SeaJ , in Most US voters say plastics industry should be held responsible for recycling claims – report

Don’t worry, the industry wants looser rules on what can be considered recyclable. They want to be able to label things as recyclable even if the majority of people do not have access to a recycling facility that can recycle it. Fuck them. Honestly, we should force them to be the ones to recycle the plastic if they want to label it as recyclable.

PugJesus , in A remote tribe is reeling from widespread illness and cancer. What role did the US government play?

In it, a BIA employee recalled clearing foliage in the irrigation canals at least 20 years earlier, when he sprayed at least one of the herbicides — but possibly both — that make up Agent Orange. The EPA banned one of those chemicals in 1979 because of its cancer risks.

US in 1970: “Woah, Agent Orange is actually too gruesome to be used even in this incredibly shitty war in Vietnam we’re waging.”

US in 1979: “Oh, okay, I guess we should ban it domestically too, huh?”

Fucking disgusting.

Cort ,

So, agent Orange is a 50/50 mixture of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T.

2,4,5-T is banned because of the carcinogenic dioxins.

2,4-D is still used to this day, even in Europe where their regulations are stricter.

I think it’s incredibly disingenuous for the author to describe it as “half of agent Orange” when this half isn’t why it was banned, and it’s still in use today.

Best line:

“George [Lucas] wanted, pardon the expression, a darker voice, so he hires a guy born in Mississippi, raised in Michigan, who stutters. That’s the voice, that’s me. I lucked out. From all these so-called handicaps, I lucked out to get a job that paid me $7,000, and I thought that was good money.”

Good voice, good man. RIP sir.

deegeese , in Unlocked, loaded guns more common among parents who give kids firearm lessons

Parent who think their kids know gun safety, no longer bother to keep their kids safe from guns.

SeaJ OP ,

The percentage of parents who think education is a proper replacement for proper storage is too high.

Dude, it’s ridiculous how much of an angel my kid is, but they continually make bonehead decisions, and it’s a safe bet they’ll continue to for years to come.

SeaJ OP ,

It’s like fire safety. Of course you teach a kid about fire safety but leaving a bunch of matches and gas cans lying around is going to increase the likelihood that someone gets burned. Education should be used in conjunction with proper storage, not in place of it.

nokturne213 ,

One of my son’s friend’s family literally has guns lying around the house. On a table, leaning on the wall, on a shelf. He stopped being allowed to hang out with that friend.

jonne ,

Isn’t safe storage part of gun safety?

dogslayeggs , in One of this year's biggest abortion votes is at risk

The ruling is that constitutional amendments, as defined by their state constitution, must define which laws are being requested to change or delete. So that means citizens can’t ADD rights to the constitution, only remove rights or remove a prohibition to a right. I would be surprised if any other ballot initiative had been ruled invalid for this reason in the past, since it seems so intentionally arbitrary.

That said, It feels like it would be easy to find the laws that need to be red-lined to make this valid.

PenisDuckCuck9001 , (edited )

They didn’t do this when Missouri legalized marijuana. Maybe they secretly know it won’t hold up and are just hoping no one with lots of money takes them to court. All they have to do is stall until it misses the deadline.

Title really needs to include that all participants own firearms. Makes a pretty big difference.

WhatYouNeed , in Most US voters say plastics industry should be held responsible for recycling claims – report

Use to make machines for the plastic industry. None of them wanted tp use recycled plastic, because raw plastic pellets were cheaper and recycled plastic was harsher on the machines.

zik ,

Recycled plastic is also inferior quality with worse structural properties so it’s not really suitable for many applications.

spyd3r ,
@spyd3r@sh.itjust.works avatar

Recycled plastic is also terrible if you have any type of quality standards you have to meet. You generally end up creating even more scrap because the regrind always has some amount of contamination in it, and never performs the same as virgin.

WhatYouNeed ,

Yep. When we made recycled units, the bearings got shredded and the drive motors got burnt out faster.

Linkerbaan OP , in US not probing killing of its citizen Aysenur Eygi in West Bank: Officials
@Linkerbaan@lemmy.world avatar

Some more context from the article

Israeli forces have killed several US citizens in recent years, but the Biden administration has consistently rejected calls for independent investigations into those incidents as well.

For example, in 2022, Washington resisted demands for a US-led probe into the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh by the Israeli military in the West Bank, urging Israel to conduct its own probe instead.

Israeli authorities eventually dismissed the fatal shooting as an “accident” and refused to pursue criminal charges in the case.

“Israel does not do investigations; they do cover-ups,” Cindy Corrie, Rachel Corrie’s mother, told Democracy Now on Monday. An Israeli soldier crushed Rachel Corrie to death with a bulldozer in Rafah in 2003. Her family spent years lobbying multiple administrations to launch an independent, US-led probe — to no avail.
