Eric Meyer had said that computers, his cellphone, and the home’s internet router were taken during the raid. Herbel said her computer and phone were taken.

The router is the key to the case. That’s where you find the real crime. Idiots.

Nurse_Robot ,

While they are idiots, this was about cruelty. They knew what they were doing.

We’re talking about cops. They had no idea what that thing was when they unplugged it and threw it on the pile in their MRAP.

some_guy ,

Well put.

TheWorldRolledMe ,

The router may have log files pertinent to the investigation. It may be basic information unless it was setup otherwise but it’s more information that can help lead to a conviction (hah) and possibly a slap on the wrists followed by a stern finger wagging.

Pretty sure the router doesn’t have persistent memory, so unplugging it wipes anything useful.

Or for that matter, enough on board storage to store more than a few hours of logs at best. Logs generate obscene amounts of text per second.

SirSamuel ,

I can put over 100 HD movies on a drive smaller than my thumbnail, but i get what you’re saying.

I don’t really have a point, I’m just amazed that storage has advanced this far in my lifetime (80’s/90’s kid)

Manufacturers for most devices are going cheap out on everything they can, see: cell phone industry and 3.5mm jacks, microSD card slots, etc. More storage ups the cost by quite a bit more than the storage itself actually costs for a new phone (but don’t worry, the phone manufacturer offers cloud storage (as a paid service)!

Storage has improved amazingly over a short period of time, there’s individual drives with more than 20 terabytes these days

SirSamuel ,
  1. I totally agree with you
  2. Dude! I bought 16TB HDDs for my NAS for less than $300 each. What the hell!? I was paying just over $16 per terabyte!

I’m an old fart from the 1.44MB disc days. I thought burning DVDs was cool. This is just…

I have hundreds of movies and shows. I could watch 8hrs a day for a year and not rewatch anything in my collection. It’s amazing. Rejoice in it

The MicroSD card thing really chaps my ass… You’re already committing to a sim card slot, it’s no effort at all to allow for a dual slot that also accepts a MicroSD card.

God I wish LG stayed in the phone market, fuckin loved my V50; 3.5mm with a nice DAC built in, microSD, fingerprint reader on the back.

I still have it, but there’s no updates for it; I’ve thought about looking into something comparable to grapheneOS but didn’t find anything for LG phones newer than the v40

He left UPnP turned on? Throw the book at him!

…one count of interference with the judicial process.

That’s IT?!?

Transporter_Room_3 ,

Well yeah.

Just enough to convince the people that are convinced of his innocence that he’s being wrongfully punished, those who don’t bother looking into the punishment to say"yep he got punished", and it’s not like they have anything to worry about from the rest of the population who will only be upset over a light slap on the wrist but not do anything about it.

System working as intended.

unemployedclaquer ,

Wellllll… no. Optimistically. They certainly are trying to work out the statute of limitations on his various crimes versus what chargeable evidence blah blah blah

roguetrick , (edited )

Glad they’re charging him with the felony. I really really hope he cuts a deal and incriminates the county council members that hired him to be their bulldog in the first place.

He did not go after that council member without their explicit instruction, I promise you.

Meyer’s 98-year-old mother Joan Meyer, also a co-owner of the newspaper, lived with him and was home at the time of the raid. She collapsed and died the day after the raid, and Meyer blamed her death on the stress of the raid.

Maybe but at 98 she could have just died at any time

Xanis ,

You could too. I’d even bet had this happened to you that there would be a measurable increase in your risk of death.

ILikeBoobies ,

Yes but it’s easier to argue in a young person than an elderly

roguetrick , (edited )

Proximate cause (but if) and preponderance of evidence are what decides that in civil trials. Cody and the county are going to lose on both for her wrongful death suit.
