GreenMario , in Fauci defends masking as COVID cases rise: ‘I would hope’ people abide by recommendations

Fauci would probably get a better response if he said “Don’t wear masks so the lib cameras can track you”.

All of a sudden masks sell out everywhere.

Seriously use reverse psychology.

dingus ,

Yeah, they really marketed masks wrong in the beginning. Hell, think of how much more traction Trump could’ve had by marketing masks this way. AND he could have sold a shitton of branded MAGA masks.

HeartyBeast ,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

The old ‘give the public the best available information in the best way you can’ ploy. It’ll never catch on.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Someone else mentioned this today and I’ve thought it for ages. Trump missed a huge opportunity to sell MAGA masks by going on the anti-mask train.

SpaceCowboy ,
@SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca avatar

All the MAGAs would be wearing their MAGA masks, probably harassing people that weren’t wearing masks.

But Trump was simply too vain to put on a mask himself, so the MAGAs emulated that and searched the internet for conspiracy theories they could believe in to avoid thinking of themselves as being vain.

ChrisLicht ,

Trump’s concern was that his face makeup would stain edges of the mask.

Boddhisatva ,

Be glad of that. If the MAGA folks had been wearing masks on Jan-6, they’d have been a lot harder for the DOJ to identify and arrest.

21Cabbage ,

I’m leaning towards having the CDC recommend these people don’t jump off a bridge so we can just get rid of this nonsense.

luckyhunter ,

That would actually be a more effective use of cheap masks too.

basskitten ,

Homer: “Reverse Psychology? Oh that sounds too complicated.”
Homer’s Brain: “Fine. DON’T use reverse psychology.”
Homer: “OK I WILL!!”

GiddyGap ,

Or simply just say “no need to wear masks” and conservatives will suddenly be all for masking up.

ForgetReddit , in Spanish Women’s Squad Refuses to Play Until Soccer Chief Resigns

It sucks that this is overshadowing their win. Spain should be celebrating their championship, not dealing with this dude. Just step down.

SuddenDownpour ,

Imagine marking the goal that seals the championship, and even right before your mind fully assimilates the celebration you have ahead, some idiot with authority over you comes and ruins it without absolutely nobody asking for it.

JoBo ,

I dunno. It does suck in the short-term, of course. But this problem has been festering for a long time, in Spain and elsewhere. The inevitable victory for the women over the boneheads will be a fantastic legacy. And no one is ever going to forget who won it in 2023.

Gork ,

Or even just getting them to squabble over which Christian denomination the school will follow. Baptist? Mormons? A specific protestant denomination? Or maybe even the gasp Catholics who are swayed by the Pope! Get them to internecine fight over their flavor of God to follow and it’ll break apart in no time.

Hellsadvocate ,

It won’t be killed. We’ve already seen them allow bibles in schools while denying every book conservatists don’t want. It’s a double standard that’s not being enforced in the federal court level. And if you think the supreme court will block that then good luck.

BertramDitore ,
@BertramDitore@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, this is what’s so frustrating. The Supreme Court has been pretty clear that it will only rule in favor of religious freedom for Christians. Access to abortion is critical for Jews and Muslims for example, but that doesn’t stop them from subjecting all of us to the extreme Christian belief on the matter. They’ve even gone as far as to say that the beliefs of reform or moderate Jews don’t count as Jewish beliefs because only the orthodox count (someone smarter than me can find the SCOTUS opinion that says this, it’s real). So yeah, religious freedom for Christians, no one else.

lone_faerie ,

That’s literally why people think being trans is something new. Nearly all the research in the world on the topic was lost in the Nazi book burnings

Susceptible to intrusive ads and viruses.

Power is pretty corrupting and anyone who is a famous person (as in, public enough to maintain fame as opposed to just broad recognition) probably has a bit of an ego.

I mean your average normal person would be like “Don’t idolise me, I’m just someone who writes books you like. Now please leave me alone” not posting on tumblr to adoring young fans.

solsangraal ,

i don’t like to assume everyone famous or powerful is a rapey asshole. but the more time goes by, the less shocked i am when i hear about it

Crashumbc ,

Your normal person would start out as “don’t idolize me” but that much attention is in itself corrupting over time.

dojan ,
@dojan@lemmy.world avatar

Given how prominent an ally the U.S. is, the rise of the alt-right and increasingly fascistic tendencies lends a legitimacy to that viewpoint I’d rather not see. I naturally don’t put sole blame on the U.S. for the western sphere leaning more and more fascist, but it’s certainly set a precedent making it easier for others to follow.

superminerJG ,

Zaktor , in Donald Trump may drop JD Vance for Nikki Haley, ex-Clinton adviser says

Well, if an ex-Clinton advisor says it, it must be true. Oh the statement is “may”, so there’s really no story here because you can never be wrong with a “may”.

taiyang ,

But, it’s Newsweek! There’s no more reputable source than that!

protist ,

Paul Begala is as “Democratic insider” as you can get, and is also an insufferable talking head. The point of getting a message like this out there is to undermine public perception of the Trump/Vance ticket more than anything

In response to Newsweek’s request for comment on Begala’s prediction, Trump/Vance campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said that “there’s a reason Paul Beluga [sic] no longer gets paid for his political advice.”

Lol

While Haley might have a broader appeal to undecided voters than Vance, her status as the last Republican to mount a primary challenge against Trump, when the former president often referred to her as “birdbrain,” may make the scenario unlikely.

Lmao

Zaktor ,

I understand what he gets out of it, I don’t understand why someone at Newsweek decided to be his megaphone. There are plenty of functional stories about Vance’s bad positions, hypocrisy, or poor favorability that do the same thing based on information rather than being a stenographer for someone without any real importance or special knowledge. If that’s the story they wanted to write, they very easily could do it, instead they just summarized an already worthless interview.

These insider ghouls just can’t die.

protist ,

How dare you question the journalistic integrity of…Newsweek?

Newsweek has been vapid and awful for a long time my man. A better question to ask would be why did OP choose to link Newsweek here

Other polls I had seen just yesterday (likely collected before Biden dropping out was a reality) still had Trump with a 1% or more lead over Harris, so they’re really all over the place and I wouldn’t trust them for much, even up to and including election day. I’m not breathing a sigh of relief until victory is declared, and even then, I wouldn’t be so sure.

tlou3please , in Jack Black axes tour over bandmate's Trump comment

I don’t think the comment was appropriate but I also don’t think it was really necessary to cancel the tour over it. It was a joke made in poor taste. Worth an apology? Sure. But this seems like an overreaction.

Kalkaline ,
@Kalkaline@leminal.space avatar

It’s worth a super sarcastic apology.

Lizardking13 ,

It’s noteworthy that it doesn’t appear black canceled the tour just out of nowhere. I think they were getting pressure from the government based on what I’ve read.

psmgx ,

From which government? The Aussies?

Lizardking13 ,

Yes. Apparently a single senator from the above users comment.

xenoclast ,

And the person who owns all the media in both those countries

fine_sandy_bottom ,

Nah that was just one senator from a rogue far right party that likes to get attention by making ridiculous statements.

They do not represent the government and are not in a position to apply pressure.

Lizardking13 ,

Not like I understand Australian politics but one senator could be an influence.

fine_sandy_bottom ,

“could be” is doing some heavy lifting there.

Yes one senator can be an influence in very specific and unusual circumstances. Not in this case.

Lizardking13 ,

How could you know this so definitively?

fine_sandy_bottom ,

I guess it’s just the australian political landscape, which I don’t expect you to care about very much, suffice to say this guy is pretty far removed from the people who can actually make decisions or exert influence about who can be in Australia.

He’s a senator. No one in the senate has any formal interactions which the executive branch like immigration personnel.

He was part of a party called United Australia Party which was a far right protest party. I say was because he was the only candidate that got any traction and his party was disbanded.

He only got elected because he received a bunch of “preferences” from another party that didn’t quite get enough votes to win the seat.

All of this means that formally his only job is to make comments about proposed laws. He does vote on laws but he’s not part of a bloq so no one cares about his vote. Informally it means he doesn’t have any capital - he’s a barely tolerated pariah. Next election he will be lost to the passage of time.

His only play is to make headlines by making outlandish assertions, like “JB should be deported”, to increase his brand recognition when he inevitably retires from politics to pursue a lucrative career in financial planning or some such.

Lizardking13 ,

Interesting. I had no idea, thanks for the in depth explanation. So in this case it probably played no or very little role. Things are just often more murky than we make them seem when commenting online is more the general idea I was trying to convey.

vxx ,

The fact they cancelled the tour and that he split with his manager, makes me believe it wasn’t that harmonic anymore and it was the final straw.

If not, I agree it was a massive overreaction.

Inciting violence is not appropriate, but he could’ve easily just said he should’ve kept it to himself and move on.

Maybe he feels he can’t be a showman and be all fun when democracy is at stake.
