Omegamanthethird , in Donald Trump is on the verge of another $1 billion Truth Social windfall
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

Does current value take into account the amount of people will to buy at a certain price? Like, if people are buying at $49 per share, the value should be $49. But what if that’s only for 10,000 shares? Those shares are worth 500,000. But then if the next people are only willing to buy for $20 per share, that’s the new value.

But if they’re looking at how much 1,000,000 shares are worth, are they looking at current buying price or how much people are willing to pay for 1,000,000 shares?

Yewb ,

In a functional stock market price is dictated by supply and demand… we no longer have that.

treefrog , in Scientists push new paradigm of animal consciousness, saying even insects may be sentient

Any being that needs a map of the environment is going to have consciousness. Depending on its sense organs it will experience consciousness much differently than other beings.

So yeah that’s a pretty low bar. We’re going to find it everywhere. I suspect even mycelium is a rudimentary consciousness/nervous system. And plants are a lot more active underground than they are above, roots will move around rocks, be aware of if their neighbors are their siblings or not and share nutrients with their siblings by giving them more space, be more competitive with plants that they’re not related to.

Life’s a trip, and we are just some clever apes who have a lot to learn I think.

?
Pretty normal to drink in the theater when they sell alcohol.
Maybe you should go sit in the corner and reread the article.

ringwraithfish ,

I like to imagine op thinks the guy is sneaking in alcohol and buying an empty cup from the theater. The Texas man is pissed because he doesn’t know what to do with the remaining 2 oz after he planned on their cup holding 24oz.

breetai ,

How weird since they sold it to him. Where do you think they want him to drink it?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

If it’s like most movie theaters, I assume they wanted him to spill it on the floor.

PappyWappy ,

Lol what?

hydrashok ,

My theater has a full bar and allows you to drink whilst watching a movie. Pretty normal these days around here.

littlebluespark , (edited ) in The drug war devastated Black and other minority communities. Is marijuana legalization helping?
@littlebluespark@lemmy.world avatar

Thank fuck they didn’t use “decimate” like a dumbass. 🤘🏽

edit: The whingy downvotes here only underline the issue of confident illiteracy, vernacular morphology be damned. Just because some lazy fuck barely remembered the feel/sound/look of “devastate” and settled for the wrong word, doesn’t mean you have jump off the bridge too, kiddo. Read a damn book.

grue ,

To “decimate” means “to destroy 10%.” I agree with you that “decimate” would be inaccurate, I’m the sense that the destruction wrought by the drug war easily exceeded 10%.

littlebluespark ,
@littlebluespark@lemmy.world avatar

I’m well aware of what the term means and its historical usage. I’m also glad to see you know at least half that, and thank you for your support. 🤓

mPony ,

people have been using “decimate” to mean “to remove 90% and leave only 10% remaining.” When I was younger I was surprised to learn it didn’t mean that.

We already have a different word to indicate “to remove 10%” : tithe.

Maggoty ,

That might be your tithe, other places, groups, and organizations have different levels of tithe. Decimate has been to destroy 10 percent since the Romans used the word and killed every tenth man in a legion as punishment. This is not a new thing.

CptEnder , in Netflix: Profits soar after password sharing crackdown

Their sign up for password sharing is extremely aggressive too. Once you login to your TV it forces you to see the plan information without any option to say no or skip, regardless if you’ve shared your account before. You then have to select the other non default option to opt out. IF you accidentally hit ok after frustratingly trying to leave the prompt you get auto billed for the new fee zero confirmation of CC or purchase information. You then immediately have to enter the cell number of who you want to share with without letting you leave or go back. They want that person’s info regardless if you plan to share or not.
