SocialMediaRefugee , in Family died in Rockies after trying to live ‘off the grid,’ official says

I’d say they increased their distress, they were naive too. Living off the land is a major commitment and requires skill and knowledge. People in the past still used trade and tribes to survive that way. Even back then they didn’t try to live in something as flimsy as a tent. Also, going 100% solo was a death sentence. Reminds me of Chris McCandless (“Into the Wild”).

SevenDigitCode ,

Reminds me of the Netflix series Alone. Only one out of ~12 people make it to 100 days, and they’re all experienced survivalists

Strider3200 ,

Sounds like this wasn’t thought through and was perhaps an emotional decision. True off-grid living takes lots of knowledge and prep. Surviving 100 days is basically conservation of resources to last till the e d. Off grid still requires shelter and resources.

For once though, their motives seem more noble/less crazy than most of the headlines. Heck, a bunch of us are here on Lemmy cause we got fed up with a system and want something better. At least they wanted something better.

FReddit ,

I thought about going off grid in a house with a well, solar, and storage batteries. The price looked good.

Even with the house it was too marginal. One anomalous weather event would have been RIP.

SocialMediaRefugee ,

I knew a guy who went to Montana to try the “cabin off the grid” life. He said we was drinking before noon after a few weeks and was in danger of becoming an alcoholic out of boredom so he moved back.

FReddit ,

I could see that. I think the off the grid thing has been glorified by people who haven’t actually done it.

I mean, Id like to run off into the hills sometimes, but I’d probably run right back due to some combination of boredom, weather, starvation, and running out of alcohol.

mrginger ,
@mrginger@lemmy.world avatar

Can confirm, live in Montana. Cabins are great…during the summer months. Winter rolls around and you better be prepared to be cut off from everything for a few months. Plus it’s cold as fuck. Last year where I live, we consistently saw -20F and stayed below 0F for weeks at a time. Winter here sucks, but it keeps out the riff raff for the most part ;)

Agent641 ,

Sounds tough. I dont even know how to find and catch wild ramens.

DNAmaster10 ,

wazoobonkerbrain ,

Italy duh

WarmSoda ,

That’s easy. Set up camp and just hike over to Italy.

FReddit ,

The tent was what got me. A fatal choice. Tragic, but avoidable.

Stabbitha ,

Another article I read stated that the incomplete beginnings of a lean-to or similar shelter were present at the camp, seems like they tried to build something more permanent but ran out of energy to finish it. Which is why you build your shelter first.

paddirn , in Family died in Rockies after trying to live ‘off the grid,’ official says

Technically, they’re still off the grid.

The amount of people who just wander into California’s parks without water or supplies of any kind whenever I go out shocks me

Sure it’s the mountains, but it’s still 98 fucking degrees out, what are you doing

Toneswirly , in Family died in Rockies after trying to live ‘off the grid,’ official says

I feel for the kid, who got dragged down by the hubris of his mom. It’s troubling that we’ve grown so disconnected from the world we’ve built; we dont feel like we benefit from it at all. We can all sit here and shame this mother for being neglectful and stupid, and yet the feelings she had of a chaotic life with no upside…that’s so fucking common right now.

JGrffn ,

Its a commonly floated idea among my circles, and by me personally, that we kinda just want to fuck off and build a comfy commune somewhere not too hot, not too cold, just away from cities, and try to be as self-sufficient as possible. Just a small group of friends and family. It’s kinda what I’m saving up for, if I’m honest, because buying a city house is just… Prohibitively expensive for what it is.

gerbler ,

Probably easier to survive in a commune of a few dozen than it would be in tents with 3 people. But yeah I think a lot of us have had dreams of fucking off to the wilds to live like a hermit.

I would probably last like 3 days and only if I’m being extremely optimistic.

rckclmbr ,

I mean, we kind of did this with lemmy right? Same thing with people escaping British rule to come to USA?

emeralddawn45 ,

The problem is that ‘we’ didn’t build this world. Our society was (is) shaped by people who’s situation and life experience have very little in common with the average person, and yet we continue to let them shape policy to their own benefit and our detriment because… money? Or something? Idk.

ChaoticEntropy , in Mastercard demands US cannabis shops stop accepting debit cards
@ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk avatar

If you think about it, do you really want a history of federal crimes recorded on your bank account…?

NuPNuA ,

You’d make sure to register your company financially in a way that doesn’t specify the business right?

ChaoticEntropy , (edited )
@ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk avatar

Is obfuscating what your officially registered business fundamentally really possible? Not going to pass muster legally.

NuPNuA ,

Don’t lots of adult goods companies already do this to avoid it saying “big dildos.com” or the like on people’s statements?

ChaoticEntropy ,
@ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk avatar

Right, but that’s for your personal privacy, not your legal protection. If a weed company calls itself Cheshire Garden Supplies instead of Weed Weedersons Weed Emporium then that doesn’t stop the fact that you bought stuff from a weed dispensary from being a federal crime if push comes to shove. All I’m saying is that cash seems the naturally more sensible option either way.

marmo7ade ,

Yes. Context matters. I’m not scared of the words “federal crime” like you clearly are. I care which crimes were committed.

If I found out a business was harmed for selling cannabis I would be MORE LIKELY to support them. Not less.

ChaoticEntropy ,
@ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk avatar

I don’t live in the US… but if at a certain time the federal government decides to go backwards and wants to charge cannabis purchasers with federal crimes then you’re ready to be served up on a platter by your bank.

The context here is payment method, not your willingness to support legal cannabis dispensers.

RagingRobot ,

That would be a pretty big list of people at this point. I don’t think it would even be possible to charge all of them. It’s just unrealistic especially since it’s legal in the state. Possible but unlikely.

ChaoticEntropy ,
@ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk avatar

You say that, but historically cannabis related charges in particular have been used to target specific parts of the population and individuals. It’s the sort of thing that could be exploited nefariously at a convenient moment. Perhaps I’m reading too much in to it.

SCB ,

It could be used to target-prosecute political enemies and “unpopular elements” like police/climate protestors.

Really we just need federal legalization.

afraid_of_zombies ,

I disagree. The federal government has shown every willingness to go after all of us. Imagine a 1000 dollar fine for every pot transaction. You can fight it if you want but that would risk criminal charges. So you take the plea deal.

blockhouse ,

Agree. Which is why if the federal government decides to put a clamp down on cannabis use, they’re not going to prosecute thousands of users. Prosecuting three or four card payment processing companies and the banks they do business with would have an icy cold chilling effect and bring the industry’s cash flows to a dead stop.

SCB ,

What if dozens/hundreds of individuals were prosecuted for possession of a controlled substance because the DEA a) subpoenas the suppliers to get a list of transactions and B) subpoenas the credit card processors to get info on customers?

Because that’s the fear

This is extremely unlikely under the current admin, but we may very well have a far more hostile admin in just under 18 months

afraid_of_zombies , in SEC now requires companies to disclose cyberattacks in 4 days

If they cared the new rule would be that the company breached has to compensate their customers for the breach. Make it a million dollars or so.

tym ,

You’ve never worked in cyber security, I see.

It’s a cat and mouse game. Playing defense is tough.

afraid_of_zombies ,

And you haven’t worked in pollution reduction, I see.

Just because it is tough, doesn’t mean you get a pass. These companies decided to collect all this data, they are responsible for keeping it secure. Just like companies that do any kinda chemical processing are responsible for what they unleash.

What would be ideal would be more political leaders seeing their data compromised. Maybe then we will start seeing fines for companies that think IT security doesn’t matter.

tym ,

Do you have Nation state teams drilling your barrels for the lulz daily?

Agreed in principle, but your idea to financially cripple a company over a random breach tied to a vendors firmware fuckup makes 0 sense.

The shit that would fill that void is ten times worse.

PenguinJuice , in Deaths due to extreme heat at national parks increasing, data from the National Parks Service shows

MostlyBirds ,
@MostlyBirds@lemmy.world avatar

Or maybe just don’t go to national parks when conditions are this dangerous. Literally none of them have anything worth dying to see.

Yondu_the_Ravager ,

And Yellowstone doesn’t even get that hot! Well, unless you tried to jump into one of the thermal features. Then it’s extremely hot.

givesomefucks ,

Acknowledging the weather would be start, they don’t even need to acknowledge climate change. Just realize that when it’s over 98 degrees and you plan on a full day of hiking in the wilderness…

Bring a bunch of water and take plenty of breaks in the shade.

Yondu_the_Ravager ,

Just make informed choices. Want to visit Death Valley! That’s great! It’s a beautiful park worth seeing. But don’t go in the middle of summer, go in fall or winter when the daytime peak temperatures will be much more comfortable.

If you MUST go in the summer, plan ahead. Bring several gallons of water with you per person, plenty of sunscreen, ideally a hat and sunglasses, and lightweight, breathable clothing that won’t trap your sweat and body heat. And on top of that, make sure your car is up to date with maintenance and can comfortably drive when the temperature outside is 110+. To have all bases covered, it would also be worth investing in a satellite phone- not all national parks have cellular coverage. In my experience, cell service is extremely spotty to non-existent inside of national parks.

QuinceDaPence ,

To have all bases covered, it would also be worth investing in a satellite phone-

Dosn't even have to be that fancy. You can do with a SPOT locator or Garmin InReach. They usually give you at the bare minimum three buttons:

  1. Location update to pre-configured contact
  2. Pre-configured message (+location) to pre-configured contact (such as for non-life-threatening issues)
  3. S.O.S, Send in the Cavalry, I'm fucking dying - which will send your location to search and rescue.
guyrocket ,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

I think education is important. I think they should force everyone to watch a 10 minute movie about how people die in parks. Make is very graphic to drive the point home. Like those drivers education movies.

krayj , in Feedback needed for new rules

These rules imply, but do not acrually require, that posts must provide a link to an authoratitive source. It is possible to interpret those new rules such that sources are optional and that the only time some of those requirements come into play is if a source was optionally included.

I think there should be an explicit requirement that all posts include a link to a source…followed by all those other requiremeents.

afraid_of_zombies , in US citizens will need to pay for a visa to travel to Europe starting in 2024

Great so one more thing to remember. Get a connecting flight in Europe now means a visa.

bobs_monkey OP ,

I’m not sure that’s how that works. I think if you just have a layover and you remain in the secure area of the airport, you’re not technically passing through a point of entry and only required a visa for your final destination.

afraid_of_zombies ,

That is only marginally better. I have had near whole day layovers in Europe. The only thing that didn’t drive me insane was that I could walk outdoors.

Looks like it was probably from hypothermia or malnourishment or a bit of both. They could have died the same night, very sad.

mister_flibble ,

The fact that a hiker found one and the other two weren’t found until the next day makes me think that one left to try and get help, froze to death, and the other 2 died waiting.
