burntbutterbiscuits , in Hot air balloon pilot with cocaine in his system made a mistake that caused fatal crash, NTSB finds

We’d have to have more information. If a drug is “in your system” that’s not quite the same as being high on the drug.

Cocaine stays in your system like three days I believe. He could have done cocaine three days before no longer been high.

Marijuana stays in your system up to 90 days. He could have smoked a joint 3 months before the incident and still had marijuana “in his system”.

This is a tragic incident, I’m just pointing this out. I don’t know what state of mind the pilot was in but there is a big difference between having a drug in your system and being high on said drug.

We need to stop the war on drugs. Drugs are not bad.

Beetschnapps , in Insight: Conservative think tank emerges as force behind DeSantis campaign

It’s weird how the GOP went from singing “bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran.” a la The Beach Boys, to plainly saying “No matter what, I side with Putin”…. All in what like an 8 year time span?

KevonLooney ,

The answer is money. It’s hard to invest in Iran but easier in Russia. Both are right wing governments, but Russia is more open to outside money.

I bet people at the Heritage Foundation have bought Russian bonds on the cheap or have business contacts there. It’s that simple.

Changetheview ,

Without a doubt, money is the answer. I think for many policy makers, it’s as simple as taking in campaign contributions (money or more creative help. See 2016 Trump campaign DNC hacking for a well-known example). A simple little $10k investment is probably enough to payoff most of these schmucks, but Russian oligarchs are willing to drop big dough because the return is worth it.

And for others, it’s access to Russian projects AND access to Russian capital.

These fucking sellouts would rather hop in bed with the enemy than lose out on a potentially lucrative deal. And these are often people with so much wealth already, they will quite literally never be able to spend it. Greedy, selfish assholes that are addicted to watching their personal charts and numbers rise - even as their country and geopolitical stability crumbles due to their actions. They’re mentally ill and have zero regard for the life of others.

GreenMario ,

They see Russia as the perfect model to be. 2 classes: the elite and the peasants that know their place. Heavy Christian control. Illegal to be gay or trans. The elite can do whatever they want whenever they want and the peasantry has to suck it up. No one’s investigating them. No court is gonna hold them accountable. All you gotta do is kiss the ring of the Top Guy so he doesnt have you thrown out a window or make special Tea.

If I was a rich Republican I too would want to be like a Russian Oligarch.

Buelldozer ,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

“No matter what, I side with Putin”….

To echo the words of our current President “C’mon man…”. If what you said was true then the overwhelming majority of Republican politicians wouldn’t keep voting to send Ukraine more weapons and more money.

$2 to cut a sandwich in half

What a bunch of Gorlami.

protist , in Insight: Conservative think tank emerges as force behind DeSantis campaign

The Heritage Foundation’s Wikipedia page reads like they’re responsible for all the absolute worst political decisions of the last 50 years. Here’s just one example:

The Heritage Foundation supported the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. According to a 2004 study in the journal International Security, the Heritage Foundation confused public debate by challenging widespread opposition to the Iraq War by international relations scholars and experts by contradicting them “with experts of apparently equal authority…this undermined the possibility that any criticisms [of the war] might be seen as authoritative or have much persuasive effect.” The organization defended the Bush administration’s Guantanamo Bay practices.

ChicoSuave ,

It’s funded by billionaires like the Kochs, Mercers, and Waltons to make America a theocratic oligarchy. The Heritage foundation is one of the original quiet, evil “think tank” that generates conservative talking points. Ever wonder why conservatives all share the same talking points? It’s coordinated by the Heritage Foundation.

treefrog ,

Yup. These are propaganda masters bent on cementing oligarch power. And they don’t care who they hurt in the process.

GreenMario ,

Heritage is always code word for white supremacy too when you think about it. Confederate “heritage not hate” bullshit too.

Well yeah. They’re Republicans.

Artaca , in Blue light blocking glasses may not actually help with eye strain or sleep quality, researchers find

The most recent time I went to get glasses, I asked about blue light frames and the guy stopped me and said something along the lines of, “Don’t bother, they’re actually bs unless you get the ones with super yellow lenses - those are legit. Or use computer programs to make your screen orange, that can also help. Folks just wanted to find a way to charge more for glasses, and it’s been twisted so you actually sound more informed for getting blue light coatings. You’ll notice that I didn’t mention blue light or even pitch it to you - you brought it up on your own.”

Thought that was kind of fascinating and kinda cool of the salesman to talk me out of spending more money.

You poke fun but this is where the real evil happens. This is the powerful elite coming together to manipulate the fuck out of reality, because, yes, they’re that rich.

gumchops , in American Airlines sues Skiplagged, claiming cheap tickets are ‘classic bait and switch’

Doesn’t more weight mean more fuel is required! If anything, the airline is saving some money by not having to pay for the fuel that would have been used. I mean if it was booked for the whole flight at the beginning of course.

Lichtblitz ,

While this is true, the airline could have sold the direct flight that you actually took for more money. You had to pay less because the flight was seemingly inconvenient for you. So in the end you didn’t pay for your illegally obtained convenience. You rascal!

gumchops ,

Yes but that was their choice. They didn’t have to sell it that way. They don’t get to tell me how to use the ticket I bought. How about they stop inconvenienceing people in the first place. I believe our tax money has helped keep these jerks around whenever the price of fuel or the economy shake from a bad dream. And what do we get? Called out for just trying to get by while theyrape us with fees and stuff our legs into our chest so they can cram more bodies into these tin cans so we can sit on the tarmac for hours till finally they cancel the whole flight. Nah, they can suck this one up.

Buelldozer ,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

To be clear it’s not illegal for the passenger to do this. Airlines just hate it because it breaks their business model in a way that lets someone else make money.

Lichtblitz ,

I was hoping the silly “you rascal” made the sarcasm obvious.

originalucifer , in Affidavits reveal what evidence police used to raid Kansas newspaper

if you look into statistics of how many warrants are actually denied, you might be shocked. i wont, cuz ive seen it... but its <1% in some places.

the judges, and actually more acutely important in this process, the DA are a part of the corruption.

DAs are elected, and so, their motive already suspect. . they also have to work daily with the police department, and so, have incentive to be 'on their side'. the judges half the time are asleep doing whateverthefuck the DA is feeding them, and of course, no cop is every wrong for good-ol-white-boy reasons (this is not a southern phenomena) .

so imagine your typical small town with all this mild corruption and zero accountability on 'issued warrants'. welcome to the u-s-of-a

@originalucifer @MicroWave

I've never quite understood why almost the whole American justice system is elected. I mean it's just asking to be abused when appointees are beholden to the money and power that got them elected in the first place.

Wirrvogel , in Shop owner shot, killed over rainbow flag outside clothing store near Lake Arrowhead

I find it important to make clear it was a hate crime, but Lauri Carleton was NOT killed “over a rainbow flag outside her clothing store”.

No one gets killed because of a rainbow flag. You get killed because an asshole who wants to rather die than adapt to the world changing wants to spread fear with his last action and needs desperately to find a “reason”. Let’s not pretend he had a reason any other than being a coward.

My heart goes out to her family, friends and the community impacted.

Staccato ,

That headline is doing the murderer’s work by literally propagating his anti-LGBT terrorism. Shame on that periodical.

aidan ,

Why has calling murderers cowards become such a thing? I blame someone who acts out of fear less than someone who acts out of hate or greed. Fear is a normal emotion and often reasonable. I don’t think this person acted out of fear though.
