Alabama official calls for firing of transgender Space Camp employee after parent speaks out

Several Alabama politicians say they are concerned about children’s safety at Huntsville’s Space Camp after a parent complained about the presence of a transgender employee.

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville and Reps. Dale Strong and Robert Aderholt posted statements on X, formerly known as Twitter, after a parent posted on Facebook complaining about the gender identity of one of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center employees. The topic was also picked up by the Libs of TikTok account.

bradorsomething ,

I’m extremely concerned that this article implies we are allowing people from alabama to interact with science. Sure, they need access to basic science things like fire, and electricity (questionable if they should be allowed to use breakers), but what if an understanding of critical thought, and accidentally reading the bible unsupervised, causes unexpected outcomes.

afraid_of_zombies ,

Media refuses to identify what religion those people are.

Maybe later tonight I will go on Facebook and find out who complained. Give them a call at work tomorrow.

GiddyGap , (edited )

Tommy Tuberville:

Transgender: Bad

Incest: Good

Otakulad ,

I would like to compare the number of trans people who have had an illegal relationship with a child to a straight person.

Sweetpeaches69 ,

Better yet, members of the GOP

Blaster_M ,

Of course, it’s Alabama

IamSparticles ,

Well… Yeah. That’s where space camp is.

yesman ,

You’ve got a lot of Republicans in congress that pretend to be dumb. I think Tuberville is the genuine article.

If Trump wins, we’re going to have a new Lavender Scare.

aStonedSanta ,

Of course I learned all about the red scare in school. They left out the persecution of homosexuals. Wonder why…

RaoulDook ,

That’s textbook transphobia there, they are literally afraid of a trans person for no reason

Asafum ,

Every day I feel like I can’t possibly hate these people more and every day they show me I have a larger capacity for hate than I previously assumed.

They’re developing a facet about myself that I don’t enjoy developing.

Cethin ,

I got past hate a long time ago. Every time I see things like this now, I just think “of course” and it sucks. It’s more just disappointment in how the US got here at this point. How have we allowed money to be used to control people so easily? The amount of things people manage to not know about because it goes against their position is insane. There needs to be more control over basically anything that calls itself news that requires certain things out of them.

radicalautonomy ,

Now imagine the unending, visceral vitriol you’d be feeling if you also happened to be transgender, and you’ll come close to understanding how I feel 24/7.

andros_rex ,

I really wish people understood the psychological toll of this shit. It sucks to wake up, read the news, and be constantly reminded that a substantial amount of people hate people who are like me.

bradorsomething ,

Well I think you’re beautiful being who you truly are. So fuck those other people.

dangblingus ,

Firing an employee for being transgender would be such a slam dunk of a discrimination/wrongful termination lawsuit. Easy fucking money.

I_Has_A_Hat ,

LGBT+ are not actually a protected class in a lot of states. They kind of get covered by gender protections, but not completely, so I can definitely see this happening with no legal consequences.

dangblingus ,

Incorrect. The Supreme Court ruled that no employee in the United States can be fired on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity, enshrining LGBTQ protections as part of the Civil Rights Act. The ruling occurred in 2020.

NoSpiritAnimal ,
@NoSpiritAnimal@lemmy.world avatar

Section 508 of the Social Security Act makes it illegal in all 50 states.

SmilingSolaris ,

Fun fact, according to the supreme Court, the part of the civil rights act that protects from discrimination on grounds of your sex also protects gender identity and sexual orientation as both of these require taking the person’s sex into consideration to discriminate in the first place.

“I don’t hate these people, man,” Yarbrough said.

Oh, but you do, buddy. You do.

Potatos_are_not_friends , (edited )

Usual fucking rhetoric.

“They live their lives, I live mine.” All while going out of their way to fuck with them.

NOT_RICK ,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

He left out the “I would just prefer they don’t exist”

These douchebags would rather shove anyone marginally different than them into the closet rather than having to be mildly uncomfortable in public or having to have a difficult discussion with their children.

aleph , (edited )

There’s also the right-wing obsession with “grooming” and protecting kids from “sexualization”. It happened with gay people 50 years ago and now it’s trans peoples’ turn.

grue ,

Oh don’t worry, they’re working their way back to gays as quick as they can. And then interracial couples will be next on the list after that.

Gabu ,

All the while their actual “high ranking” members are known to be a bunch of pedophiles. Conservatism is a cancer.

Gruntyfish ,

Doesn’t hate them, just wants them to hide away and never encounter others. Perfectly reasonable /s

Wirrvogel ,

To be fair I am also concerned about children’s safety in Alabama, for a multitude of reasons and non has to to with transgender people.

agent_flounder ,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

And all of it has to do with Republicans

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Considering who their former chief justice and almost senator was, I’d definitely say they have bigger child safety problems.

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville and

Of course the traitor Tom Tube was going to be one of them.

I’m surprised that Katie “Craziest Bitch in the Target Parking Lot” Britt didn’t join this particular lynch mob, though. She must be trying to lie low until everyone forgets about her SOTU madness…

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I didn’t get to see that until Jon Stewart showed clips. I read about it before that and thought, “it can’t possibly be worse than Bobby Jindal a few years ago.” Oh my god was it worse. Why on Earth did they choose her?

Viking_Hippie ,

Have you seen Scarlett Johansson’s SNL cold open parody of it yet? It’s fucking perfect! “Craziest Bitch in the Target Parking Lot” is a direct quote from it 😁

And yeah, I’ve long since given up looking for logical reasons for the choices of GOP voters… 😮‍💨

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I can’t watch it right now, but I definitely want to check it out later. Thanks!

Viking_Hippie ,

You’re very welcome! I’ve seen her do comedy before so I already knew she’s great at it even though it’s not her main thing, but without overselling it, this is probably the funniest I’ve ever seen her and the resemblance is eerie too! 11/10 if you ask me 😁❤️

I_Has_A_Hat ,

Scarlett’s eyes seem too normal. For a better resemblance, she needs to have that look in her eyes that says “I just killed and skinned the family dog out of jealousy and left the body somewhere you’ll find it”

Viking_Hippie ,

Sometimes you gotta take a little artistic license to make sure the parody is funnier than the original 🤷

Go too far on the “unhinged” track and you risk it veering from comedy to horror. Like the GOP itself.

girlfreddy ,

Last week’s SNL is one of the best episodes I’ve seen in a while. Andrew Yang and Ariana Grande’s skit was priceless, and the amount of cast mates who broke character by laughing was awesome!

@b3an@lemmy.world avatar

I hadn’t seen this yet and omggg I was cracking up!! She did that spot on! I also love the Biden quip about MTG dressing up for the SOTU 😂🤣

some_guy ,

Someone on a podcast suggested that the repub response is a sacrifice to get rid of the ones they don’t want. She seems to have done that for herself. Cited Marco Rubio and someone else as examples; I don’t know how those speeches went, but they suggested they went badly.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I can see why. It’s very important to teach young would-be astronauts that there are only two genders for some reason.

NOT_RICK ,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

When the alternative is having to actually talk to your children about the world they will always choose shielding their children from reality.

TransplantedSconie ,

I’ve not heard of this guy. Is he someone in the Republican party?

Esqplorer ,

He was an election officer or something for the GOP in the country. Not a high level person, but don’t let that distract from the countless other GOP paedos like Denny Hastert.

Burn_The_Right ,

I have been searching high and low for any conservative who is a good “person”, but I cannot find even one. Not one. I think it’s possible that every conservative alive today is pure evil.

minibyte ,

I was going to add “or wealthy” but the two usually run hand in hand, so you’re probably right.

JudahBenHur ,

I have a friend who is a generallty normal, kind person who voted for trump. He’s not evil or rich, he’s just a bit dumb and he has a brother who’s convinced him to vote R. Again, he’s not a bad guy, just stupid.

dudinax ,

Such stupid people are gradually turned evil as they eat more and more of Trump’s shit without gagging.

pezhore ,
@pezhore@lemmy.ml avatar

That’s the thing. You may start out not evil, but once you start going down the Fox News --> News Max --> OAN --> Frogs are turning gay pipeline, you become a person who sure seems to have some fucking evil thoughts and beliefs.

gmtom ,

There was that one republican senator that recently made a speech calling out how he was forbidden from helping to pass the border security act because its an election year and would make Biden look good, I have some respect for him.

Burn_The_Right ,

Yes, occasionally we may find a kernel of sweet corn lodged in the surface of a complete piece of shit. Occasionally.

Bytemeister ,

Respect for someone driving the country in a horrible direction, and using their vote to continue allowing Texas let asylum-seeking children drown in a river lined with razor wire because they “weren’t allowed” to vote differently, and they are consciously aware of their cowardice and dereliction of duty?

That’s not someone I would respect.

gmtom ,

Madame President, I’m going to vote “yes” to be able to move on to this bill. So we need a change in law. I understand we have differences, but we’ve got to sit down together, figure out how we’re going to solve problems, because the American people sent us here to do that.

This is the pen that I was handed at that desk when I was sworn in to the United States Senate. And I signed a book that was at that desk with this pen because I was becoming a United States Senator. Because the people at home sent me here to get stuff done and to solve problems. There’s no reason for me to have this pen if we’re just going to do press conferences. I can do press conferences from anywhere. But we can only make law from this room. And to do that, you need one of these pens. And there’s 100 of them in this room, and 60 of us have to agree to solve a problem.

And I’m determined to sit down with anyone who wants to solve the problem, regardless of what side of the aisle that they’re on to figure out how we solve these things. Because Americans are ticked off that this is not resolved, and they expect us to get things done. So why don’t we do that?

When shitty people do good things we should still respect that good thing, it doesnt mean you have to respect everything they do or have done and to do otherwise would be doing almost the exact same thing the republicans are doing, blindly shutting down anything “the other side” does just because they are the “enemy”.

Bytemeister ,

I agree about respecting and even calling attention to good work.

I’m saying that people who torpedo a bipartisan, popular solution (or at least a meaningful step towards it) who then say “I know voting against it was wrong, but what was I supposed to do, vote for it, even though I know that was the right thing to do”, aren’t good people.

I’m not shutting down people for being the “otherside” or the “enemy”. I’m shutting people down for disingenuous and cowardly ass kissing of a spray tan orange Hitler wannabe. Those aren’t qualities that we want in politics, those aren’t qualities we need in America, and those aren’t qualities anyone in the world should respect.
