists and druglords!”, and… instead of us ever getting to the part where he goes “Oh shit, I shouldn’t have done that.” and start waffling…

People just kinda get used to him being the “says crazy things guy”, it doesn’t matter what he’s saying, he says it with such confidence…

Which is why changing the approach from “Trump is a racist” to “Trump is just… fucking weird and I can’t be the only one who notices this?” works so well, as that gets people to actually stop and go “Oh yeah, that is weird isn’t it?”

It’s like back in 2016 Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush were race horses giving a good show, and a rampaging bull runs out of the track out of nowhere… And instead of going “Oh my God, there’s a rampaging bull on the race track! Evacuate the race track while we call animal control!”

They just start treating the bull like a valid race horse and criticize the Hillary Horse for running “Not so elegantly herself, to be fair to that rampaging bull.” Not because she is, but because they need to seem impartial.

And the audience just said “Okay, I wanna see what the bull’s gonna do.”, and since no one stops him from simply goring the jockeys of the actual equine with his horns, he wins and instead of the Judges (Electoral College) going “Clearly, somehow, somewhere, someone fucked up. We can’t give it to the rampaging bull”, they said “What could possibly go wrong?”

Anyway then Trump threw out Obama’s pandemic response plan, replaced it with nothing, and several tens of thousands died during Covid as a direct result. Because Trump isn’t an elegant race horse navigating the course, he’s a rampaging bull who keeps trying to kill the medical staff when they treat people’s wounds (in this metaphor… when he kept contradicting health experts, including the guy he put in charge of the CDC…), because we’re too used to a rampaging bull not being here to think anything is weird.

Freefall ,

They know he means “take guns from black people”. They support that.

Facebones ,

What I came to say. They know precisely what he means and they support it wholeheartedly.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

I’m sure that only applies to a) people of a different skin color first, then b) poor white people a distant second.

SnotFlickerman ,
@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Everybody calm down. There’s a reason that the 2Aers won’t get mad about this.

This is as racist of a dog whistle as you can get. Lots of people are aware “stop and frisk” really means “stop and frisk minorities and plant drugs and weapons when you can.”

So it’s perfectly in line with the “law and order” bullshit. Don’t expect a lot of anger about these comments. To the shitheads, these comments are directed at the “right” people. Cops wouldn’t stop and frisk them, they think, because cops know that they’re a law abiding citizen by the color of their skin.

Racists gonna fuckin racist, man. First gun control we ever got in the USA was because white people got freaked out by black people with guns.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You might be able to chip a few away by calling him a “gun grabber.” They probably won’t vote for Harris, but they won’t vote for Trump either. They might just sit it out.

Chip a few away here and a few away there… that might be all that’s needed.

Fascists don’t win on facts and logic, they win on affect.

He says one thing about guns, but means something about hurting minorities. His electorate only cares about the second part. Literally anything you could argue about the first part is worse than useless, because through sheer power of denial they’ll revert to affect on this well-practiced talking point (”Trump love guns, Trump hate [insert slur here], Trump just like me"). You can’t win on this battlefield, no matter how objectively and obviously right you are.

That’s why “Trump is weird” is so unbelievably more effective than “Trump is a rapist”, “Trump is a fascist”, “Trump is a criminal” or “Trump is a traitor”. Pointing out his weirdness directly undermines his affect. “We’re not going back” calls back to the constant feeling of dread of his presidency. Ironically when dealing with humans, but especially when dealing with fascists, affect and core values are more important and less malleable than facts.

HawlSera ,

I literally just learned the word affect like… 4 hours ago, what the fuck?

meeeeetch ,

Gun Grabber Don? You mean the only 21st century American president to sign an unconstitutional gun ban?

blazeknave ,

I think we all agree on the middle path. Keep posting bc every single voter counts. And share relevant expectations with the community who may not be 100% knowledgeable of the nuance.

frunch ,

They probably won’t vote for Harris, but they won’t vote for Trump either.

This is actually possible. There’s a “don’t tread on me” type that has been using their yard as a political billboard for years and i just recently noticed that while they’re still anti- our current Democrat governer, they took down their pro-Trump stuff as well. Now there’s some sign about Jill Stein that’s up but seems a lot less flamboyant.

The joke is that it’s the same damned thing when Eric Adams or Beto ORourke suggests it.

Take the guns from the poors is always the subtext. You never talk about disarming the police or curtailing access to private security.

Republicans just want to be vigilantes. And they’re mad at Democrats when they can’t hunt people in their neighborhood for sport.

fine_sandy_bottom ,

Yep - “the police know everyone of them”

jjjalljs ,

Conservatism is “there must be outgroups for the law to bind but not protect, and in groups for the law to protect but not bind” manifests again, here.

Zaktor ,

Same reason the NRA barely made a peep about Philando Castile. Licensed to carry a gun, dutifully announced that to the officer, and got killed for it. A year later they said that was a shame or something like that and then immediately forgot about it again. White agent of the state good, black gun owner bad. The conservative gun rights movement has always been motivated by racism.

HawlSera ,

Indeed. They see all black people as criminals, I’m sure they’re thinking “If we get him on a bullshit charge now, he can’t steal a bicycle to sell for more hoodjuice or whatever it is those rappers sing about.”

Disgraceful.

Newsflash: Dark Skin is not evidence of guilt, but try telling the cops that…

ThrowawayPermanente ,

“Take the guns first, due process later”

buddascrayon ,

Oh yeah it’s going to make him real popular with the second amendment people. LoL

I think it’ll be hilarious if Kamala Harris released a statement saying that unlike Trump she will never take your guns away. 🤣

m0darn ,

If they know these people are active criminals they will have no problem citing just cause for arrest and search.

I live in Canada, our gun rules are different than the USA. This week in my city some charges against a dangerous criminal were dropped because the police had a “flagrant disregard for charter rights” (according to the judge) (oir charter rights are similar to American civil rights)

They searched him improperly, and found a loaded, illegal gun. Charges dismissed. If they had handled it properly they could have made the charges stick. What a waste of everyone’s time. Police didn’t respect his rights because they don’t respect my rights.

Dorkyd68 ,

So he’s calling for en mass racial profiling for a gun round up essentially only in Chicago. Jfc. This man is deranged. Bruh this would never happen.

Furthermore, can this man not put a sentence together? Like at all?

Imagine him trying to order something at McDonald’s drive through. He’d be like " I’d like a big Mac, great burger, excelle… ya know, the great people of Texas, their cattle, best cattle and let me tell you… also an apple pie, have, have you ever had an apple from Nebraska? Best appl… Anyway so I’m talking to the mayor of Lincoln, Lincoln Nebraska and he says, he says Mr president that apple this apple it’s for our troops and the troops are, it’s like I tell my kids… and on and on he goes until the drive through employee commits suicide via dipping head in deep fryer
